Covid-19 or it is officially known as the Novel Coronavirus test is a series of viral and/or antibody tests that will determine the presence of the Novel Coronavirus in the body. A viral test will determine if you have a current infection, meanwhile, an antibody test will indicate whether you had a past infection. Antigen Swab Test is one of the prominent types of swab test that provides a high percentage of Covid-19 detection or the presence of SARS-Cov-2 in the human nasopharyngeal swab specimens.
According to the outlines by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the categories below are those encouraged to undergo a Covid-19 test.
In addition, those who have plans to travel to certain countries that require them to undergo Covid-19 testing as part of their permit-to-entry requirements should also take consideration into subjecting themselves to the test either via Rapid Diagnostic Test or Swab Test.
Antigen Swab Test and Polymerase Chain Reaction Rapid Test differ in determining the qualitative element of the SARS-CoV-2 antigen in the human system. Antigen Swab Test is able to identify those qualitative elements present in the human nasopharyngeal swab specimen, meanwhile the same cannot be detected by PCR test. However, RT-PCR or PCR is able to detect different levels of viral nucleic acid that cannot be cultured which would lead to a theory that the presence of such nucleic acid in the human body does not always indicate signs of contagiousness.
In comparison between Antigen Swat Test with the Rapid Diagnostic Test or RT, the latter shows an indication if the person has been exposed to an infection, meanwhile, Antigen presents a detection in the present, which tells whether the person is currently infected with a pathogen such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
According to the CDC in their Interim Guidance for Antigen Testing for SARS-CoV-2 article, “Antigen tests can be used for screening testing in high-risk congregate settings in which repeat testing could quickly identify persons with a SARS-CoV-2 infection to inform infection prevention, and control measures, thus preventing transmission.”
