Dubbed a university town, Dumaguete has long been a tourist magnet, especially for expats looking for a place to retire in the Philippines. Though many travelers here use Dumaguete as a base before moving on to other destinations, Dumaguete has many interesting attractions to be discovered.
The best time to visit Dumaguete would be in November, specifically around the 3rd or 4th week. During this period, the city of Dumaguete celebrates a fiesta in honour of their patron saint, Sta. Catalina de Alexandria. The festival is highly anticipated by many is celebrated with grandeur, complete with parades, shows and carnivals. The city might become slightly packed during this period so do book your hotels ahead of time.
Laguindingan Airport (CGY) – Located 46 kilometers away from Cagayan de Oro, the Laguindingan Airport is the main airport that serves the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, and the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon in Northern Mindanao. The airport opened in June 2013 replacing both Lumbia Airport and Maria Cristina Airport. Laguindingan airport is the sixth busiest airport in the Philippines. There are various ways to get to and from Cagayan de Oro city from Laguindingan Airport. The cheapest and most common way to get to the airport is by van. The van offers travelers comfort, convenience, safety and a quick route of only around 45 minutes to the airport. The fare to and from the airport is only PHP199 per person, per trip. The second option to getting to and from the airport if via metered taxi. A trip from Cagayan de Oro to the airport will cost around PHP 400 to PHP 450. There are also Jeepneys and busses to the airport but are not as recommended due to the unpredictable timing and also the hassle of having to catch a connecting shuttle to get to the airport.
Sibulan Airport (DGT) – The Sibulan Airport, or also known as Dumaguete Airport or Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport, serves the city of Dumaguete, in the Negros Oriental Province. The airport is located a mere 3 kilometres from the Dumaguete city centre and can be easily accessed. Most hotels in Dumaguete would offer its guests airport transfers. However, if you are in Dumaguete without any transport arrangements, you can take a jeepney or a taxi to the city. Travelers will be able to find the rates for each kind of transport upon leaving the arrival hall.
Located approximately 400 kilometers northwest from Cagayan de Oro, both Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro share the same tropical climate with significant rainfall during most months and a short dry season. The average temperature of Dumaguete is slightly higher, at 27.8 degrees Celsius compared to Cagayan de Oro’s average temperature of only 26.7 degrees Celsius. April is the dry month for both Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro.
