Fukuoka is Kyushu's largest and one of Japan's ten most populated cities. • Engaku-ji Temple - The temple was built in 1246 at Yaguramon by Hojo Tokiyori to mark the arrival of Buddhist monk Lanxi Daolong from Song China. However, all of the temple buildings were burnt down during the war-torn period. In 1636, its base was moved to the grounds of Shofukuji Temple and was rebuilt, becoming a monastery for the temple. The wisdom of the Nampo-roku, a book of secret teachings of the tea master Sen no Rikyu, was passed down at Engaku-ji. Engaku-ji is known for its Nampo style of tea.
• Kaigenji - home to impactful statues of the bodhisattvas Enma-Daio and Kannon. It was opened in 1396 by Gyozan Shonin of the Dairensha Buddhist Society. This temple is said to have been moved to its current location from nearby Chiyomachi in Hakata-ku after Kuroda Nagamasa, the first lord of the old Fukuoka Domain, started reigning in the area. • Shikanoshima Island - famous around the country for the kin-in or gold seal excavated on the island. The seal, a National Treasure of Japan, is said to have been given by an emperor of China of the time and is an evidence of the area's history as an important base of exchange with mainland Asia. The attractions of the island include the Kin-in Park and a monument of a manyo poem.
