The airport is named after Djalaluddin Tantu, a colonel of the Indonesian Air Force from Gorontalo, who died during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation in Malaysia when his C-130 Hercules was shot down. On May 1st, 2016, this airport features a new terminal replacing the old terminal building due to increasing passengers as the years go by.
It has two aerobridges and became as one of first class Airport in Eastern Indonesia besides Sam Ratulangi International Airport and Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport. The new terminal is also completed with a huge parking area that accommodates more than 1,000 cars.
