Still relatively under the radar, the capital of Surigao del Sur’s beautiful coastal views is a peek into what the rest of the province and the Caraga Region (comprised of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands) have to offer.
Much has been said about Caraga and Mindanao in general but don’t let the news intimidate you. Tandag appeals to visitors who want to go off the beaten track, and is a nice jump off point to your southern adventures.
To get to Tandag, fly in from Manila or Cebu to Butuan City, Surigao City, or Davao City. From there you can hop on a van or public bus to get to Tandag. Travel time is three hours (Butuan – Tandag), 4 hours (Surigao – Tandag), or 7 hours (Davao – Tandag).
Inter-island ferries ply the Manila-Butuan or Cebu-Butuan route on a regular basis. Hop on a van or a jeep from the port to Butuan proper, where there are buses that can take you to Tandag.
If you’re coming from other parts of Mindanao, you can ride a bus to Tandag from Butuan, Surigao, Davao, or Bislig City.
Surigao del Sur has an excellent road network; enjoy the exhilarating coastal scenery on board a motorcycle. Tricycles and pedicabs are also available. Watch out for skylabs, motorcycles outfitted with extra seats and baskets so it can accommodate more passengers.
Situated on top of a hill, the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes offers 360-degree views of Tandag. Look out and see the charming fishing community below. A walkway makes the climb convenient.
The stalactite formations within the caves of Bat Island and Linungao Island will keep explorers amazed for hours. Legend has it that since Tandag was once a port of call to a Spanish galleon, locals believe there’s a sunken galleon in the seas near these islands.
Tandag Boulevard, also known as Vicente L. Pimentel Boulevard (named after Surigao del Sur’s first governor) is where you can relax and breathe in the ocean air.
Somewhere between Tandag and Cortes is Lubcon Falls, one of the area’s pleasant surprises.
Say a prayer at the San Nicholas de Tolentino Cathedral then have a glimpse of everyday life in the area at Tandag Town Plaza.
Learn to skimboard, swim, enjoy a picnic, and soak up the sun at Mabua Beach, where families congregate during weekends.
Stroll along the famous Tandag Boulevard at night, which is best enjoyed with street food and barbecue sold along the way. Pair it with puso (rice wrapped in coconut leaves).
Coinciding with the Month of the Ocean celebrations, Tandag City’s Eco-Sports Festival is also something to look forward to. After a coastal clean-up, sports and outdoor enthusiasts can compete in the following events: Urban Adventure Race, Beach Volleyball, Skim Boarding, Frisbee, Sand Art, Dance, and Kite Flying.
Café La Jara is considered as Tandag’s answer to Starbucks; enjoy a cup of coffee while reading a good book or watching people go by.
GoldBar Restaurant faces the Pacific Ocean; visit them for mouth-watering kare-kare, bulalo, and halo-halo, as well fantastic views of the sea.
Clej Bar and Restaurant serves festive, belly-busting boodle meals, which start at P299 (good for two). Lechon manok fans can get their fix from Jakah’s Mega Café and Oriental Lechon Manok. Meanwhile, swing by Mandarin Tea Garden for a Chinese-themed food trip.
For something sweet, Liam’s Café and Confectionery offers customized cakes, cupcakes, and pastries. Scoops Desserts and Snacks has banana splits, sundaes, blended coffee drinks, halo-halo, and other quick bites.
