Comfortable bed with clean sheets but difficult to sleep as no air con and packs of local dogs bark most of the night and all the local roosters crow from c 2am! This is not the owner's fault. He was very helpful in organising reasonably priced trips, transferred me to and from the airport ( 10 mins away) and made me omelette every day for breakfast to go with the cheese, salami, scones and cake.Very basic accommodation in someone's home.I felt very safe as a single traveller.Be aware that the information on Hotels.com website is incorrect. The WiFi connection is very hit and miss and you have to go prepared to pay in cash as the card reader also only works intermittently. Location is good. Next door to a cafe and minimally. Only 5- 10 mins walk from the centre of town and 15 mins from several small beaches

I had a hard time finding the Hostal as there were no signs. Finally someone pointed it out to me (where I must go) - I'd already spent 1 1/2 hours looking for it. I went there and there was not a single person there. I knocked on many doors and called out. I even peeked in a few unlocked rooms - almost all were under renovation. There were three dogs (one with a very vicious attitude - frightened me a bit, but the dog backed down when I said "NO") and a small kitten. There was also a kitten calling out from inside a locked room. That was the only life around. I waited about 30 minutes. Finally someone pulled in the driveway. I think she was trying to deliver something there. She said that was not the Hostal Ariki - I should look in town. But the photo on Expedia matched what I was looking at, as did the position on the map. I was definitely at the right place. She did not think this place was open. So I left and found a different hotel. This was very inconvenient, as I only had 2 days to sight see and this had now taken up about 3 hours of one of those days (finding this property and then needing to find a new hotel).

Upon arrival the owner, Martin, stated the credit card reader wouldn't work. So we had to pay in cash up front. He did some outrageous conversion rate which would have had us paid more than $160 EXTRA dollars that what our reservation was for if we were to pay in Pesos. We pooled all of our US dollars together and came up with the amount. The room was very disappointing. The beds stunk of mildew and the bathroom of sewage. Shower head was broken off and the curtain was moldy. There were constantly people lingering outside our room talking and laughing at all hours. They didn’t appear to be guests. The hotel is not correctly mapped on hotels.com. It is in an entirely different area. Lastly, Check out time on the door read 11:00am. The cleaning lady came by at around 10:15 and asked us when we were leaving. About 15 minutes later, Martin came by and asked us when we were leaving. We told him we were almost ready as it wasn’t even 11am yet. He said more guests were coming and he needed our room. As we were leaving he told us that the plane got there early. He claimed he had called the airport and they told him (WHAT??), so his new guests would be there early. The plane did not arrive early and in fact, the plane that was coming to get us was the first and only plane getting in that day and would arrive around 12:45pm, not two hours early as he claimed. He made the entire story up, lied to us and pressured us to leave quickly. Terrible.
