I made a mistake in an earlier review that was meant for Hotel de la Cuesta and not Casa Makiki. My stays at Makiki all were good and I was sad to see the hotel close in Alejuela. My earlier review is about my stay at La Cuesta where I was charged additionally because I had a service animal (unlawful), and then I was not provided proper bedding and had to use my clothing from my suitcase to stay warm at night. Hotel de La Cuesta, despite the very friendly staff was a very uncomfortable stay after they charged me extra to clean a blanket because of my short-haired service dog, and also provided thread-bare sheets and no blanket afterward despite wanting to charge me to clean the blanket due to my ESA. My dog and I have stayed in multiple countries and in upscale hotels and not once has there every been a complaint about his shedding, or a response to "take away" bedding.

This was about as barebones as it could be, even more so than I was led to believe on Expedia. We arrived later than expected and San Jose is dangerous at night, which is a major problem considering the addresses Expedia provides are inconsistent and inaccurate. If we didn't have a competent Uber driver, we wouldn't have found the place; beyond that, the reception was almost closed for the night, which would've left us stranded in the streets. Luckily, we got a bed. Which is about all there is to this place. There isn't even really breakfast, just bread and cereal (if everyone else hasn't eaten it first). I don't ever plan to go back, unless this place can be turned around to reach its potential.

After a 14 hour bus trip, we arrived in San Jose to stay for 2 days prior to returning to our home in Jaco Costa Rica and at 8pm, when check in is at 3, the room was dirty and bed was unmaid and smelled like sex. We had to wait for another room by the man that was working who was very rude also. He failed to show us where the bathroom was located or give us keys. The new room had a broken fan, dead bugs on the bed and dirty sheets. In the middle of the night, the slats on the bed broke and I fell to the floor and hurt my back We decided to stay because I had an appointment with the US Embassy at 11 am the next and my 8 year old was tired. The next day we were offered a better room with private bathroom so we packed our bags then were told nope that room was not available but were moved to another room. The new room was smaller, no fan, no tv and again no keys were given to us. There was no hot water in either shower and one bathroom was out of order. I was offered a discount and refund and have yet to receive either and spent the entire day in bed with a hurt back. There are 3 of us but we were offered only 2 plates of lunch. The staff is rude and the owner is rude also. I do not like to complain and would not if he would have addressed the issues but instead he has done absolutely nothig to rectify the issue he honestly only insulted my intelligence and made the situation worse by moving us to a different room that was worse than the first 2. I am requesting a full refund!!

Excellent location and price for those on a budget. When I made the booking it said the place was a hotel and in fact it was a hostel...if I had known it was a hostel I would not have booked. However, the place is in an excellent location, a lot of restaurants, museums etc. Perfect for the budget traveller or student.

The room was dirty, had bugs. I almost had to leave most of my clothes there due to the insects getting to them. The toilet did not work most of the time. I thought I was getting a room with a private bathroom and when I got there that was not the case. The bathrooms were very dirty. The staff was cool and helpful, just about everyone spoke good English. The walls were thin so it was a problem when I tried to pack and some woman with a baby knocked on my door and complained that she could not get any sleep because she could hear me walking back and forth and the sound of the T.V. Booking said that it was free breakfast however on the second day they gave us bread and jam and told us to make our own breakfast. Most of the dishes and silverware were not properly cleaned.

Most of the hotels or hostels in San Jose clearly describe whether you're getting a bad in a dorm room or a room. This is not the case with La Cuesta. I was looking for a last minute room for 3 people, and thought this was a private room with no bathroom ensuite, which we were fine with. Once we got there, we were told we were only getting enough beds for the 3 of us in a dorm room. If I had known this, I'd have probably looked for another option. This is what I booked. Notice that I didn't ask for two double beds, it was the option that I was offered when I searched for a room for 3 adults, and it doesn't say anywhere that these are just beds or a dorm room, which was clearly marked in other lodging options. We booked the hotel as a couple but had to stay in bunk beds. The lobby smelled cigarettes. Towels looked like rags. We had to sleep dressed. Breakfast was a joke. Camomile tea and piece of bread? I would rate it as 2/5 if I booked it alone as a hostel. As a hotel, it's 0.5 out of 5. Stay away unless you absolutely have no choice.
