Never leave London on the weekend without booking a hotel on your return. This is what we experienced when trying to find a hotel on a sunny Saturday afternoon by the beautiful River Mersey in Liverpool: trouble! All the one-star and three-star hotels have been fully occupied, leaving only five-star hotels with skyrocketing prices and able to reach the surface of the moon. The search then turned to Manchester in the hope that there would be vacancies left. It turned out to be in vain, Manchester was also fully booked. Our intention to stop by for a while there was dashed. The route was changed again, now to the homeland of heavy metal: Birmingham! Yes, there is an empty room! This Holiday Inn Express Lichfield: The price is very affordable for Indonesians like us, has a large car park, and what's even more enjoyable is you got a breakfast too! Yeay! The location is not really in the city of Birmingham, a bit to the outskirts and about 30 minutes drive there. After midnight checking in we were greeted warmly by the clerk at the reception. The check-in process took less than 5 minutes and we already got the key to our room which is located on the second floor. This time there was an elevator so that even our large suitcases were unloaded from the trunk of the car without any difficulty. There were two beds for the four of us, one of which was a sofa bed that had been folded into a bed. The size of the room is not too big, but again, it doesn't matter. The bathroom is only equipped with a WC and shower, there is no bath tub like in our previous hotels. It doesn't matter, we're too tired to even criticize it. Waking up we went straight to the breakfast table and found a fairly complete menu (full English breakfast!) And five-star standards for the size of a transit hotel. The taste of the food is also very delicious. The staffs were friendly and warmly greeted our two children. Next to the hotel there is a Costa coffee shop as well as an M&S food outlet. Very helpful for those who are hungry in the middle of the night. We assume they are open 24 hours, remember, this is an assumption. Even though we only spent one night here, we were very satisfied. Good sleep, good breakfast! What else do you need?

Think of classic Sunday roasts, featuring succulent roasted meats like beef, lamb, or chicken, served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. Traditional pies, such as steak and ale or shepherd's pie, are also staples, offering comforting and flavourful meals. For those with a sweet tooth, sticky toffee pudding or apple crumble are delightful ways to end a meal. These dishes are best enjoyed in the city's traditional pubs and restaurants, where recipes have been perfected over generations.

When it comes to dining locations, Lichfield city centre is a hub for a variety of eateries, from cozy pubs to more contemporary restaurants. Areas around the Cathedral Close offer charming spots with historical ambiance. For those seeking Halal options, it is advisable to check with individual restaurants in advance, as dedicated Halal establishments may be limited. However, many restaurants are accommodating and can prepare dishes without pork or alcohol upon request. Exploring local markets can also provide opportunities to sample regional produce and artisanal foods, offering a more casual yet equally delicious dining experience.

The price range for dining in Lichfield offers good value for international travellers. A hearty meal at a traditional pub might cost around ₱ 800-₱ 1,200 (approximately $15-$22 USD), which is quite reasonable compared to major European cities. Mid-range restaurants could range from ₱ 1,500-₱ 2,500 (approximately $27-$45 USD) per person for a two-course meal. Upscale dining experiences will naturally be higher, but still offer competitive pricing for the quality of food and service. For Indian travellers, these prices often represent excellent value, allowing for enjoyable dining without significant budget strain.

Practical dining tips for Lichfield include understanding local meal times; lunch is typically served between 12 PM and 2 PM, and dinner from 6 PM to 9 PM. Tipping is customary but not mandatory; a service charge of 10-15% is appreciated for good service in restaurants, though it may already be included in the bill. It's polite to wait to be seated in most restaurants and pubs. When ordering, don't hesitate to ask for recommendations or clarifications on dishes. Embracing the local pub culture is a must, as it's a cornerstone of social life and offers a genuine taste of English hospitality.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Lichfield

Navigating the cultural landscape and ensuring personal safety are key aspects of any international trip, and Lichfield, while generally safe and welcoming, has its own set of local customs and considerations. Understanding these nuances will help Filipino travellers feel more at ease and respectful of the local environment, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable experience throughout their stay in this charming part of the United Kingdom. Being aware of these points can significantly enhance your interactions and overall comfort.

Cultural etiquette in Lichfield, as in much of the UK, emphasizes politeness and consideration for others. Queuing is a deeply ingrained practice; always wait your turn in lines for shops, public transport, or attractions. Direct eye contact during conversations is generally appreciated, and a simple "please" and "thank you" go a long way. While casual dress is common, more formal attire might be expected for certain dining establishments or events. Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas and on public transport, to avoid disturbing others.

When visiting places like Aston Wood Golf Club, or any similar establishment, it's important to be aware of specific etiquette. Dress codes can vary; golf clubs often have rules regarding attire on the course and in the clubhouse, so it's wise to check in advance. Photography may be restricted in certain areas, particularly private clubs or historical buildings, so always look for signage or ask permission. Respecting the rules and maintaining a considerate demeanor will ensure a positive experience and reflect well on your respect for local customs and facilities.

Lichfield is considered a very safe city, with low crime rates. However, as with any travel, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. Reliable transport options include local buses and taxis; ride-hailing apps like Uber are generally available. For navigation, using offline maps on your smartphone is highly recommended. The local police are approachable and helpful, and emergency services can be reached by dialing 999 or 112.

For Filipino travellers, it's important to know that the Philippine Embassy in London is the primary diplomatic mission for the United Kingdom. In case of emergencies or for consular assistance, contacting the embassy is crucial. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) can also provide support and information for Filipinos abroad. It is always advisable to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, as healthcare costs can be significant. Staying informed about any travel advisories issued by the Philippine government is also a prudent step before your journey.
