The room was tiny, with no heating in the bathroom (there was a heated towel rail but the electricity had been cut off to it), and when we arrived, we had to ask for more towels and hangers as there was only one hand towel and one shower towel and three hangers. We couldn’t book any spa treatments because there weee no staff.

Hotel itself was grubby, the bathroom dirty, kettle mouldy, the chicken was pink and undercooked, ridiculously expensive for what it was, it was dated and just generally not worth it.

Stayed in 'executive' room, but this was far from executive. Decor, carpets, bathroom all dated. Would have been a nice room in 1985 maybes. Room was also freezing cold with one slim radiator heating a substantially sized room. Gym and spa were just as dated. Very small gym with limited equipment and poolarea was no better. Restaurant- Ordered half a chicken and chips, which took nearly one hour to be served. What was served was 2 chicken thighs, one of which was undercooked and pink red throughout. I left this thigh for obvious reasons. Asked if the meal was ok, i explained no as the meat was not properly cooked. I also asked if it was infact half a chicken as there was no breast. To my astonishment, the lady said they had changed suppliers and only supplied with 2 thighs??? Never again will I stop in this hotel.

The hotel is well situated on a main road and not too far from motorways. the upper floor has attic style rooms with some sloped ceilings. Well equipped and comfortable rooms and the heating works well in all areas. The spa area has a wonderful heated pool, steam room, sauna and a well equipped gym. Rooms at the rear have a view of the golf course and the grounds and the surrounding landscape are beautiful. The restaurant is spacious and breakfast offerings are of a standard nature. Staff throughout the hotel are mostly pleasant and helpful. A fellow traveller had a room above the area of the reception/ restaurant/ kitchen. If you are here you will get little if any peace for the continual banging of double doors and moving of furniture by the staff. Indeed the building is full of poorly hung double fire doors that most people allow to slam together- these desperately need repositioning or upgrading to soft close ones.,

On arrival it was nice to see plenty of parking and a clean entrance however our happiness was short lived as at the desk we were presented with a large declaration to sign regarding our dogs stay, and clear letters stating that the cost is £15 per dog, per night. Not the £15 per dog per stay, as detailed in the Expedia listing. On querying this we were told that The Abbey Hotel considers each night to be "one stay". I find such an excuse incredibly weak, especially when it increased the cost of our multi-stay-stay, by 20%. I made it clear that they needed to correct the listing and note that to date, it still hasn't been. Given the way it was handled, we will not be returning.

Brasserie restaurant not available on Saturday 29th November despite booking this restaurant on line on Thursday 27th. There was a private function in that area but this would have known about for a while. All hotel guests were moved to the Tawney bar with a smaller menu on offer.
