I'll definitely be back at Rumah Kito Hotel. The food is delicious, the rooms are spacious, and the hotel is beautiful. There are fish to feed in front of the room, which is an added activity for the kids, besides swimming and afternoon walks around the hotel. And it has a Smart TV. The kids stayed at the hotel all day and didn't complain. The room service was also delicious, with a wide selection of food. There's an ice cream stand next to the reception.

The staff was very friendly, I arrived at the hotel after check-in time, namely 02.30 in the morning, it turned out that the staff had placed their cell phone number in front of the gate, when the hotel staff called immediately the gate was opened, and they still wanted to come in and stay. The place is very clean, comfortable, the water runs smoothly, the AC is in good condition, not noisy, and close to places to eat.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Baru City

Baru City, located within the culinary landscape of Indonesia, offers a distinct gastronomic journey that reflects its local heritage and influences. While Indonesian cuisine is celebrated globally, Baru City presents unique regional specialties that are a must-try for any visitor. Dishes often feature a harmonious blend of spices, fresh ingredients, and traditional cooking methods, providing a flavour profile that is both familiar and excitingly new for international palates. Exploring these local tastes is central to understanding the city's culture.

The culinary scene in Baru City is best explored through its diverse dining establishments, from bustling local markets to established restaurants. Areas like the vicinity of Jambi Town Square and the Simpang Rimbo commercial area are hotspots for food lovers, offering a wide array of options. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified eateries is generally straightforward, as Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and many restaurants proudly display their Halal status, ensuring a comfortable dining experience for all.

Dining in Baru City offers remarkable value, especially when compared to Western standards. Street food and local warungs can provide a delicious meal for as little as ₱ 50-100 (approximately $1-2 USD), while mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 200-500 (approximately $4-10 USD) per person for a full meal. Even upscale dining experiences remain accessible, with prices rarely exceeding ₱ 1,000-1,500 (approximately $20-30 USD) for a multi-course meal, making it an affordable destination for food enthusiasts.

When dining in Baru City, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are often communal, and it's polite to wait for elders or hosts to begin eating. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, usually around 5-10%. While many establishments accept credit cards, carrying some local currency (Indonesian Rupiah) is advisable for street food vendors and smaller eateries. Familiarizing yourself with basic Indonesian phrases for ordering food can also be very helpful and appreciated by locals.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Baru City

Understanding and respecting local customs is key to a smooth and enjoyable visit to Baru City. Indonesians are generally known for their politeness and hospitality, but certain social norms are important for international visitors to be aware of. For instance, it's customary to use your right hand when giving or receiving items, as the left hand is traditionally considered unclean. Dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or more conservative neighbourhoods, is also highly recommended to show respect for local culture.

When visiting popular landmarks like Jambi Town Square or the area around BRI Unit Simpang Rimbo, maintaining respectful behaviour is paramount. While these are public spaces, dressing appropriately – avoiding overly revealing clothing – is advisable. Always ask for permission before taking photographs of individuals, particularly women and children. Be mindful of noise levels and avoid disruptive behaviour. Observing how locals interact and follow suit is often the best way to navigate social etiquette in these public areas.

Safety in Baru City is generally good, but as with any travel destination, exercising common sense is important. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. For transportation, utilizing reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek is a safe and convenient option, offering transparent pricing. It's also wise to have offline maps downloaded and to share your travel plans with someone back home, providing an extra layer of security.

In case of emergencies, knowing key contact numbers is vital. For police assistance, dial 110. For medical emergencies, contact ambulance services at 118. While there might not be a dedicated tourist police force in Baru City, local police are generally helpful. For Filipino travellers, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta is the primary point of contact for consular assistance, though it's always wise to check for any local consulates or honorary consuls. Travel insurance is highly recommended for all international visitors to cover unforeseen medical or personal emergencies.

Getting to Baru City and Getting Around

Reaching Baru City from the Philippines involves a flight, typically with one or more layovers, as direct routes are uncommon. Travellers departing from Manila (NAIA/MNL) or Cebu (CEB) can expect flight durations ranging from 8 to 15 hours, depending on the layover city and airline. Airlines such as Garuda Indonesia, Singapore Airlines, or Malaysia Airlines often service this route, with estimated costs in PHP varying significantly based on booking time and season, but generally ranging from ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000 for a round trip. The primary airport serving Baru City is Sultan Thaha Airport (DJB) in Jambi, with transfer times to the city centre typically around 30-45 minutes. You can easily book flight options that suit your schedule and budget.

Navigating Baru City is relatively straightforward, with a mix of local transport options available. Ride-hailing apps like Grab and Gojek are widely used and offer a convenient and affordable way to get around, providing both car and motorcycle taxi services. For those seeking a more local experience, bemo (minibuses) and angkot (shared taxis) operate on fixed routes, though they can be crowded and less predictable for tourists. Metered taxis are also available, but it's advisable to ensure the meter is used or to agree on a fare beforehand.

The best time to visit Baru City generally falls within the dry season, from May to September. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and less humid, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and sightseeing. While this period can be considered peak season, especially around local holidays, hotel prices and crowd levels are generally more moderate compared to major international tourist destinations. Visiting during the shoulder months of April or October can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Before embarking on your trip to Baru City, a few pre-departure preparations are essential. Ensure you have the local currency, Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), for smaller purchases and transport, though major hotels and larger establishments accept credit cards. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport or in the city can provide affordable data access for navigation and communication. Essential apps to download include a reliable maps application, a translation app, and your preferred ride-hailing service.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Indonesia, including the region of Baru City, understanding the visa requirements is crucial. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are typically granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for short stays, usually up to 30 days. This exemption allows for tourism and business purposes. It is imperative to ensure your Philippine passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your intended date of entry into Indonesia and that you possess proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket.

The application process for visa-free entry is straightforward upon arrival at Indonesian immigration checkpoints. You will present your passport and may be asked to provide details about your trip, including your accommodation in Baru City and the purpose of your visit. While no visa fee is charged for this exemption, travellers should be prepared for potential immigration inquiries. It is always recommended to check the latest visa regulations with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines or the Directorate General of Immigration of Indonesia prior to your travel dates, as policies can change.

While visa-free entry is generally available, it is the traveller's responsibility to confirm the most up-to-date requirements before booking flights and accommodation. Policies can be subject to change based on bilateral agreements and government directives. Therefore, it is strongly advised to verify your entry status directly with official Indonesian immigration channels or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines. This proactive approach ensures a smooth and hassle-free journey to Baru City and avoids any last-minute complications at the point of entry.
