This is a perfect staycation, the glamping is cool, the view is of the river and rice fields, a perfect place to relax even though there is no sign to the location but on the maps it is correct. All the staff are friendly, the place is clean, the food is really delicious, the coffee is also really good and the plus point is that I came there at 12 o'clock to wait for check in at 14 and it turned out I could check in early because the room was ready. Thanks a lot to Lintang Luku, one day will come back here again 😁

More about hotels in Licin

Licin: A Gateway to East Java's Volcanic Wonders

Indonesia, an archipelago renowned for its diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage, offers countless destinations that captivate international travellers. Among these, Licin, situated in the Banyuwangi Regency of East Java, stands out as a unique entry point to some of the region's most dramatic natural attractions. While not a bustling metropolis, Licin serves as a crucial base for exploring the iconic Ijen Crater, famous for its mesmerizing blue flames and acidic lake, and the serene beauty of Paglak Petung. For travellers from the Philippines, seeking an adventure beyond the usual tourist trails, Licin presents an opportunity to experience raw, untamed nature coupled with a burgeoning hospitality scene.

The appeal of Licin lies in its distinct geographical positioning, offering a blend of accessibility and immersion. Unlike more developed tourist hubs, Licin retains a more authentic feel, allowing visitors to connect with the local environment and culture more intimately. The region's varied terrain, from lush agricultural lands to the rugged slopes leading to volcanic peaks, creates a dynamic backdrop for exploration. This geographical diversity translates into a varied accommodation landscape, with options ranging from rustic guesthouses to more upscale resorts, each offering a different perspective on the Licin experience.

For Filipino travellers, Licin presents an intriguing value proposition. With a starting price of around ₱ 292.51 per night, it offers an accessible entry point into a region celebrated for its natural beauty. While the area is noted for its luxury stays, the overall cost of accommodation and activities can be significantly more affordable compared to other international destinations. This makes Licin an attractive option for those looking to stretch their travel budget without compromising on unique experiences, especially when considering the exchange rate from Philippine Pesos.

The accommodation options in Licin reflect its evolving tourism landscape. For instance, the Grand Harvest Resort & Villas - Ijen offers a more established, comfortable stay with extensive outdoor facilities, while Bobocabin Kawah Ijen, Banyuwangi provides a modern, cabin-style experience closer to the natural wonders. These diverse offerings mean that travellers can tailor their stay to their preferences, whether seeking a family-friendly environment or a more adventurous, nature-focused retreat. Planning your trip and deciding where to book hotel in Licin is the first step to unlocking its unique charm.

Licin is particularly well-suited for a range of international travellers. For those from the United States and Europe, it offers an off-the-beaten-path adventure, a chance to witness geological marvels like the Ijen Crater that are distinct from their usual travel experiences. Indian travellers may find the connectivity and the potential for diverse culinary experiences appealing, alongside the affordability. While direct connections from Africa might be less common, the allure of unique natural phenomena and the opportunity for cultural immersion can still draw adventurous spirits from the continent.

Best Areas to Stay in Licin

Licin, while a region rather than a single city, presents distinct areas that cater to different travel preferences. Understanding these nuances is key for international visitors, particularly those from the Philippines, to select a base that best complements their itinerary. Whether your priority is proximity to natural wonders, a tranquil escape, or convenient access to local life, choosing the right neighbourhood within Licin can significantly shape your overall experience and the ease of your explorations.

Licin Central & Near Ijen Crater Access

This area forms the primary hub for accessing the famed Ijen Crater, making it a prime location for travellers focused on witnessing the blue fire and the volcanic landscape. The vibe here is one of anticipation and adventure, with a constant flow of trekkers and nature enthusiasts. For international visitors, especially those from the US and Europe seeking dramatic natural phenomena, staying in this vicinity offers unparalleled convenience for early morning excursions to the crater. It’s a place where the raw power of nature is ever-present.

Accommodation here ranges from comfortable hotels to more rustic guesthouses, often featuring amenities geared towards hikers. You'll find local eateries serving Indonesian staples, providing an authentic taste of the region. Getting to this area typically involves a transfer from Banyuwangi's airport or ferry port, followed by a local taxi or pre-arranged transport. It's the ideal starting point for those eager to book attractions like guided Ijen Crater tours, ensuring you don't miss the most sought-after experiences.

Paglak Petung and Surrounding Villages

This area offers a more tranquil and immersive experience, focusing on the natural beauty surrounding Paglak Petung, known for its waterfalls and lush greenery. The atmosphere is serene and laid-back, appealing to travellers seeking a respite from more crowded tourist spots. For visitors from India and other parts of Asia, the verdant landscapes and the opportunity for gentle exploration might resonate well. It provides a glimpse into rural Indonesian life, away from the immediate intensity of the volcanic sites.

Lodging options here tend to be smaller guesthouses and homestays, offering a more personal touch and a chance to interact with local communities. Dining is often focused on home-cooked meals, emphasizing fresh, local ingredients. Access to this area is usually via private car or motorbike taxi from the main Licin access points. It’s a perfect base for those interested in nature walks, bird watching, and experiencing the slower pace of life, with Paglak Petung itself being a key natural draw.

Agricultural Foothills and Rural Retreats

This encompasses the broader rural expanses surrounding Licin, characterized by coffee plantations, rice paddies, and smaller villages. It's an area that appeals to travellers looking for a deeper connection with the land and a peaceful retreat. The vibe is one of quietude and natural beauty, ideal for those who appreciate scenic drives and a slower pace. European travellers seeking an authentic countryside experience, or anyone looking for a digital detox, would find this area particularly appealing.

Accommodation here often includes charming villas, eco-lodges, and farm stays, providing a unique lodging experience. Expect to find locally sourced food, with opportunities to sample fresh produce and regional specialties. Reaching these more secluded spots requires private transport, often arranged in advance. This area is excellent for exploring the agricultural heart of Licin, enjoying scenic vistas, and experiencing a more authentic, less commercialized side of East Java, far from the typical tourist trails.

Banyuwangi Town Outskirts (for transit convenience)

While technically just outside the immediate Licin region, the outskirts of Banyuwangi town offer a practical base for travellers who prioritize ease of access to transportation hubs, including the ferry port and airport, while still being within reasonable driving distance of Licin's attractions. The atmosphere is more functional, with a mix of local businesses and developing tourist facilities. This area is a sensible choice for Filipino travellers, especially those on shorter trips or with tight schedules, who value efficient transit.

You'll find a wider range of hotels here, from budget-friendly options to mid-range establishments, catering to a diverse clientele. Numerous local restaurants and cafes are available, offering a broad spectrum of Indonesian cuisine. This location is ideal for those who want to easily connect to other parts of Java or for arrival and departure days. It balances the convenience of transport links with the ability to still explore Licin's natural wonders on day trips, making it a strategic choice for logistical planning.

A Culinary Journey Through Licin

Licin, while primarily known for its natural attractions, offers a culinary landscape that reflects the rich gastronomic traditions of East Java. For Filipino travellers, exploring local food is an integral part of the travel experience, and Licin provides opportunities to sample authentic Indonesian dishes. The cuisine here is characterized by its use of fresh, local ingredients, often with a delightful balance of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. From roadside warungs to more established eateries, the food scene offers a genuine taste of Indonesian life.

Key dishes to seek out include Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Mie Goreng (fried noodles), and Ayam Goreng (fried chicken), which are staples across Indonesia but often prepared with local twists in Licin. For those venturing towards Ijen Crater, you might find vendors offering simple snacks and drinks to fuel your trek. Near Paglak Petung, expect dishes that highlight fresh produce and perhaps local fish if there are nearby water bodies. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified eateries is generally straightforward in Indonesia, with many establishments adhering to Halal practices.

The cost of dining in Licin is generally very affordable, especially when compared to international standards. Street food and meals at local warungs can range from ₱ 50 to ₱ 150 per person. Mid-range restaurants might charge between ₱ 200 to ₱ 400 per person for a full meal. Even more upscale dining experiences at resorts are likely to be significantly less expensive than comparable establishments in the US or Europe, offering excellent value for money for travellers from all backgrounds.

When dining in Licin, it's helpful to be aware of local customs. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, typically around 10%. Meal times are generally similar to Western schedules, with lunch being the main meal of the day. It's advisable to try local specialties and be open to new flavors. While many Indonesians speak some English, learning a few basic Bahasa Indonesia phrases can go a long way in enhancing your dining experience and showing respect for the local culture.

Local Etiquette & Safety in Licin

Navigating Licin with Respect and Awareness

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Licin

Understanding local etiquette is crucial for a respectful and enjoyable trip to Licin. Indonesians are generally known for their politeness and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a gentle demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use your right hand for giving and receiving items, as the left hand is sometimes considered unclean. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites or rural villages, covering shoulders and knees. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, so it's best to keep them discreet.

When visiting natural landmarks like Ijen Crater and Paglak Petung, it's important to be mindful of the environment and local customs. Respect any designated pathways and avoid littering. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask for permission before taking close-up photos of people. For Ijen Crater, especially if visiting during the blue fire tours, be prepared for crowds and follow guides' instructions for safety. Paglak Petung, being a natural area, requires respect for its ecosystem.

Safety in Licin is generally good, with petty crime being uncommon in tourist areas. However, as with any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. For transportation, using ride-hailing apps like Grab is a convenient and relatively safe option. If using local taxis, ensure they use a meter or agree on a fare beforehand. For Filipino travellers, familiarizing yourself with basic safety tips for Southeast Asia is always recommended.

In case of emergencies, local police can be contacted via emergency numbers. For urgent medical assistance, seek out the nearest clinic or hospital. Filipino travellers should be aware of the location of the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, and its consular services, though it's a significant distance from Licin. It's also advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and to be aware of any advisories from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) regarding travel to Indonesia.

Travel Guide to Licin

Your Essential Guide to Licin

Getting to Licin and Getting Around

For travellers from the Philippines, reaching Licin typically involves flying into Banyuwangi Airport (BWX) or a larger nearby airport like Surabaya's Juanda International Airport (SUB), followed by a land transfer. Flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to Surabaya usually involve one or more layovers, often in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, with total travel times ranging from 8 to 15 hours. The cost for a round-trip ticket can vary significantly, but budget around ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000 per person. From Surabaya, you can take a train or bus to Banyuwangi, and then a taxi or local transport to Licin. Booking your book flight in advance is recommended for better fares.

Once in Licin, getting around can be an adventure in itself. Local transport options include 'ojek' (motorcycle taxis) for short distances, 'bemo' (minibuses), and private car hires. For exploring the Ijen Crater area, hiring a local guide with a vehicle is often the most practical and safest option, especially for early morning treks. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are available in the broader Banyuwangi area and can be useful for transfers to and from the town centre. Fares are generally affordable, with short ojek rides costing as little as ₱ 30-50.

The best time to visit Licin is during the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is more stable, with less rainfall, making it ideal for trekking and outdoor activities like visiting Ijen Crater and Paglak Petung. The shoulder months of April and October can also be pleasant, with fewer crowds. Peak season, coinciding with European and US summer holidays, will see higher prices and more visitors, while the wet season (November to March) can bring heavy rains that might disrupt travel plans.

Before you depart for Licin, ensure you have your passport with at least six months of validity. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and while some larger establishments might accept USD, it's best to carry IDR for smaller purchases and local transport. You can exchange currency at the airport or in Banyuwangi town. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is advisable for easy communication and data access. Essential apps include Google Maps, a translation app, and ride-hailing apps.
