For a 4-star hotel in the area, it's top-notch, from the hospitality of the staff to the cleanliness and the grounds. Just a suggestion: it would be nice to have water dispensers in every corridor to make it easier for guests to refill their drinks or the thermos jugs provided in the rooms.

Stayed here Friday night. Saturday morning before breakfast, we tried strawberry picking. Saturday morning, there weren't many guests at the cottage, so there were still plenty of large, ripe strawberries to pick. The strawberries were fresh and sweet (not too sour). Breakfast on Saturday morning was served in the pavilion. The food was delicious. The omelet was delicious. The fried chicken in soy sauce was delicious. The stir-fried bok choy was delicious.

To get here, don't go via Ngawi, as the road is very rough. It's better to go via Sragen. The hotel is nice and clean, with a wide selection of food. The fruit and traditional snacks are delicious in the cold weather. It's very close to Cetho Temple. After leaving the hotel, walk up to the top and there are many food stalls, so you don't have to worry about getting hungry. The view is stunning.

I stayed here from September 13th to 15th, 2025. I arrived at dawn, and since their shelter only opened at 10:00, I was assisted by a partner driver. All the staff during my stay, both at the restaurant and the hotel, were very friendly and helpful, and the tour guide was also friendly and helpful. It was worth the price and the experience! Thank you, Atsiri Indonesia🌸

From the cooler, mountainous terrains to more central locales, choosing your base within Matesih will significantly shape your overall experience, guiding your exploration of its natural wonders and local life.

Tawangmangu

Tawangmangu is a popular highland district known for its refreshing climate and stunning natural attractions, making it a prime choice for travellers seeking cooler temperatures and scenic beauty. This area is particularly appealing to European and American visitors who appreciate outdoor activities and picturesque landscapes. The vibe here is one of serene escape, with a focus on nature and relaxation. It’s a place where you can easily spend your days exploring waterfalls and enjoying the crisp mountain air, offering a tranquil retreat from the tropical heat found elsewhere in Indonesia.

The area is also a gateway to hiking trails and viewpoints offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding volcanic landscapes. For those looking to explore further afield, day trips to nearby cultural sites are readily available. Getting to Tawangmangu typically involves a flight to Adi Soemarmo International Airport (SOC) in Solo, followed by a scenic bus or car journey of about 1.5 to 2 hours. It's an ideal starting point to book attractions and tours.

Karangpandan

Karangpandan offers a slightly more developed feel compared to some of the more remote areas, yet it retains a strong connection to nature and local Javanese life. It's a good option for travellers who want a balance between accessibility and a peaceful environment. This district is often favoured by families and couples looking for comfortable stays with good amenities, without being in the heart of a bustling city. The atmosphere is generally relaxed, with opportunities to engage with local crafts and agricultural landscapes, providing a glimpse into the daily rhythms of the region.

This area is well-situated for exploring the natural beauty of the Lawu mountain slopes and is home to several resorts and villas that cater to international visitors. You can find local eateries serving traditional Indonesian fare and markets offering fresh produce. Karangpandan is accessible via the same routes as Tawangmangu, often being a stop along the way or a short detour. Its proximity to key transport links makes it a convenient base for those who prefer a slightly less tourist-centric experience while still being close to major attractions.

Jenawi

Jenawi is particularly known for its natural springs and the opportunity to witness traditional farming practices. While it offers fewer commercial attractions than Tawangmangu, its charm lies in its simplicity and the genuine interactions with local communities. Access to Jenawi usually involves a combination of public transport or private car from the nearest major city or airport, such as Solo. It’s a place where the journey itself becomes part of the experience, offering a unique perspective on rural Indonesian life for those willing to venture a little further.

Karanganyar

Karanganyar serves as a more central and administrative hub within the Matesih region, offering a blend of local commerce and access to surrounding natural attractions. This area is suitable for travellers who prefer to be closer to amenities, transportation networks, and a wider range of dining and shopping options. The atmosphere is more active than the purely rural districts, providing a good balance for those who want convenience without sacrificing the regional charm. It’s a practical base for exploring different parts of Matesih and its environs.

From Karanganyar, visitors can easily access local markets, government offices, and a variety of eateries serving both local and some international-influenced dishes. It's also a strategic point for organizing day trips to nearby natural sites like waterfalls or historical temples. Transportation links are generally good, with regular public transport services connecting to other towns and cities.
