Staying at Mimpi Resort Menjangan, Bali, as a group of 4 was an experience that beautifully balanced comfort and personal space. The courtyard villa was spacious with a hot spring pool. One of the highlights was how easy it was to enjoy the resort alone. Whether lounging by the pool, walking along the beach, or dining at the on-site restaurants, I never felt out of place. Recommended for those who want to stay away from the crowds.

Excellent views, great services, and strategic locations to go in town, hot springs, and boat trip snorkeling in Menjangan Island. We also enjoyed the ‘free afternoon tea’ every day. It’s a pleasant stay.

Plataran Menjangan was such a good stay. The ranger who accompanied me was so knowledgeable and it was so much fun exchanging stories. I got to do so many things in one day, really appreciated that the people at the hotel actually helped me create my schedule (since some facilities had to be prepared beforehand). The food was good! The view was so zen, the whole atmosphere really. It was indeed a great place for an escape. Loved that I get to see wild Menjangan as I walked around the hotel. Appreciated that the (assistant?) manager proactively sought for suggestions to improve and listened attentively. Also, I almost ordered a drink but I was told that it would have to be brought from the restaurant a few units down, I told him it's alright, went to the restroom, went back and found that drink I was going to order on the table given as a complimentary - this little surprise was like the cherry on top. Really valued this one last gift right before I left :)

I really enjoyed my stay there, despite the very short period of 2 nights. The cottage was so lovely to sleep in, and in the evening I would sit outside on my deck and thoroughly enjoy the croaking frogs that had hidden themselves somewhere among the rice fields. I would recommend it if you want affordable accommodation, away from the crowds and with lots of peace and quiet (in the evening). The staff are very friendly and will do everything to make you feel comfortable, without being pushy. I will definitely book it again when I visit the west of Bali. Greetings from Holland Mulia

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Menjangan

Menjangan's culinary landscape is a delightful reflection of Indonesia's rich gastronomic heritage, offering a diverse range of flavours that cater to every palate. While it may not boast the sheer variety of a major metropolis, the region provides authentic Indonesian dishes with a local twist, emphasizing fresh seafood and traditional preparations. For Filipino travellers, the experience of tasting these distinct flavours, often prepared with familiar spices and techniques, adds another layer of enjoyment to their visit, making dining a highlight of their Menjangan adventure.

The region's food scene is best explored through its local eateries and warungs, which are small, often family-run restaurants. Areas near the West Bali National Park and around the Masjid Jami' Muhajidin might offer specific local delicacies. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified eateries is generally straightforward in Indonesia, and Menjangan is no exception, with many establishments adhering to Halal practices. It’s always advisable to inquire locally or look for Halal symbols to ensure dietary needs are met, providing peace of mind for all visitors.

Dining in Menjangan offers excellent value for international travellers. Street food and local warungs can provide a delicious meal for as little as ₱ 50-100, while mid-range restaurants might charge between ₱ 200-500 per person. Upscale dining experiences in resorts can range from ₱ 800 upwards. Compared to prices in many Western countries, these rates are exceptionally affordable, allowing travellers to savour a wide variety of local dishes without significant budget strain, making it a culinary delight for those from the US, Europe, and India.

When dining in Menjangan, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are typically enjoyed at a relaxed pace, and tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, usually around 10%. It's common to use your right hand for eating if no utensils are provided. Be open to trying new dishes and don't hesitate to ask for recommendations. Understanding these simple etiquette points ensures a smoother and more enjoyable dining experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the local flavours and hospitality.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Menjangan

Navigating a new destination like Menjangan involves understanding its cultural nuances and prioritizing personal safety. While Indonesia is known for its welcoming people, being aware of local customs and safety practices will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable trip for international visitors. This awareness allows for respectful interactions and helps in avoiding potential issues, making your journey through Menjangan both enriching and secure.

When visiting cultural sites such as the Masjid Jami' Muhajidin, modest dress is essential. This typically means covering your shoulders and knees. For women, a headscarf may also be required for entry into prayer areas. Within the West Bali National Park, while dress codes are more relaxed, it's advisable to wear comfortable, practical clothing suitable for outdoor activities and to respect the natural environment by not littering. Always ask permission before taking photos of people, especially in more traditional settings.

For practical safety in Menjangan, it's wise to be mindful of your belongings, particularly in crowded areas or on public transport. While Menjangan is generally safe, petty theft can occur. Utilizing reputable transport services, such as those booked through your hotel or reliable ride-hailing apps like Grab (if available and operational in the region), is recommended. Keeping important documents, like your passport and visa, secure and having copies stored separately is also a prudent measure for all travellers.

In case of emergencies, knowing the local contact numbers is crucial. For police, dial 110, and for ambulance services, dial 118. While there isn't a Philippine Embassy in Menjangan itself, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta or the Consulate General in Manado can provide assistance to Filipino travellers in Indonesia. It's also advisable for Filipino travellers to register with the Department of Foreign Affairs' (DFA) program for overseas Filipinos and consider travel insurance for unforeseen medical needs or emergencies.

Getting to Menjangan and Getting Around

Reaching Menjangan from the Philippines is an adventure in itself, typically involving a flight to a major Indonesian gateway city followed by a domestic connection or a scenic overland journey. While direct flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to Menjangan are uncommon, travellers can find routes via hubs like Denpasar (DPS) in Bali or Jakarta (CGK) on the main island of Java. The total travel time can vary significantly, often ranging from 8 to 15 hours or more, depending on layovers. Booking your book flight well in advance is recommended to secure the best fares, which can range from ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000 or more, depending on the season and airline.

Once you arrive in Indonesia, the final leg to Menjangan typically involves a flight to a regional airport such as Banyuwangi (BWX) or Denpasar (DPS), followed by a transfer. Depending on your chosen accommodation's location within Menjangan, this transfer might involve a private car, taxi, or even a ferry. For those staying closer to the West Bali National Park, a drive from Banyuwangi or a longer transfer from Denpasar is common. Within Menjangan itself, getting around can be managed through local taxis, rented scooters (for the more adventurous and experienced riders), or by arranging transport through your hotel, especially for excursions to more remote areas.

The best time to visit Menjangan generally aligns with Indonesia's dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is characterized by sunshine and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities, diving, and exploring the national park. While this period is considered peak season, leading to potentially higher prices and more crowds, the shoulder months of April and October can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists. Filipino travellers might find the climate comparable to parts of the Philippines, with warm temperatures year-round.

Before embarking on your Menjangan journey, a few pre-departure preparations are essential. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay and that you have any necessary visa documentation. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and while major credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and resorts, carrying some cash is advisable for smaller establishments and local markets. Consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival for easier communication and data access, and download offline maps and translation apps to aid navigation and communication.

Visa Information for Indonesia (Menjangan)

For Philippine passport holders planning a visit to Menjangan, Indonesia, understanding the visa requirements is a crucial step. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for tourism purposes, allowing for a stay of up to 30 days. This visa exemption simplifies the entry process significantly, making Indonesia an accessible destination for short-term holidays. It is always recommended to verify the latest regulations with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your travel dates, as policies can be subject to change.

The visa-free entry for Philippine passport holders typically requires that your passport be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in Indonesia and that you possess a confirmed onward or return ticket. While no specific fees are associated with this visa exemption, travellers should be prepared for potential immigration inquiries regarding their travel plans and proof of sufficient funds to cover their stay. Adhering to these basic requirements ensures a smooth passage through immigration upon arrival in Indonesia.

While visa-free entry is a significant convenience, it is imperative for all travellers to stay informed about any updates or changes to immigration policies. The Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration is the official source for the most current visa information. Confirming your entry status and requirements before booking flights or making non-refundable arrangements is a prudent practice. This proactive approach helps prevent any last-minute complications and ensures your trip to Menjangan proceeds as planned.
