The hotel is quite clean and the service is excellent. The staff is friendly and informative. I was a bit surprised because it was different from what people had reviewed. They said it was haunted, but I think it was safe when I stayed there "alone." The point is, we don't do anything fancy and always think positively, and most importantly, watch our behavior and words. After all, it's on the side of a main road with lots of vehicles passing by every minute, and access to everywhere is easy. It's still okay.

Pace: A Gateway to East Java's Undiscovered Charms

For the discerning Filipino traveller seeking an authentic Indonesian experience beyond the usual tourist trails, Pace offers a compelling proposition. This region, located within East Java, presents a unique blend of cultural immersion and natural beauty that often eludes more frequented destinations. Unlike the bustling metropolises or heavily touristed islands, Pace provides a more intimate glimpse into the daily lives and traditions of its people. It’s a place where the rhythm of life is dictated by local customs and the serene landscapes, offering a refreshing contrast to the familiar urban environments of Manila or Cebu.

The allure of Pace is amplified by the distinct character of its various neighbourhoods, each offering a different facet of the region's identity. From the administrative hub of Nganjuk to the tranquil, nature-oriented vibes of Ngetos, the transit-friendly Kertosono, the community-focused Tanjunganom, and the more spread-out Ngronggot, the choice of where to base yourself significantly shapes your Pace adventure. Understanding these nuances allows travellers to tailor their stay, whether they seek proximity to local markets, access to natural attractions, or a quiet retreat from the everyday.

With a starting price point that offers exceptional value, Pace stands out as an attractive destination for international visitors. The average nightly rates, often hovering around ₱1,000 to ₱1,500, translate to roughly $17 to $25 USD. This affordability means that travellers from the United States, Europe, and India can extend their stays, explore more deeply, and enjoy local experiences without the financial strain often associated with international travel. This makes Pace a smart choice for those looking to maximize their travel budget while still experiencing genuine Indonesian culture.

The accommodation landscape in Pace mirrors its diverse appeal, ranging from well-regarded establishments like the Vina Jaya to more community-oriented options such as Masjid Darul Ulum Kedung Dowo Cengkok. These examples highlight the spectrum of lodging available, catering to different preferences and budgets. Whether you're looking for a comfortable stay with essential amenities or a more unique, local experience, Traveloka provides a comprehensive selection to help you book hotel that perfectly suits your needs in Pace.

Pace is particularly well-suited for travellers who appreciate authenticity and a slower pace of life. American travellers might find the unhurried atmosphere and genuine interactions a welcome change from their own fast-paced environments. European visitors, often drawn to cultural heritage and historical depth, will appreciate the region's traditional Javanese influences. Indian travellers, accustomed to vibrant local markets and diverse culinary scenes, will find familiar warmth and flavour, while also benefiting from the budget-friendly nature of the destination.

Best Areas to Stay in Pace

Pace, while a region rather than a single city, is comprised of distinct neighbourhoods and districts, each offering a unique flavour and set of advantages for international visitors. Choosing the right area to stay in can significantly enhance your experience, influencing everything from your daily commute to the types of local attractions and dining options readily available. Understanding these differences is key to unlocking the best of what Pace has to offer, ensuring your trip is both comfortable and culturally enriching.

Nganjuk

Nganjuk serves as the administrative and commercial heart of the Pace region, offering a lively urban atmosphere that appeals to travellers seeking convenience and accessibility. Ngetos offers a distinctly different experience, leaning towards a more rural and nature-focused environment. This area is ideal for travellers looking to escape the urban bustle and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of East Java. The landscape here is often characterized by rolling hills, agricultural fields, and a more tranquil pace of life. Visitors to Ngetos can expect a more laid-back atmosphere, with opportunities for outdoor activities and a closer connection to the local agricultural communities. It's a perfect choice for those seeking peace and quiet.

The primary draw of Ngetos lies in its natural surroundings, offering opportunities for hiking, exploring local farms, and enjoying scenic views. While dining options might be more limited compared to Nganjuk, they often provide a more authentic taste of local Javanese home cooking. You can easily book attractions and guided tours from here to explore the region's natural wonders, making it a hub for eco-tourism enthusiasts.

This district is characterized by its friendly atmosphere and a strong sense of local life, making it appealing to travellers who wish to engage with the community and experience everyday Javanese culture. It's an area where traditional Javanese values are often palpable, providing a more intimate and authentic travel experience away from the more commercialized centres. This makes it a good choice for cultural explorers.

In Tanjunganom, visitors can discover local culinary delights in small, family-run eateries, offering a genuine taste of home-style Indonesian cooking. The area is also a good place to find local handicrafts and products, providing opportunities for unique souvenirs. While it may not have the extensive tourist infrastructure of larger towns, its charm lies in its authenticity and the warmth of its residents. For travellers seeking a deeper cultural connection and a peaceful environment, Tanjunganom provides a welcoming and grounded base within the Pace region.

Food & Dining

A Taste of East Java: Culinary Delights in Pace

Pace, situated in the heart of East Java, offers a culinary landscape rich with traditional Indonesian flavours, heavily influenced by Javanese cuisine. A must-try is 'Nasi Goreng', Indonesia's beloved fried rice, which in Pace often features local variations with unique spice blends and accompaniments. Another local specialty is 'Sate Ayam', grilled chicken skewers served with a flavourful peanut sauce, a dish that is both comforting and delicious. For those seeking something more substantial, 'Rawon', a dark, rich beef soup seasoned with keluak nuts, provides a distinctive and deeply savoury experience unique to the region.

Exploring the local food scene in Pace is an adventure in itself, with opportunities to sample authentic dishes at various price points. The central markets and 'alun-alun' (town squares) in districts like Nganjuk and Kertosono are prime spots for street food vendors and small eateries, offering delicious meals at very affordable prices, often under ₱100. For a more comfortable dining experience, numerous local restaurants and 'warungs' (small family-run eateries) serve a wider array of Javanese specialties. Muslim travellers will find ample Halal-certified options throughout Pace, as Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, ensuring dietary needs are easily met.

The cost of dining in Pace presents excellent value for international travellers. Street food meals can be enjoyed for as little as ₱30-₱50 (approximately $0.50-$0.85 USD), while a hearty meal at a local restaurant typically ranges from ₱100-₱200 (around $1.70-$3.40 USD). Even more upscale dining experiences, if available, would likely remain significantly more affordable than in Western countries or even major Philippine cities. This affordability allows travellers to indulge in the local cuisine extensively without straining their travel budget.

Navigating dining etiquette in Pace is straightforward and generally relaxed. Meals are typically enjoyed with a fork and spoon, with the spoon used to assist the fork in bringing food to the mouth. Tipping is not customary in most local eateries, though rounding up the bill or leaving a small amount for exceptional service is appreciated. It's polite to wait for elders or hosts to begin eating first. When visiting homes, it's customary to bring a small gift, such as fruit or pastries, as a token of appreciation.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Navigating Pace: Cultural Nuances and Staying Secure

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Pace. Javanese culture places a high value on politeness, respect, and maintaining harmony. Greetings are typically warm and friendly; a slight bow or nod accompanied by a smile is common. When interacting with elders or those in positions of authority, showing deference is important. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, so it's advisable to maintain a modest demeanour. Observing these social cues will greatly enhance your interactions with the local community.

When visiting religious sites, such as mosques or temples, modest dress is essential. This means covering shoulders and knees. It's customary to remove your shoes before entering a place of worship or someone's home. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask for permission before taking pictures of people, especially in more traditional settings. Patience is also a virtue; things may move at a slower pace than you're accustomed to, and embracing this rhythm will lead to a more relaxed experience.

For international travellers, safety in Pace is generally good, with petty crime being relatively low. However, as with any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or transport hubs. For transportation, utilizing ride-hailing apps like Grab is a convenient and relatively safe option. Familiarizing yourself with basic Indonesian phrases can also be incredibly helpful for communication and navigating daily interactions.

In case of emergencies, local police can be reached by dialling 110. For medical assistance, emergency services can be contacted via 118. While there might not be a dedicated tourist police force in Pace itself, the local authorities are generally helpful. Filipino travellers should note that the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta is the primary diplomatic mission, and it's advisable to have their contact details handy. For any urgent concerns or consular assistance, reaching out to the embassy or the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) hotline in the Philippines is recommended.

Travel Guide

Your Journey to Pace: Flights, Transport, and Planning

Reaching Pace from the Philippines is most efficiently done via flights to nearby major airports in East Java, followed by ground transportation. While direct flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to airports serving Pace might be limited, connecting flights through hubs like Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB) are common. The total travel time can range from 8 to 15 hours, depending on layovers.

Prices for round-trip tickets can vary significantly, but budget around ₱15,000 to ₱25,000 for an economy ticket booked in advance. Upon arrival at the closest major airport, such as Juanda International Airport (SUB) in Surabaya, you can arrange for a bus or private car transfer to Pace, which typically takes 2-3 hours. It's highly recommended to book flight tickets well in advance to secure the best fares.

Navigating Pace and its surrounding districts is made easier with a variety of local transport options. Within towns like Nganjuk or Kertosono, 'ojek' (motorcycle taxis) and 'becak' (cycle rickshaws) are common for short distances, offering an authentic local experience. For longer journeys or more comfort, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and provide fixed, transparent pricing. Local buses and minivans ('angkot') connect different towns within the region, offering a very economical way to travel, though they can be crowded and follow set routes.

The best time to visit Pace generally falls within the dry season, from May to September. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and pleasant, with lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring outdoor attractions and enjoying the local scenery. While the wet season (October to April) brings occasional rain showers, it also means lush green landscapes and fewer crowds, potentially offering lower accommodation prices. For travellers from the Philippines, these periods often align with or are adjacent to school holidays, allowing for family trips.

Before you depart for Pace, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and while some larger establishments might accept USD, it's best to exchange your Philippine Pesos (PHP) for IDR upon arrival or beforehand. SIM cards with data plans are readily available at the airport or in local shops, providing affordable connectivity. Essential apps to download include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for communication, and ride-hailing apps like Grab. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

The application process for visa-free entry involves presenting your valid passport and return ticket to the immigration officer upon arrival at the Indonesian port of entry. There are no visa fees associated with this visa-free facility for Philippine citizens. However, policies can be subject to change, and it is always recommended to verify the latest visa regulations with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Philippines or the Directorate General of Immigration of Indonesia prior to your travel dates to confirm the permitted length of stay and any specific entry conditions.

While visa-free entry is common, it is always prudent for travellers to confirm the most current visa policies directly with official Indonesian immigration channels before booking flights or making other travel arrangements. Immigration regulations can be updated without prior notice. Ensuring you meet all entry requirements, including passport validity and proof of sufficient funds for your stay, will help guarantee a smooth and pleasant journey to Pace and throughout Indonesia.
