Amazing stay here. We went for the motorsports experience on Fuji Speedway track and the museum. Pleasantly surprised that the hotel was a Michelin star 2025 with gorgeous room and the view of the track directly from our balcony room. Food also amazing at the Japanese restaurant for dinner. Excellent and very helpful staff driving me and my son to the track for the gokart. I tried facial at the spa and onsen, and it was great. Overall 6 stars if I can give more.

Food & Dining

Savouring the Flavours of Yamakita

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Yamakita

Yamakita, while not a culinary capital in the same vein as larger Japanese cities, offers a delightful array of local specialties that reflect its natural surroundings and regional traditions. Visitors can expect fresh, seasonal ingredients prepared with meticulous care. A must-try is the local soba, often made with buckwheat grown in the surrounding highlands, offering a distinct texture and flavour. Many restaurants in the area also feature dishes highlighting freshwater fish from nearby rivers and lakes, prepared either grilled or simmered.

For an authentic dining experience, exploring the areas around Lake Yamanaka and the smaller towns within Ashigarakami is recommended. Local izakayas (Japanese pubs) are excellent places to sample a variety of small dishes, from grilled skewers to pickled vegetables, often accompanied by local sake. For those seeking Halal options, it is advisable to research restaurants in advance, as dedicated Halal establishments may be scarce. However, many restaurants can accommodate dietary needs if informed beforehand, and vegetarian options are generally available.

The cost of dining in Yamakita offers good value for international travellers. A casual meal at an izakaya or a bowl of soba can range from ₱ 400 to ₱ 800 (approximately $7-$14 USD). Mid-range restaurants offering set meals or more elaborate dishes might cost between ₱ 1,200 to ₱ 2,500 (approximately $20-$45 USD) per person. While fine dining options are fewer compared to major cities, they provide a more refined experience, with tasting menus potentially costing upwards of ₱ 5,000 (approximately $85 USD).

Navigating dining etiquette in Yamakita is straightforward. It's customary to slurp noodles to show appreciation for the meal. Tipping is not expected in Japan; excellent service is standard. When dining at a restaurant, it's polite to wait for others to be served before you begin eating. Using chopsticks correctly is appreciated, and it's considered impolite to stick them upright in your rice bowl or pass food directly from chopstick to chopstick.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Yamakita

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Yamakita. Politeness and consideration for others are paramount in Japanese culture. This extends to public spaces, where maintaining a quiet demeanor on public transport and in shared areas is expected. When visiting temples or shrines, dress modestly and be mindful of photography rules. Removing shoes before entering homes, traditional inns (ryokans), and some restaurants is a common practice, so look for designated shoe areas.

When visiting prominent sites like the Fuji Speedway or the Fuji International Golf Club, adhering to specific site rules is important. For sporting events, check the venue's official website for any dress codes or prohibited items. Generally, casual and comfortable attire is acceptable, but avoid overly revealing clothing. Queuing is orderly, and patience is valued. Photography is usually permitted in general areas, but always be aware of signs indicating restricted zones, especially near sensitive operational areas.

Safety in Yamakita is generally very high, with low crime rates. However, as with any travel, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. For transportation, while taxis are available, relying on Japan's efficient public transport system is often more convenient and cost-effective. Useful offline apps for navigation include Google Maps, which works well even without a data connection if maps are pre-downloaded.

In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in Japan is 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance services. For Filipino travellers, the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo is the primary point of contact for consular assistance. It's always recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and provides access to a 24/7 assistance line. Familiarize yourself with the contact details of the nearest medical facilities and the Philippine Embassy before your trip.

Travel Guide

Getting to Yamakita and Getting Around

Reaching Yamakita from the Philippines is an accessible journey, typically involving a flight to a major international airport in Japan, such as Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND) in Tokyo, followed by onward travel. Direct flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to Tokyo are common, with carriers like Philippine Airlines and All Nippon Airways offering services. The flight duration is approximately 4 to 5 hours, with prices varying based on the season and booking time, often ranging from ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000 for a round trip. From Tokyo's airports, Yamakita is reachable via the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Odawara or Mishima, followed by local trains or buses.

Once you arrive in the Yamakita region, navigating the area is made easy by Japan's world-class public transportation system. Local trains and buses are punctual, clean, and efficient, connecting various towns and attractions. A Japan Rail Pass can be cost-effective if you plan extensive train travel across the country, but for local exploration within Yamakita, purchasing individual tickets or a regional pass might be more economical. Taxis are also available but can be more expensive. Consider purchasing a Suica or Pasmo card for seamless travel on most public transport.

The best time to visit Yamakita largely depends on your interests. Spring (March to May) offers pleasant weather and cherry blossoms, while autumn (September to November) provides stunning fall foliage. Summer (June to August) can be warm and humid, ideal for lake activities, but also brings the possibility of typhoons. Winter (December to February) is cold and can bring snow, offering opportunities for winter sports in nearby areas. Hotel prices tend to be higher during peak seasons like cherry blossom season and Golden Week.

Before you depart for Yamakita, ensure you have your essential travel documents in order. The local currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY). While credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash is advisable for smaller shops, local eateries, and transport. Consider purchasing a local SIM card or pocket Wi-Fi device at the airport for convenient internet access. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, HyperDia or Jorudan for train schedules, and a translation app.

Visa Information

Entering Japan to Visit Yamakita

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to Yamakita, understanding the visa requirements for entering Japan is crucial. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are generally required to obtain a visa to enter Japan for tourism or short stays. This typically involves applying for a Temporary Visitor Visa through the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines or its designated visa application centres. The process requires careful preparation of documents, including a valid passport with sufficient remaining validity, application forms, photographs, and proof of financial capacity.

The application process for a Japanese visa involves submitting a comprehensive set of documents to the embassy or its authorized partners. This usually includes a completed visa application form, passport-sized photos, the original passport, a copy of the passport's bio-data page, a birth certificate, a marriage certificate (if applicable), and a certificate of employment or business registration. Proof of sufficient funds, such as bank statements and a certificate of bank balance, is also essential. The processing time can vary, typically taking several working days to a couple of weeks, and there are associated fees payable in Philippine Pesos.

It is imperative for all travellers to verify the latest visa regulations directly with the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines or their official immigration website before making any travel arrangements. Visa policies and requirements can change without prior notice. Confirming your visa status and understanding all entry requirements well in advance of your intended travel date is highly recommended to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey to Yamakita. Booking your book flight after visa approval is a prudent approach.
