What Guests Say About Their Stay

We enjoyed our stay at Gasthof Ami very much. The local scenery is spectacular and the location of Gasthof Ami is excellent for enjoying the surrounding area. We only used public transit or walking while visiting the area and that worked great. Downtown Nikko is a pleasant 1 hour walk. Or if you want the bus, the stop is a 5 or 10 minute walk from the hotel. Places such as Kegan Falls, Lake Chuzenji, Yudaki and Yumoto are all easy to get to on the bus. The room was very spacious and clean. The private outdoor bath was a wonderful feature. Breakfast and dinner were included with our stay and they were both delicious every day. We would highly recommend both the Nikko area and Gasthof Ami as a place to stay while you are there.

A very friendly and hospitable older couple who take care and attention, make lovely dinner and breakfast, with a quaint and private place nestled in the corner of a quiet street. Plenty parking if you need. The 2 person onsen attached to the room is amazing, hot (with cold fountain) and easy to use. The pillows happen to be the most comfortable I've ever slept on, and the linen is soft and cool. Really well done and we felt at ease throughout, even with limited English. Thank you :) Fyi - Google maps will take you to the back door, follow the lit signs around the house, or instead go into the little curved road off the main street instead where the parking is ;)

I had a brilliant time at this guesthouse. The owners were so lovely, kind and helpful. The breakfast was varied and wholesome and plenty of it. The room, although dated, was large and I slept really well. It had everything you needed. It is located close to all the sights of Nikko and a nearby Onsen. A bus ride takes you easily to the lake. I wish I could have stayed longer and really recommend you staying here. The hosts are amazing.

Mr. Ban runs a great guesthouse. If you're not vegetarian, get full board. It's a bit hard to find. Directions: Take bus from stop 1A at Nikko Train Station. Get off at stop 13. Walk up hill past Saitoh Dental Clinic. Walk to end of high stone wall on right. Continue past grassy area on right. A 2nd stone wall begins. Take right at first opening and bear right. Gasthof Ami is the big house at the far end.

Small boutique pension/lodging house with 4 rooms in the main building and 3 cottages. We are 3 couples so booked the 3 cottages that had private Onsen in the rooms. English countryside style cottages complete with poster beds, stained glass windows, floral curtains and sofa. Decor a little dated but overall it is clean and neat. Mattresses in 2 rooms on the soft side so request for hard mattress provided in one of the room. Kettle and fridge in each room. Owner and wife were very friendly and try their best to communicate with us in English explaining the food that were served. We had 1/2 board and the breakfast and the 4 course Japanese/French fusion dinner were very good on both nights. Coffee and a variety of tea options were available for after dinner drinks. The bread rolls were freshly baked and additional servings were allowed. The lodging is about 5 mins walk from the main road and about 10-15 mins walk to the many cafes and mini marts but we drove so not sure how far it was from the railway station.

I had a very nice stay at Gasthof Ami. It's an older house that has been converted into guestrooms, with a common dining area, and both private and semi-public baths (one indoor, one outside). It is dated, but very clean/well maintained, and the service is great. It's a little beyond the center of town, so not so convenient to access without a car; however, there is a bus stop about 5 min. walk away, so that's how I got around while visiting Nikko. If I ever make it back that way I will definitely book again.

Fantastic stay! Highly recommend. This guesthouse is amazing value for what its offers. The building itself is a bit older, so the interior is dated and aged. However, the rooms are very spacious, with multiple bathrooms and comfortable beds. There is both an indoor and outdoor bath area. The outdoor bath house is intimate and private, perfect for couples looking to enjoy a soak together. The owner that runs the guesthouse is super accommodating and an overall fantastic host. He speaks very limited English, but his hospitality transcends any language barrier.

If you know what you're in for it's great! Clean, basic, warm Andre he outdoor Onsen is a treat. Owners speak very little English but are kind and eager to help. It is a cottage- IE it feels like a getaway at grandmas, but with a sweet outdoor bathtub. It's away from town and not really walkable, so know your last bus options. There's also nothing around there at night food-wise so don't expect to be eating close to home. To find it from bus stop 14 (Arasawa), cross to the other side of the the road, walk back towards town a bit, follow the wooden sign for "ikoi" up a laneway then turn right. It's the one with no signage at the end of the gravel area.

I chose this hotel for its low price. I was pleasantly surprised. It is strongly reminiscent of a British B and B even down to the decor. The owner is polite and helpful although not very chatty (too busy?) My room was clean and comfortable. Guests can use the downstairs bathroom which is first come, first served and all rooms have their own bath and shower. Breakfast was passable. If like me you are not fond of pork and ham, ask in advance as the breakfast has plenty of both in it. I can't comment on the dinner since I didn't eat there. It offers a choice of meat or fish. The only negative is that the area does not have any bars or restaurants within walking distance. I got some food and drink from the nearby supermarket for my evening meal. The hotel is easy to find. If coming by bus, get off at the 14th bus stop and walk back to where you see the sign (see my photos below) Turn left here, it is right after a hotel called Mori no Uta which is on the main road. This hotel is mid-way between Toshogu shrine and Lake Chuzenji so it is idea for a weekend away in Nikko.

Nice rooms, ample room. Pleasant but hurried host. Problem is no system to schedule the private outside onsen. So if you come down from your room it is often in use and showing the close sign. Also there is no information on booking that you BETTER include breakfast because it's miles to any place that opens for and sells breakfast, if you can even figure out where it might be. Owners English is very limited.
