Review of Guesthouse Naramachi The introduction and tour by the proprietor as well as the officious explanation of the myriad of strict rules might leave you feeling you have just landed on a prison farm. He may ask for your passport four times if you do not hand it over within ten seconds. The piano music, which plays until 11PM, (doors locked at 10) might be flattered to be described as sappy and is on a perpetual repeat cycle. If you want an early night it isn’t possible. A good pair of ear plugs is strongly recommended - the sound barriers between the rooms are less than paper thin. All paths from bathroom to bedroom pass through the only living area which is charming. There are only two bathrooms and two showers, insufficient for the number of guests. The stairs to the sleeping rooms are steeper and longer than most temples so bring climbing slippers bigger than size 8 men’s – the proprietor will insist you wear them. If you are anywhere close to six feet tall you may want a hard hat – there are low ceilings in some areas. After you have stripped your bed (rule 62) in the morning, the wife (or helper) of the proprietor will ask you to account for your bedding and towels as though you might slip them into your luggage. Towels will cost you extra. Otherwise a great place to stay.

My wife and I stayed here for one night and wish we could have stayed longer! The couple that owns this place are extremely nice and helpful. The Naramachi area is great for walking around and checking our the shops. And the building itself is beautiful with a ton of history. We booked a private room and it was well worth it.

Although this guesthouse has more dorm-style accommodation we stayed in a private traditional room, with two Japanese futons and lots of space ('deluxe room'), which I would highly recommend. There are only two showers downstairs with limited times to use them (early morning to 10am & 5pm-10:30pm) and food must be kept and eaten downstairs. This meant that the guests and hosts socialised quite a bit in the evening, either drinking tea whilst waiting for the shower to free up or eating snacks together.

We are a couple just reach 60yrs old and this is our first experience staying in a guest house. It definitely suits young travelers with budget in mind. we pay approximately A$ 87 something and get the only room on ground floor. Share bathroom, toilets and public area is clean, coffee and tea is provided in the public area. I like the nearby which I feel like living in the local residential precinct.

Very, very friendly owners who took their time to introduce us to their home, the rooms and the area. We could even choose between the two Japanese-style rooms. Luggage can be deposited beyond check-in/check out times. Spacious, clean room (we chose one of the deluxe room for 2 people which was a bit more expensive but definitely worth the price). Nice lounge area which makes you feel at home immediately.

We had an amazing two nights in Nara staying at Guesthouse Naramachi! The owners are so kind and helpful. The house is a beautiful 100 year old house and it felt really unique and special to stay there, as opposed to some hotel. Our room was beautifully setup, and though we slept on the floor the mats were extremely comfortable! I highly recommend staying here if you decide to visit beautiful Nara.

Our only small grouse is the late check in and early check out. Love the quiet and peaceful Naramachi area which has Machiya houses dotting narrow alleys. Guesthouse owner Shunjju and wife were helpful, spoke good English and gave us a wonderfully spacious heritage room on the ground floor. The personal touch was definitely there. It would be helpful if mainlander tourists kept the spotlessly clean (before use) bathrooms and toilets clean after use.

When I arrived the owner did all the paperwork swiftly and showed me around. From a European point of view, this is spectacular:clean, modern, small yes but you get your own space when closing the curtains of your bunk bed, there's wifi, a power socket and a shelf for your bags. Air con works perfectly. Downstairs in the commons tea, coffee and ice water is available. Towels and Japanese yukata are available to hire, 100y each and all the rest of the toiletries are available and free to use. The owners are talking to everybody, keeping updates on weather, visits to do and events in town. The 100 years old building is located south of the old nara, a bit of a walk from the station but still a great place to stay. Highly recommended!
