It's a hostel! Don't expect room service. But it was exactly what we were looking for (cheap room). The added attraction for us was the fact that it is a 125-year-old house. It was great getting to experience sleeping on the floor on futons. As with most hostels, the toilet and bathroom are "down the hall." However, our room had its own private toilet, which was convenient. Check-in was "interesting." There's a box at the front door that has "check-in" instructions for incoming guests. You find the paper with your name, and it tells you how to open the front door, what room you're in, WI-FI info, etc. We arrived late evening and left early morning. As such, we didn't see anybody connected with the facility. It was just like coming and leaving home. A wonderful experience, in my opinion, that well suited our needs and budget.

Haruya Umekoji is so charming and authentic. Less than 10 minutes walk from the Umekoji station, and right next to the aquarium. The staff was very helpful and they even have bicycles you can rent out for the day (trust me, it’s the better way to get around Kyoto).

Run!!!! The lady was nice in the short interaction we had but then she left right after. It’s old, very old as advertised but completely lacking maintenance. There are only two bathrooms with no sink so you have to wash your hands in the kitchen. Two toilets and two showers for 7 people. Everything is extra, even towels. I was supposed to stay on the ground floor and it’s so noisy when people walk upstairs. Impossible. Now it’s 5:29 pm and I’m leaving to another place, no way I will stay here. There was no one onsite after 4:30 pm. They refused to refund me also even knowing I didn’t stay there. It’s not about being a shared room, it’s about a torn down hotel that needs urgent renovation!!! Avoid at all costs

The room was clean, but the house was old. There is only 1 restroom and 1 bathroom for 7 bedrooms. People need to wait for their turns to use them. The restroom and bathroom are not as good as other hotels that we used that were about the same prices. I would expect more from this hotel with the price of $70/night. The receptionist speaks English well which is a good sign.

It’s a really charming little place. The walls were thin so please be mindful about noise level. I had some really noisy people that were staying there which was regretful. It could be cleaner because there was mold on the ceiling of the bathroom. Some places were dusty. I stayed on the second floor but luckily my luggage was bearable. The stairs were steep and narrow. I had to be careful to not destroy anything. Overall, I really like it there.

The hostel is quite charming and gives a different experience from big chains hotels and hostels however it feels a little bit weird doing check-in and check-out without talking to anyone from the place. The check-in starting at 16:00 and check-out at 10:00 gives the impression that you are being rob. Also, charging for bath towels was unnecessary (at least the first one).
