It was our family’s first time staying at a machiya. It was an easy place to find upon arrival in Kyoto. The house was lovely. The tea ceremony at check-in along with the Japanese sweets were much appreciated. They were able to help us arrange for delivery of our luggage onwards to our next city. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Staying at Machiya Fukune was an amazing experience! Everything we needed was available, everyone was friendly and helpful, and the relaxation of being in a home as opposed to a hotel room is unmatched. We particularly loved the two bathtubs in our Machiya, so as to have the option of relaxing in a secluded outdoor environment or indoor one. I would highly recommend staying here and would definitely stay again next time I visit Kyoto!

Stayed here for a nice romantic stay in Kyoto. Checking in you’ll be greeted with a friendly staff that will provide you with a tea ceremony as well as a tour of the facility. The location is quiet, quaint and peaceful. It’s relatively close from the main Karasume Oike street where it’s on the other side of the busy streets/shops. There are nice izakaya and private dinner spots to walk by to. And there’s a luggage transport that’s right around the corner

My kids didn’t want to go to public onsen so I booked this place for the outdoor bath. Even though it was hot and humid outside, the hot bath still felt wonderful after a long day of walking. They provide slightly scented bath salts for the bath and a cute garden to look at while you relax. The place was smaller than it looked in the pictures but there was still plenty of room for 4. We stayed for 2 nights and it was perfect. It was fun to walk around Kyoto and then go home to what feels like a traditional house. There was shopping and restaurants within walking distance and a free washer and dryer to use.

This was truly a wonderful Japanese experience and one of the highlights of our trip. We did an 11 night trip to Japan and stayed in Kyoto for 2 nights and the Kyoto Machiya Fukune and it was everything we wanted and more. We felt like we got to genuinely immerse ourselves in the culture of Japanese living. We stayed with 4 adults— in theory we could’ve all slept on the western style beds but ultimately we tried out the tatami mats one night and each and did a bed swap. The tatami mats were actually extremely comfortable and I’m a fairly light sleeper. The outdoor bath was an incredible experience on a rainy evening. Everything was thought of here— from the little heater in the bathroom to the indoor/outdoor slippers. With only four townhomes tucked away off the street, it was quiet and peaceful. We were happy to stay here in the middle of our trip since they offer laundry. Keep in mind with the laundry, they are washer dryer combos and will take several hours to do a smaller load. Overall, it was worth every penny and we would love a chance to stay again in the future.
