Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For most Filipino travelers coming from Manila or other major islands, flying is the most efficient way to reach Cebu City. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary, but booking in advance, especially outside of peak seasons, can yield prices starting from around PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip.

Land travel is an option for those coming from nearby Visayan islands or within Cebu province. Buses are available from various terminals, offering a more budget-friendly alternative. For example, a bus journey from cities like Dumaguete or Tagbilaran (via ferry to Cebu City's port) can take several hours, with fares generally ranging from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500 depending on the origin and bus class. Planning your bus book flight and ferry schedules is essential for a smooth journey.

Driving to Cebu City is feasible for those on the island of Cebu or connected by ferry services. The city is accessible via well-maintained national highways. Toll fees will apply depending on your starting point and route. This option provides the most flexibility for exploring the province at your own pace, but requires careful planning regarding routes and potential traffic congestion within the city.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

The dry season, generally from December to May, is considered the most favorable time to visit Cebu City. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower chances of rain, making it ideal for outdoor activities, island hopping, and exploring the city's attractions. Temperatures are warm, averaging around 30-32°C, so light clothing and sun protection are recommended.

The period from June to November marks the wet season, characterized by higher humidity and a greater possibility of rainfall, including occasional typhoons. While you might find fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices during this time, it's advisable to have indoor alternatives planned for your itinerary. Despite the rain, Cebu City's attractions remain accessible, and the city's energy continues year-round.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu is renowned for its culinary delights, and one dish you absolutely must try is Lechon Cebu. This whole roasted pig is famous for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat, often seasoned with a simple yet perfect blend of salt, pepper, and garlic. Many local eateries and restaurants across Cebu City serve excellent versions, with popular spots often found near public markets or dedicated lechon restaurants.

Another Cebuano specialty is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is "cooked" in vinegar, often with ginger, onions, chili peppers, and calamansi juice. The tangy, spicy, and refreshing flavors make it a perfect appetizer or light meal, especially on a warm day. Look for it in local carinderias or seafood restaurants for an authentic taste.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is a characteristic Filipino dessert that Cebu does exceptionally well. This popular treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's a refreshing and visually appealing dessert that offers a burst of flavors and textures, perfect for cooling down after a day of sightseeing.

Don't leave Cebu without trying Dried Mangoes, a famous local pasalubong (souvenir). These sweet and chewy mango slices are a taste of the Philippines' abundant tropical fruits. You can find them in various forms, from soft and chewy to crispy, in souvenir shops and supermarkets throughout Cebu City, making them an easy and delicious gift to bring home.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuanos are known for their hospitality and warmth. While English and Tagalog are widely understood, learning a few basic phrases in Cebuano (Bisaya), such as "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Maayong adlaw" (Good day), can be appreciated. Respect local customs, dress modestly when visiting religious sites, and always ask permission before taking photos of people.

Cebu City is generally safe for tourists, but like any urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid displaying expensive items openly, be cautious of petty theft in crowded areas, and use reputable transportation services. It's advisable to keep emergency contact numbers handy, including local police and your embassy or consulate.

For seamless travel, several apps can be very useful. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are essential for convenient and often more affordable transportation compared to taxis. Navigation apps such as Google Maps are indispensable for finding your way around the city. For communication, ensure you have a reliable local SIM card or an international roaming plan.

Consider downloading a translation app if you plan to interact extensively with locals who may not be fluent in English or Tagalog. Having these tools readily available on your smartphone will enhance your experience, making it easier to navigate, communicate, and stay safe throughout your visit to Cebu City.

Checking in is promptly at 2pm. Room on 8th floor was comfortablen and clean. Shower had really hot water, which felt good. The walls are paper thin. I could hear nextdoor neighbor sneeze. Along with having an unfortunate night where neighbor had a booze party at midnight. Pretty disappointed because I was sleeping comfortably in a nice comfortable king size bed. Kitchen had mini fridge, toaster, oven and tea kettle, along with cutlery and cutting board. Housekeeping was great. They provided water and kept sheets and towels clean. They're the silent troops that deserve the high room rates. Location is tucked away near great restaurants. Ayala IT is a kilometer away but the traffic to get there means playing Frogger dodging the worst driving intersection and conditions. I wouldn't recommend a walk to travel across the street at night, where car and motorcycle drivers accelerate toward pedestrians like they're in a simulation of "Grand Theft Auto" Cebu City.

We stayed 17 days and the experience was outstanding. Every staff member from hospitality, security, to reception was attentive and polite. Deliveries from apps like GrabFood and Shein arrived without any issues. The location is unbeatable: bars and restaurants on the ground level, and Ayala Mall Central Bloc just a 5 minute walk away. Metro grocery made it easy to grab food, snacks, or toiletries whenever needed. We also rented a car during our stay registering it and getting free basement parking was a breeze. Thank you for the great experience. We'll definitely be back.

We thought this hotel was okay when we arrived. However, on the first night when we were ready for bed, we opened the bed sheets and it was dirty inside with other peoples hair and stains. We called the reception to change the sheets which they did. They asked me 4 times if we had used the bed yet which I replied every time we had not used the bed yet. The real problem was however, they tried to charge us extra money to change the sheets. When I objected, the staff started saying that I was the problem and they charged us to change the sheets because we should’ve asked as soon as we entered the room at 2pm. The outside of the bed was clean so we didn’t think under the sheets would be dirty. Some of the staff were very rude as well when discussing the situation in Bisaya. They did not realize that I speak Bisaya too and quickly left when I started speaking to them, leaving the poor receptionist to handle the situation alone. I will not be coming back here and will advise my friends and family not to visit this hotel.

Security deposit is a hassle because you have to get a bank transfer. Within 24 hours after you book, we were able to negotiate to pay when we checked into the hotel. For the hotel itself, it was spectacular description and pictures are very accurate very comfortable and clean.

Room was great had all we needed, Staff very friendly. Great price for what you is offered. Breakfast was awesome as it was at a near restaurant and you had a great choice. Would stay there again, very convenient to Cebu central.

The kitchen was well used especially for the senior citizens of our group. They enjoyed just making their breakfast leisurely.

I enjoyed the stay as we all have access to rooftop and we’ve been able to view the spectacular fireworks in 360 degrees. This was my second stay. 🎉🎈

This is a great place if you don’t want to leave it often. The traffic around if was really bad. The tv, wifi, and fridge didn’t work but the fix them all very quickly once reported. Staff was nice and helpful.

The room is really sparkling clean and well maintained. The bed is so comfy and the environment is not noisy very relaxing! The only cons I want to point out is the swimming pool is not well maintained and clean, it was dirty.

Room was nice but false advertising. Jacuzzi broke for months no effort to repair. Sauna has huge extra charge they dont tell you about until arrival.
