Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers journeying to Manila from other major cities within the Philippines, several transportation options are available. Flights are the quickest way to reach the capital. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from key hubs such as Cebu, Davao, and Palawan. Fares can range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 5,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book your flight.

Bus travel is a more economical option for those coming from Luzon. Major bus terminals like Cubao and Pasay serve as gateways for provincial buses. For example, a bus trip from Baguio City to Manila typically takes around 4 to 6 hours and can cost between PHP 500 to PHP 800. Similarly, journeys from Northern Luzon provinces can take longer but offer significant cost savings compared to flying.

Driving to Manila is also feasible for those residing within Luzon. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect the capital to various provinces. Toll fees will apply, and travel time can vary greatly depending on your starting point and traffic conditions. Planning your route and checking real-time traffic updates is essential for a smooth road trip.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time for Filipino travelers to visit Manila is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with lower humidity, making it more comfortable for outdoor exploration and sightseeing. Temperatures usually range from 25°C to 32°C, with occasional cooler evenings in the early months of the dry season.

The period between November and February is particularly pleasant, offering milder temperatures and less rainfall. This is considered the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially better deals, consider visiting during the shoulder months of late April or early November. The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers and typhoons, which can disrupt travel plans.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Manila is a culinary melting pot, and exploring its food scene is a highlight for any Filipino traveler. A must-try is **Adobo**, the unofficial national dish, featuring meat (usually chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. You can find excellent versions in traditional eateries and even modern restaurants across the city. Look for places that offer a balance of savory and tangy flavors.

Another essential dish is **Sinigang**, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat (pork, beef, fish, or shrimp) along with various vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The sourness is incredibly refreshing, especially in Manila's tropical climate. Many local carinderias and restaurants serve this comforting soup.

Don't leave Manila without trying **Lechon**, a whole roasted pig known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent meat. While a whole lechon is often for celebrations, many restaurants offer lechon kawali (fried pork belly) or lechon paksiw (lechon simmered in vinegar sauce) as more accessible options. For a quick and flavorful bite, **Lumpia** (spring rolls) are ubiquitous, with various fillings like vegetables or ground meat, served fried or fresh.

For dessert, **Halo-Halo** is a Filipino favorite, a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down. You can find this popular treat in many local eateries and dessert shops. Exploring the food stalls around Quiapo itself can also lead you to authentic and affordable local delicacies.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Manila, a polite demeanor and a friendly smile go a long way. It's customary to use "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority as a sign of respect. While generally safe, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets and public transport.

Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of pickpockets. Avoid displaying expensive items openly. For transportation, familiarize yourself with the different modes like jeepneys, buses, and LRT/MRT. It's also advisable to use reputable ride-sharing apps for convenience and safety. In case of emergencies, know the local emergency numbers. Having a local SIM card can be very helpful for communication and data access.

For navigating Manila, several apps can be incredibly useful. Waze or Google Maps are essential for real-time traffic updates and navigation. Grab is the go-to app for ride-hailing services and food delivery. For communication, WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used. Having these apps on your smartphone will significantly enhance your travel experience and help you stay connected and informed throughout your stay.

I booked 3 days and 4 nights in their capsule hotel. All I can say is, Ate at the reception is very accommodating. He is kind to me and assists me when I check in. Their wifi is very strong. You will get bored on the internet. Only their CR is quite small. Space saving as it were. Maybe that's just a design to adapt to the room. And most of all, I slept soundly there. I will come back here if I have the chance...

I really love your staff, they're soo hospitable and friendly. I stayed in the dorm type of room for ladies, one thing I just don't like is their bed, because the comforter is thin, so it hurts my back a bit when I sleep. So far no more concern, everything is good. Kudos to you my sisters who are in the dorm 😍

A little far from attractions, joining with other apartments in an old building. The most inconvenient thing is the elevator work in a schedule, just 3 time a day, that why I have to claim to my room on the 9th floor. Be care full if you have heavy luggage. Aside for that, the room is ok, staff are friendly and helpful

Eight hostel is strategically located, the dorm is complete with complete facilities: there is wifi, ac in the room (top floor), on the lower floor, there is a kitchen set, dispenser, tv, micro wave and a nice & clean bathroom. Over all: the hostel is nice..😎 only one minus: for the elevator there are certain operational hours, so it's a bit difficult if there is a need to go down or up to the hostel (which is on the 9th floor) if it's outside of operational time ...

good location but so sad that we're warned not to do selfie out there, the place is really convenient, always wi-fi on, nice, sweet and polite service.

Room, mattress and toilet are clean. There is a fridge and lockers in the room. free toiletees, strong WiFi, friendly staff. Minus all all narrow and small, it is not recommended for large bodies.
