Your Travel Guide to Bacolod, Negros Occidental as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Bacolod from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Bacolod from Manila is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Bacolod-Silay International Airport (BSIA). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets.

For travelers preferring a land and sea journey, you can take a bus from major terminals in Metro Manila to a port like Batangas or Lucena, and then board a ferry to Bacolod. This option is more time-consuming, often taking 18-24 hours in total, but can be more budget-friendly, with combined bus and ferry fares potentially ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500.

If you are traveling from other Visayas cities like Cebu or Iloilo, ferry services are readily available and are a popular mode of transport. Flights are also an option from these cities, offering a quicker transit. Driving to Bacolod is also possible, especially from nearby Negros Occidental towns or Panay Island via ferry, but requires navigating various highways and potentially toll roads.

Best Time to Visit Bacolod

The best time to visit Bacolod is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower chances of rain, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring the city, and visiting nearby islands. The weather is pleasant, with temperatures typically ranging from 25°C to 32°C.

The period from December to February is particularly popular due to the cooler temperatures and festive holiday atmosphere. However, this is also peak tourist season, so expect higher hotel rates and more crowds. For a balance of good weather and fewer tourists, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or April. The wet season, from May to October, brings more rainfall, which can sometimes disrupt travel plans.

Food and Dining Near Bacolod — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Bacolod is renowned as the "Sugarbowl of the Philippines" and its cuisine reflects this rich agricultural heritage. A must-try is Chicken Inasal, a local specialty of grilled chicken marinated in a mixture of calamansi, pepper, and annatto oil, giving it a distinct smoky flavor and vibrant color. Many restaurants in Bacolod serve excellent versions, often with a side of garlic rice and vinegar for dipping.

Another culinary highlight is Piaya, a flat, unleavened bread filled with muscovado sugar or ube. It's a popular pasalubong (take-home gift) and a delightful sweet treat. You can find fresh piaya in local bakeries and markets throughout the city. Don't forget to try Napoleones, a layered puff pastry filled with custard and topped with caramelized sugar, offering a rich and sweet indulgence.

For a taste of authentic Filipino comfort food, try Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork, shrimp, and vegetables, often found in local eateries. Bacolod also offers fresh seafood, given its coastal location. Enjoying these local delicacies is a significant part of the Bacolod experience, and many restaurants near Acacia Hotel Bacolod offer these dishes.

When exploring dining options, consider visiting Manokan Country for an authentic Chicken Inasal experience, or check out local cafes and restaurants along Lacson Street for a variety of dishes. Exploring the local food scene is a key part of any trip to Bacolod, and the city offers a wide array of flavors to satisfy every palate.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Bacolod

Bacolod is known for its friendly and hospitable people, often referred to as "Bacolodnons." The local dialect is Hiligaynon, but English and Tagalog are widely understood, especially in tourist areas and hotels. A key cultural aspect is the MassKara Festival, held every October, which features vibrant street dances and elaborate masks.

This is a decent hotel; however, my primary issue is that internet availability was very important—the most important thing—as I needed it for work. The internet at this hotel disconnects every hour and I believe this is a feature, not a bug, of their setup.

They say that first impressions are most important. So when driving into a resort, you’re supposed to be captured by the beautiful ambiance of the hotel and surroundings. I was too busy dogging pot holes in the driveway and parking lot that would have severely damaged my car. There are also no parking lines and guests park so poorly leaving many parking spots unavailable. There is no handicap parking. I thought that was a requirement by law. There was no spots reserved for seniors or expecting woman. I had to park about 150 yards away because of poor parking. One time I tried to park next to the building when I saw another car pull away. The guard made me move! I asked him why was it Okay for the other driver. He spoke no English and kept repeating the same thing “must move car”. Interesting enough… I believe he had his favorites. I saw the same black pickup truck parked in the shade next to the building every day! If it is the owners truck… then post a sign stating that’s his spot so everyone knows how he places his priorities and customer satisfaction.😏 The guard would go out and he’d move the cones for who he wanted to. I guess what bothered me was that I’m a senior and was feeling ill that day. I’ll let the pictures tell the story. Also, spend a few dollars on new towels and provide them at the pool. The towels were like ten year old scratchy rags!!!

Non potable water in bathrooms, dingy and paper thin towels, wifi impossible for periods of the day because of power fluctuations and sanitary conditions very questionable. I understand that there was the pandemic, but to keep using this as a crutch is inexcusable. My main concern is sanitation. This is something that Expedia should be concerned about for travelers. An experienced traveler I would have never considered staying at the Acacia knowing that they were using non-potable water any of the areas that I had to interact with. People who only travel occasionally, traveling with these conditions anywhere could affect their health. I recommend that Expedia immediately expunge this establishment from their listing until they can further investigate this matter.

This is a very good hotel, but the restaurant is not that great. SM is within walking distance so you could go there to eat, there you also find ATM etc.

Fabulous pool, close to Ayala and SM Malls, great free breakfast, accommodation was good, beds good, away from the busy city in a very quiet spot, no road noise, good security, hotel manager was really nice as were front desk staff and the price was good using Hotels.com.
