Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular route for many Filipinos. The most common method is by bus, with several reputable companies operating daily trips. Buses depart from various terminals in Metro Manila, including Cubao and Pasay. The journey typically takes between 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic conditions and the specific route. Fares usually range from PHP 700 to PHP 1,200 for regular or executive seats, respectively. Booking your book flight to Clark International Airport (CRK) is another option, from which you can take a direct bus or van service to Baguio, which can sometimes be faster than traveling from Manila.

For those who prefer to drive, Baguio City is accessible via the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), connecting to the TPLEX and then the MacArthur Highway leading to Baguio. The total travel time by car from Manila is approximately 4 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and driving speed. Toll fees can add up, so it's advisable to budget around PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,500 for a round trip, excluding fuel costs.

While there are no direct commercial flights to Baguio's own Loakan Airport, flying into Clark is a viable alternative. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer frequent flights to Clark from various domestic destinations. From Clark, you can then arrange for a bus or van transfer directly to Baguio. This option can be quicker for travelers coming from the Visayas or Mindanao, allowing them to reach the cool climes of Baguio more efficiently.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

The ideal time to visit Baguio City for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is cooler and less prone to rain, making it perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The months of December to February are particularly popular due to the Christmas season and the cooler temperatures, often dropping to single digits at night.

However, these peak months also mean larger crowds and higher accommodation prices. For a more relaxed visit and potentially better rates, consider the shoulder months of November, March, and April. The Panagbenga Festival, held every February, is a major draw, showcasing vibrant flower floats and street dances, but it also brings significant crowds.

The rainy season, from June to October, sees frequent rainfall, sometimes heavy, which can disrupt outdoor plans. However, if you don't mind the occasional shower and prefer fewer tourists, this period can offer a different charm, with the city's greenery appearing even more lush. Just be sure to pack appropriate rain gear and check weather forecasts regularly.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City offers a culinary landscape that blends local Cordillera flavors with popular Filipino dishes. A must-try is the **Strawberry Taho**, a local twist on the classic silken tofu dessert, infused with fresh strawberry syrup and fruit chunks. You can find vendors selling this delightful treat throughout the city, especially near popular tourist spots. It’s a refreshing snack perfect for Baguio’s cool weather.

Another local specialty is **Pinikpikan**, a traditional Cordillera dish. It involves a unique preparation method where the meat is lightly beaten before cooking, resulting in a distinct flavor and tender texture. Often cooked with etag (smoked or salted pork), it’s a hearty and flavorful stew that offers a taste of authentic highland cuisine. Many local eateries and restaurants in Baguio serve this dish.

Don't leave Baguio without trying their **Strawberry Jam and Ube Jam**. Baguio is famous for its strawberries, and the jams made from them are a popular pasalubong (souvenir). You can find these at local markets and souvenir shops. Similarly, the ube jam is rich, creamy, and bursting with the sweet flavor of purple yam, making it another favorite to take home.

For a more substantial meal, consider **Buko Pie**, though more famously associated with Laguna, Baguio also offers delicious versions. The creamy coconut filling encased in a flaky crust is a delightful dessert or snack. You can find excellent Buko Pies at various bakeries and pasalubong centers around the city, perfect for a sweet treat.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly locals and a culture that values respect and community. When interacting with residents, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to greet elders respectfully. While Baguio is generally safe, like any urban area, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying them ostentatiously.

Familiarize yourself with the general layout of the city and the locations of major landmarks to help you navigate more easily. Walking is a pleasant way to explore many parts of Baguio, but be mindful of traffic and pedestrian safety.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around. Ride-sharing apps are also widely used in Baguio for convenient transportation. For real-time weather updates, especially during the rainy season, a weather app can be very helpful. The hotel is not bad. The room my fiance and I got wasn't terrible. It was clean, no need for aircon, the fan kept our room cool. It would've been great if our room had internet, be advised, NO INTERNET IN ALL ROOMS. For the price we should at least have wifi, no one wants to sit in a hallway or lobby just to connect to wifi. I will say the place feels ancient. Like the 2nd floor outside area geels ligeless. The hround floor lobby was not too bad but the rest of the building felt like it was stuck in time like it was abandoned. The staff was great, the breakfast is free and not bad either, I personally went for the pancakes <3 Overall 6/10

The room was okay, comfortable, clean. Wala masyadong arte. Andun naman lahat ng needs ng isang basic hotel room. Also malaki yung space. I didn't like the breakfast but I liked the coffee and the sunlight coming in thru the windows of the cafeteria. The staff were accomodating. The hallways were... Creepy. Haha pero overall, nagenjoy ako sa stay. Thank you!

We stayed in the hotel 3 days and 2 nights. The staff were helpful and friendly. We were not notified though that we need to request for the rooms to be cleaned. It is not like other hotels where they automatically clean the room and replenish supplies. I was also charged away before we checked in.

My booking via Hotels.com was not found for some time and it was eventually found via another booking agency , so I did not have a good start, though possibly not finding the booking would have been better. There were no staff to assist with bags, half the lifts were out of action for my stay, and breakfast was awful . The room was adequate , but WIFI was only available in a small lobby area by the lifts and not in any rooms and the showers were poor The staff whilst uniformly pleasant , lacked direction and management. Overall a very disappointing stay in a lovely city.

Its a good hotel to stay for a business trip not requiring expensive amenities and concierge. It does the job and people are very warm and cooperative. They are very responsive to our needs. I will go back and stay there when I visit Baguio again.

Our stay was amazing. We were three adjacent rooms that give accessibility to each individual room. Specially my three little grand daughters. The rooms are quite good for family stay. However, there is only one problem - parking space.

If possible, make your breakfast in buffet. Surely your clients will be ready to pay the right amount for this, as long as they get what they want.
