Alona Pawikan is highly recommended. The huts are comfortable and great for its price point. There's a refrigerator, WiFi, TV with Netflix, and free coffee and tea. The staff is very helpful and would gladly assist you in booking a motorcycle or a car. Great location too, just a short walk to Alona beach. There's also a nice restaurant beside it. Parking is also available if you rented a car or motorcycle. As our flight is in the evening and we have some time to spend after checkout , they allowed us to leave our luggage and we were able to use the shower facilities to freshen up before the flight. The best part is the house cat, named Dogfood, who visits our hut every day. He made us not miss our cats we left home so much.

Your Travel Guide to Panglao, Panglao Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Panglao, Panglao Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, the quickest way to reach Panglao, Panglao Island is by air. From Manila (MNL), numerous airlines operate daily flights to Bohol Panglao International Airport (TAG). Airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer services, with flight durations typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but expect to pay anywhere from PHP 2,500 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip. From Cebu (CEB), flights are also frequent and often shorter, around 45 minutes to 1 hour, with prices generally ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 4,000.

Travelers from Davao (DVO) might find fewer direct flights, often requiring a layover in Manila or Cebu, extending travel time and potentially cost.

If you prefer a more budget-friendly journey or enjoy scenic land and sea travel, reaching Panglao from major cities involves a combination of bus and ferry. From Manila, you can take a bus to a ferry terminal like Batangas or Lucena, then board a ferry to Tagbilaran City, Bohol’s capital. This entire journey can take upwards of 24-30 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus to a port like Cebu City and then a fast ferry to Tagbilaran.

Fast ferries from Cebu to Tagbilaran typically take about 2 hours and cost around PHP 800-1,500. From Tagbilaran City port, you will then need to take a tricycle or taxi to Panglao Island, which is about a 45-minute to 1-hour ride, costing approximately PHP 400-600.

For those who enjoy road trips, driving to Panglao is possible, though it’s a significant undertaking from Luzon. The most common route involves driving to a ferry port that serves Bohol, such as those in Mindanao if coming from the south, or taking ferries from Luzon to Visayas and then onward. If driving from Manila, you'd likely take ferries to the Visayas region and then continue to Bohol.

The total travel time by car, including ferry crossings, can easily exceed 30 hours. Toll fees and ferry costs for vehicles will add to the overall expense. Once on Bohol Island, you'll drive towards Panglao, following signs for the airport and Alona Beach area.

Best Time to Visit Panglao, Panglao Island

Panglao, Panglao Island experiences a tropical climate, with two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season generally runs from December to May, offering the most favorable weather for beach activities and island exploration. During these months, you can expect plenty of sunshine, lower humidity, and calmer seas, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. This period, especially from December to February, is considered peak season, attracting the largest crowds and generally higher accommodation prices.

If you prefer a more serene atmosphere and potentially better deals, consider visiting during the shoulder months of March to May.

The wet season typically spans from June to November. While this period is characterized by rainfall, it's important to note that tropical showers are often brief and followed by sunshine. The advantage of visiting during the wet season is fewer tourists and more competitive pricing for flights and accommodations. The seas can be a bit rougher, which might affect some boat tours, but diving conditions often remain good.

For travelers who are flexible with their schedules and are looking for a more laid-back experience, the wet season can offer a different, equally enjoyable perspective of Panglao, with lush greenery and a more tranquil ambiance.

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the period from December to May is generally recommended for most Filipino travelers. However, if you are seeking a more budget-conscious trip and don't mind occasional rain, the months from June to November can still provide a wonderful island experience. Ultimately, Panglao is a year-round destination, and the "best" time to visit depends on your personal preferences regarding weather, crowds, and budget.

Food and Dining Near Panglao, Panglao Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Panglao, you absolutely must indulge in fresh seafood, a staple of Boholano cuisine. The island is surrounded by rich fishing grounds, meaning you can enjoy catches of the day prepared in various delicious ways. Look for grilled fish (isda inihaw), often marinated in soy sauce, calamansi, and spices, served with a side of rice and dipping sauces.

Many beachfront restaurants along Alona Beach offer an array of seafood platters, from prawns and squid to various local fish, allowing you to savor the ocean's bounty. Don't shy away from trying the Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, where raw fish is "cooked" in vinegar, ginger, onions, and chili – a refreshing and zesty dish perfect for the tropical climate.

Another local delicacy that deserves a spot on your must-try list is Peanut Kisses. These are not edible in the traditional sense but are a popular pasalubong (souvenir) from Bohol. Shaped like the famous Chocolate Hills, these crunchy, sweet biscuits are made from ground peanuts and eggs. They are a delightful treat to share with family and friends back home. You can find these at local souvenir shops and markets across Panglao and Tagbilaran.

Pair them with a cup of local coffee for a sweet afternoon snack.

For a taste of authentic Filipino comfort food with a Boholano twist, seek out dishes like Adobong Manok or Baboy (chicken or pork adobo) and Sinigang na Baboy (pork in sour broth). While these are national dishes, local eateries in Panglao often prepare them with a distinct regional flavor. You might find variations using local ingredients or spices that give them a unique character.

These dishes are best enjoyed at local carinderias or smaller restaurants where you can experience home-style cooking. They are hearty, flavorful, and provide a comforting taste of Filipino culinary heritage.

Don't leave Panglao without trying the local version of Halo-Halo. This popular Filipino dessert is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. Each region has its own subtle variations, and Bohol's version is known for its refreshing sweetness and generous toppings. It’s the perfect way to cool down after a day under the sun.

Look for local dessert stalls or restaurants that offer this iconic treat; it’s a sweet finale to any meal and a true Filipino experience.

Room was clean and property was quiet. Short walk to the beach and lots of restaurants to choose from. The onsite bar has the best selection of craft beers in the Philippines!! Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Nice bungalows but a bit off the beaten path, fairly far into a dark alley. Pictures online show a pool and tout a wonderful restaurant and bar called Ken's Place. Neither exist following an apparent fire in August of 2023, and the property didnt contact us to let us know of these missing amenities. They were also unwilling to make any changes to our reservation.

The place is nice and it’s peaceful. It’s a couple of minutes from Alona beach. I like that they have their own motorcycle rental and they can pick up or drop you off to the seaport/airport also for a fee on their tricycle. The staffs are friendly and approachable.

Quiet, clean and reasonably priced accommodation not a great walk from the beach. Very friendly and helpful staff. Motor scooters available for hire on site that were cheaper than the main tourist area. Great bar but only order-in pizza. Only down side, no pool and very dark walking home at night with no street lighting.

From the moment of arriving, the service, atmosphere and cleanliness of the resort was something that really stood out. A well equipped bar housing plenty of various craft beer options sitting in front of well laid out Bungalows. Location wise it was ideal being 1km from Alona Beach so it was close enough to the action but quiet enough so you’d have a good nights sleep. Scooter hire is available from the resort (recommended) and the staff are friendly enough to give you some great suggestions for attractions, beaches, bars and restaurants. Particular shout out to Pam. Thank you for your kindness and guidance! Will be back again.

Cute little bungalows a short walk from the beach and all the action in Alona beach! There is a great expat bar on site called Kens bar where if you are a craft beer guru like myself will be very pleased as this might be one of the larger selections of craft beer (local and belgian) and liquor selection that I have seen throughout most of the philippines! The staff is beyond friendly and Lynn at the bar and Pamela go above and beyond to give you tips and pointers on where to go and what to do around, or just to chat with guests when having a drink at the bar after a long day in the sun! Rooms are cozy and new! Would definitely recommend this hotel!

The resort is decent for it's price. Don't expect anything luxurious and you will be fine. The room was clean but the bathroom had some signs of a need for remodeling and the mattress on the bed was a bit hard for us, otherwise everything was as we expected. The staff was great and that compensated for the small short-comings. The location is also pretty good - a 10 minute walk to Alona beach - although we were definitely not the crowd for that beach - it is horribly touristy and nothing authentic to find there - hire a scooter and drive to other beaches for a better experience. All in all I would stay there again.

We booked two nights at the Alona Pawikan Hotel. We missed our flights and ended up flying in a day later than originally planned. Alona Pawikan’s management was kind enough to shift our booked days a day forward so we didn’t lose a day’s booking and have to book an extra! :D The hotel itself is modern and clean. It’s located within walking distance to the heart of Alona Beach but secluded from the hustle and bustle. The one thing we wished the hotel had provided was free breakfast included with the booking.
