Your Travel Guide to General Santos as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to General Santos from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to General Santos City from Manila is most efficiently done by air. Several airlines operate flights to General Santos International Airport (GES). Flight durations typically range from around 1 hour and 40 minutes to 2 hours. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options can often be found for around PHP 3,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip if booked strategically.

For those traveling from other major cities in Mindanao, such as Davao or Cagayan de Oro, bus travel is a viable and economical option. Buses offer a more scenic route, allowing you to see more of the countryside. Travel times can range from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the origin city and road conditions. Bus fares are considerably lower than flights, typically ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 for a one-way ticket.

Driving to General Santos is also possible, especially for those coming from nearby provinces in Mindanao. The city is accessible via a network of national highways. If you are driving from Manila or other parts of Luzon, you would need to take a ferry to Mindanao and then continue by road. Toll fees can add up, so it's advisable to factor these into your travel budget. The journey by car can be extensive, often requiring multiple days of travel.

Best Time to Visit General Santos

The climate in General Santos City is generally warm and humid throughout the year, typical of tropical regions in the Philippines. The best time to visit for most travelers is during the dry season, which usually runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring the city's attractions, and enjoying the coastal areas.

The period between June and October often brings more frequent rainfall, as it falls within the wet season. While you can still visit during these months, be prepared for occasional downpours, which might affect your outdoor plans. Peak tourist seasons often coincide with major holidays like Christmas, New Year, and the summer months (March to May), when prices for accommodation and flights might be higher. Visiting during the shoulder months, like November or February, can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Food and Dining Near General Santos — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

General Santos is renowned for its tuna, and experiencing fresh tuna dishes is a highlight for any visitor. Look for grilled tuna belly (ihaw-ihaw na tuna), often marinated and cooked over charcoal, offering a smoky flavor and tender texture. Tuna panga (tuna jaw) is another popular, hearty dish, known for its rich taste and succulent meat. Many local eateries and restaurants along the coast serve these specialties.

Another local favorite is Kinilaw na Tuna, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh, raw tuna is "cooked" in vinegar, often with ginger, onions, chili, and calamansi juice. The tangy and spicy flavors are incredibly refreshing, especially in the tropical heat. It’s a dish that truly showcases the freshness of the local catch.

Beyond tuna, explore other Mindanaoan delicacies. Sinuglaw, a portmanteau of "sinugba" (grilled) and "kinilaw," combines grilled pork with tuna kinilaw, creating a unique medley of flavors and textures. For those seeking comfort food, try the local versions of Adobo or Kare-Kare, which often have their own regional twists. Don't forget to sample fresh tropical fruits like mangoes and lanzones when they are in season.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for General Santos

General Santos City is known for its diverse population, with a mix of Visayan, Mindanaoan, and indigenous groups. The local culture is generally warm and welcoming. Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and you'll likely find locals eager to help. It's polite to greet people with a smile and use "po" and "opo" when speaking to elders or those in authority, showing respect.

Safety in General Santos is comparable to other major cities in the Philippines. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets or bus terminals. Avoid displaying expensive items openly and keep your valuables secure. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, particularly at night. If you encounter any issues, local authorities can be reached through emergency hotlines.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A ride-hailing app like Grab can be useful for transportation within the city, though tricycles and taxis are also common. A reliable map application will help you navigate unfamiliar streets. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Messenger. Having a currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget.

The property needs a remodel. The doors all need repainting, there are many areas where the paint has peeled off, and never even been touched up. Many things are visibly dirty, you can see it from a distance. In the shower, they have the smallest possible instant heat, it might work for a kitchen sink or a place to wash your hands, but the shower never gets better than lukewarm. For added fun, there’s a 220 V breaker inside the shower, very close to the showerhead. If you like getting electrocuted, then you’re going to love the shower.

Kind of sad to see some place like this ran down so far neglected. The elevator was filthy, simple things like changing the filters for fresh air. There was dirt hanging out of the filters. Can’t imagine how long it took to get that Could tell it was very nice at one time. The market outside was very very noisy. Kind of interesting, but the cockroaches and the bugs were out of control. Kind of sad. I need a good manager.

The price was very reasonable, close to the KCC mall. Limited dinning near the hotel. There was no micro wave.

Very run down. Elevator has a strong musty smell. Room service is lacking and had to call to get the room clean.

It was my first time with Anchor Hotel. The staff were very polite and accommodating. They also have a small restaurant but the food was very good. They also offer complimentary pick up to and from the airport. I highly recommend this hotel: economical and excellent customer service.

Huone surkeassa kunnossa.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was typical Filipino breakfast. The hotel seems to be old, and it shows. Nonetheless my stay was fine.
