Your Travel Guide to Panglao, Panglao Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Panglao, Panglao Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Panglao, Panglao Island from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Bohol Panglao International Airport (TAG) serves the island directly. Numerous airlines operate flights from Manila (MNL) to TAG, with travel times averaging around 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options are often available, especially during off-peak periods.

For travelers looking for more economical options or those coming from nearby Visayas cities like Cebu, ferry services are also available. Ferries typically arrive at Tagbilaran City port, which is the main gateway to Bohol. From Tagbilaran, you will need to take a land transfer, such as a tricycle, van, or bus, to reach Panglao Island. This land journey usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

While direct bus travel to Panglao is not feasible due to the island geography, you can take buses from major cities in Luzon to ferry terminals that connect to Bohol. However, this is a significantly longer and more complex journey. For most Filipino travelers, flying into TAG remains the most practical and time-efficient method to start their Panglao adventure.

Best Time to Visit Panglao, Panglao Island

Panglao Island enjoys a tropical climate, making it a year-round destination. However, the dry season, typically from December to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, which are ideal for beach activities, island hopping, and water sports. This period also coincides with holidays, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights.

The wet season runs from June to November. While this period can bring occasional rain showers, they are often short-lived and usually occur in the afternoon or evening. The advantage of visiting during the wet season is fewer crowds and more competitive pricing for hotels and tours, offering a more relaxed experience for travelers. The lush greenery of the island is also at its most vibrant during this time.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as late May to early June or late November to early December. These periods often offer pleasant weather conditions without the peak season influx, allowing you to enjoy Panglao’s beauty more intimately.

Food and Dining Near Panglao, Panglao Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Filipino cuisine is diverse and delicious, and Panglao Island offers a fantastic opportunity to sample local flavors. One dish you absolutely must try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh, raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that is perfect in the tropical heat. You'll find excellent Kinilaw at many beachfront restaurants along Alona Beach.

Another local favorite is Grilled Liempo, marinated pork belly grilled to perfection. The smoky aroma and savory, slightly sweet flavor make it a crowd-pleaser. Many eateries in Panglao serve this, often accompanied by a side of rice and a dipping sauce. It’s a hearty and satisfying meal that embodies Filipino barbecue culture.

For seafood lovers, fresh grilled fish and seafood platters are abundant. Panglao is surrounded by rich fishing grounds, so you can expect the catch of the day to be incredibly fresh. Whether it's snapper, tuna, or prawns, simply grilled with local spices, it’s a culinary delight. Look for restaurants that display their fresh catch of the day.

Don't leave Panglao without trying Halo-Halo for dessert. This iconic Filipino treat is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream, often topped with toasted rice. It’s a perfect way to cool down and indulge your sweet tooth after a day under the sun.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Panglao, Panglao Island

the room we booked was the standard fan room. so we expected it to be very basic. but this room was just simply looking like it was not taken care of for a long time. especially the bath room. the doorknob was almost broken off.. maybe just the screws not fastened anymore. the washing sink was not tightened to the wall. just leaning on the standard and was very wobbly. when leaning on the sink during brushing your teeth you would think it will fall down. the toilet seat was not fastened. simple task of just 2 minutes fastening the screws. the shower itself was not heated which was not a problem but I spend around 10 minutes on descaling the shower head. it was almost fully blocked and had terrible water flow. the shower curtain also looked terrible dirty. the bed mattress is thin and soft but just enough for sleeping. but when you would sit down on the edge of the bed you would really feel the massive wooden bottom of the bed. we only spend two nights there and where traveling on a rented bike during our stay and it just didn't feel like it would be worth the trouble or help much to complain. the state off the room said enough. it was all very noticeable when you entered the room. it would have been nice if the windows would have had mosquito nets so you could have been sleeping with some windows open.

Bathroom door - damaged. Unsweeped floors when we entered. No floor rug for wet feet. Yes, we only got the fan room but it would help if they also cared for the room well. The receptionist was also confusing because she first said that there were no fan rooms available and then offered the room with higher price. But when my companion asked her, she said there was an available fan room. I know strategy wise she wanted us to opt for the higher priced room but they should be honest in dealing with clients.

You get exactly what you can see in the image. This is my 2nd time to stay here at Aquatica Beach Resort and it will always be my top choice for the following reasons: 1. Affordability we paid less than 700/night given it's a beachfront accommodation 2. Location 3. Cleanliness of the room we'll definitely go back to bohol and aquatica will still be our only choice for our accommodation.

I wouldn't say it was great or bad, but I didn't have the option to select something in between. The hotel is right on the beach and very reasonable so that is great! The staff assisted me when I asked for a fan and repair for the shower handle. The room I stayed in was dated and not well maintained. For example, the mirror was broke in the corner and the bathroom sink was not totally attached to the wall. But then again it's affordable and right on the beach...

It was terrible. They don't clean the room and change sheets or even replace towels if you don't ask. Water pressure was worst.

This place is good for people on a budget like us. Our only problem during our stay is the restroom lock is defective. Overall, this place is good enough and I recommend this for people who wants to save money and time.

The room is great as it is near the beach. However, it seemed a little bit hot throughout the day. I hope they change the ceiling fan to stand fan. Still, it's a great price.

good location, beach front and near the tricycle terminal, good water supply, they also serve food (and cheaper than any other resto), downside: there's a lot of mosquitoes

The water in the shower was salty. The tables and bed are filled with termites. Location though was ok since its in the center of Alona Beach
