Your Travel Guide to Quezon City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Quezon City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities, flying into Metro Manila is the most efficient option. You can book flight tickets to either Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay or Clark International Airport (CRK) in Pampanga. NAIA is closer to Quezon City, with taxi and ride-sharing services typically costing between PHP 400-800 and taking 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending heavily on traffic. Flights from Cebu or Davao to Manila usually range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 round trip.

If you prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces, bus terminals are abundant in Metro Manila, with major hubs like Cubao and Pasay serving routes nationwide. Buses from Baguio to Cubao, for instance, take about 4-6 hours and cost around PHP 450-600. From these terminals, you can easily catch a jeepney, bus, or taxi heading towards Novaliches in Quezon City. The journey within Metro Manila can vary significantly in time due to traffic, often taking 1-2 hours.

Driving to Quezon City is also feasible if you are coming from Luzon. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) connect to Metro Manila. From NLEX, you would typically take the Balintawak Exit and navigate through EDSA or other local roads towards Quezon City. Toll fees can add up, and the travel time will be highly dependent on traffic conditions, especially during peak hours. Planning your route using a GPS app is highly recommended.

Best Time to Visit Quezon City

Quezon City, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season from November to April and the wet season from May to October. The cooler months between November and February are often considered the most pleasant for visiting, with average temperatures ranging from 24°C to 30°C and lower humidity. This period is ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city without the intense heat or frequent downpours.

The hot dry season, from March to May, can see temperatures soar, sometimes exceeding 35°C, making indoor activities or early morning/late evening explorations more comfortable. The wet season, from June to October, is characterized by heavy rainfall, often in the form of afternoon thunderstorms. While this might disrupt outdoor plans, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, making it a good time for wallet-conscious travelers who don't mind the occasional rain shower.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the shoulder months of November and February are excellent choices. You can enjoy the pleasant climate without the peak holiday rush. Regardless of when you visit, always be prepared for varying weather conditions and heavy traffic, which are constants in Metro Manila.

Food and Dining Near Quezon City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in classic Filipino dishes. Near Novaliches, you'll find numerous eateries serving beloved staples like Adobo, a savory dish of meat braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth, and loaded with meat and vegetables. These dishes are comfort food for many Filipinos and offer a delicious introduction to the local palate.

For those seeking grilled delights, Lechon Kawali (crispy fried pork belly) and Inihaw na Liempo (grilled pork belly) are local favorites. These dishes are often served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce and are perfect for sharing. You can find excellent versions in local carinderias (small eateries) and restaurants throughout Quezon City, offering an authentic taste of Filipino home cooking. Exploring these local spots is part of the travel adventure.

Don't forget to try Pancit, a variety of Filipino noodle dishes, each with its unique preparation and ingredients. Pancit Canton, a stir-fried noodle dish with meat and vegetables, is a popular choice. For dessert, Halo-Halo, a refreshing mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with ice cream, is the perfect way to cool down on a warm day. Many local restaurants and dessert shops in the Novaliches area will offer these treats.

When dining near Astrotel Novaliches, explore the local markets and smaller restaurants for the most authentic flavors. While SM City Novaliches and SM Fairview offer a wide range of dining options from fast food to casual dining, venturing into the neighborhood streets can lead you to hidden culinary finds. These local establishments often provide a more genuine and budget-friendly dining experience, allowing you to savor the true taste of Filipino cuisine.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Quezon City

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Quezon City, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders and a generally friendly demeanor are highly valued. Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas, and always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Safety in Quezon City is similar to other large urban centers. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like markets and public transport. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, particularly at night. If you encounter any issues, local emergency numbers are available, and the hotel's 24-hour reception can offer assistance.

For navigating the city and staying connected, several apps are highly useful for Filipino travelers. Grab is essential for booking rides (cars and motorcycles) and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Waze or Google Maps are crucial for real-time traffic updates and navigation. GCash or Maya are popular mobile wallets for cashless transactions, which are increasingly common for payments, bills, and even some local purchases.

Understanding basic Filipino phrases can enhance your interactions. Beyond greetings, knowing "Magkano?" (How much?) for prices and "Nasaan ang...?" (Where is...?) for directions can be very helpful. While English is widely spoken, making an effort with the local language is always appreciated and can lead to more engaging cultural exchanges during your stay in Quezon City.

If you really don't have a choice or just after a quicky then this will do. Else, I strongly recommend you spend a little more and go somewhere else. My first room has an A/C that doea nothing but pretend its working. Phone is disconnected. I was transferred to another room where the bathroom gets flooded and the phone is also disconnected. Turns out all the phones are disconnected. My pillow smells and I requested to have another which didn't happen. I stayed 4 days 3 nights and didn't get fresh linens or towels. Well you get what you pay for, lesson learnt, this is not for tourists. The staff are otherwise courteous.

Overall, I got what I paid for. Probably the cheapest brand hotel in the area. The staff are very friendly, respectful and accommodating. Their service is probably the best asset of the hotel. The VIP room is uniquely designed with sufficient space. There is no cable. Television signal is not perfectly clear, but he internet connection is strong & consistent. The air conditioning system is well maintained. Power outlet is limited, but they will provide an extension cord upon request. Minor bug issues noted. Maybe they should consider improving the seal around the air conditioning system. I also think that they should make sure to keep the fire exit doors or vents closed / secured, to make sure that rodents could not enter. My stay was generally very comfortable and relaxing. Thanks to the staff who are eager to resolve any issues or concerns, in a very fast and timely manner. The location of the hotel is perfect. There is a 24 hour pharmacy / grocery store beside the building, a 24 hour Jollibee restaurant below the building, and a mecca of other retail & commercial market, open during the regular hours. I would definitely consider returning to this hotel on my future budget trips.

Check in process was terrible. It took more than an hour of wait to complete the check in since the receptionist claimed she can't find the reservation where in fact we have the copy of itinerary. I have to contact the expedia for assistance. The room is dusty and filthy, towels and linens have stained. The blanket has moldy smells. This place has no amenities, no toiletries provided and no free bottled water. I booked two nights for this hotel but we have to check out the following day because we can't stand the unkempt place. This should be taken out from the Expedia list.

The staff were very flexible and accommodating; I accidentally booked my stay a week later than I intended, and they made it work. The room (Movie room) was clean but we needed to call down because we couldn't find a power outlet, it turned out there was one extra outlet behind the tv and the staff provided an extension cable for free. Lighting was kind of on the dim side. Condition of the sheets and bed were bad, there was a tear in the vinyl mattress and the sheets had small cuts in them. Local area was good, there is a market and a bunch of fast food places around the corner.

The room was dirty. We stayed there for 4 days under VIP room but the room itself was not as we expected. Toiletries were not topped up. Not changed. We even have to buy toiletries outside. Not recommended for Long stay maybe just for short stay like 2 hours hook up lols
