Your Travel Guide to San Vicente as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to San Vicente from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

Traveling to San Vicente from Manila and other major Philippine cities primarily involves a combination of flights and land transfers. The most common route is to book a flight to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS) in Palawan. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate flights from Manila to Puerto Princesa, with fares varying depending on the season and how far in advance you book. Expect prices to range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 for a round trip.

Once you land in Puerto Princesa, your journey to San Vicente continues via land. You can opt for a public van or a bus service. These typically depart from the Puerto Princesa City Bus Terminal. The trip to San Vicente takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, covering a distance of about 130 kilometers. Van fares usually range from PHP 400 to PHP 600 per person, while bus fares might be slightly lower.

For those seeking a more direct route, there are occasional flights directly to San Vicente Airport (SWL). However, flight availability and frequency can be limited and often more expensive than flying into Puerto Princesa. It's always advisable to check flight schedules and prices on platforms like Traveloka to book flight options that best suit your budget and travel dates.

Best Time to Visit San Vicente

The ideal time to visit San Vicente, Palawan, for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calmer seas, and lower chances of rainfall, making it perfect for island hopping, beach activities, and exploring the natural landscapes. The months of December to February are particularly pleasant, with cooler temperatures and minimal humidity.

The shoulder months, such as November and May, can also be excellent times to visit. You might find fewer crowds compared to the peak season (December to February) and potentially better deals on accommodation and tours. While the wet season (June to October) brings occasional rain showers, these are often brief and followed by sunshine. This period can be ideal for travelers seeking a more tranquil experience and lower prices, provided they are prepared for possible weather disruptions.

Food and Dining Near San Vicente — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

San Vicente, like much of Palawan, offers a delightful array of Filipino flavors, with a focus on fresh seafood. When you're exploring the area, be sure to try Kinilaw, a local ceviche made with fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the taste of the sea. You'll find variations of this dish in many local eateries.

Another must-try is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular across the Philippines. It features pork, shrimp, and vegetables in a rich broth, perfect for a comforting meal, especially after a day of exploring. While not exclusive to San Vicente, enjoying a warm bowl in a local carinderia offers an authentic Filipino dining experience.

Grilled seafood is a staple in coastal towns like San Vicente. Freshly caught fish, squid, and prawns are often grilled to perfection over charcoal, served simply with soy sauce, calamansi, and chili. This is a straightforward yet incredibly delicious way to enjoy the bounty of the ocean. Look for local restaurants or even beachside stalls offering "ihaw-ihaw" for the freshest catch.

Don't leave San Vicente without trying Halo-Halo for dessert. This popular Filipino treat is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down on a warm Palawan afternoon and a sweet ending to any meal. Many local cafes and restaurants will offer their own delicious versions.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for San Vicente

The culture in San Vicente, Palawan, is deeply rooted in Filipino hospitality and a strong connection to the sea. Locals are generally warm, friendly, and respectful. It's appreciated if visitors show the same courtesy by dressing modestly when not at the beach or resort, and by learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Magandang araw" (Good day). Always ask permission before taking photos of people.

Safety in San Vicente is generally good, as it's a relatively peaceful area. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas or public transport. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. For any emergencies, local police can be reached at their respective hotlines, and it's advisable to save these numbers on your phone.

For your travels in San Vicente and the Philippines, several apps can be incredibly useful. Grab is essential for ride-hailing in larger cities, though less common in San Vicente itself. Google Maps is invaluable for navigation, and offline maps can be downloaded for areas with spotty internet. We had to change accommodation unexpectedly and this was only option with a private bathroom and aircon. We are not the target clientele for this place. The women working there were very lovely and helpful. The room was clean, had a working toilet and aircon. No hot water and we had to plead for enough loo roll and towels. Good location near bus terminal, restaurants and an easy walk to the beach.
