Your Travel Guide to Laoag City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Laoag City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Laoag City from Manila is most efficiently done by air. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific typically offer flights to Laoag International Airport (LAO). Flight durations are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-conscious travelers can often find round-trip tickets for around PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 if booked strategically. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka.

For those who prefer a more scenic and economical journey, bus travel is a popular option. Several reputable bus companies, such as Partas and Florida Liner, operate daily trips from Metro Manila to Laoag City. The journey is considerably longer, typically ranging from 9 to 12 hours, depending on traffic and the number of stops. Bus fares usually fall between PHP 800 to PHP 1,200 for a one-way trip, offering a more budget-friendly alternative for reaching Ilocos Norte.

Driving your own vehicle is also a viable option for adventurous travelers. The primary route involves taking the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) before connecting to the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX). From there, you continue on the MacArthur Highway towards Laoag City. The total driving distance is around 470-500 kilometers, and you should factor in toll fees and potential overnight stops to break up the long drive.

Best Time to Visit Laoag City

The ideal time for Filipino travelers to visit Laoag City generally falls within the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and pleasant, with lower chances of rain, making it perfect for exploring the city's attractions and the surrounding natural landscapes. Temperatures are moderate, usually ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius, providing comfortable conditions for outdoor activities.

The peak tourist season usually coincides with the Christmas holidays and the summer months of March to May. While the weather is excellent during these periods, expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights. For a more relaxed experience and potentially better deals, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as November or February. These periods still offer good weather but with fewer tourists.

The wet season, from May to October, brings a higher likelihood of rainfall, including typhoons, especially from July to September. While you might find lower prices and fewer crowds during this time, the unpredictable weather can disrupt travel plans and outdoor excursions. If you do choose to visit during the wet season, it's wise to stay updated on weather forecasts and have flexible plans.

I'm not sure if this was the normal service for this hotel or if, by some coincidence, something was wrong, but definitively this was not an reasonable stay. First, it took forever for the girl to let me check in. She needed proof of payment, but as hotels.com app and even the printed reservation was in Portuguese, she had some difficulty understanding. Come on, how can't you know if this was pay or not? Something not working well here. Then, when I finally was able to go to the room, I went quickly to the WC, as I urgently needed it. To my surprise, the WC was all dirty and wet, and there was no toilette paper. I went downstairs, to the small reception, and ask if they could clean the WC and give me toilet paper. I could not believe when they told me they were out of toilet paper... I asked them to go to another room and take some, because I really need it LOL. On other topic, wifi just works on the small reception, that does not has a place for you to sit. In fact, there was a frame of a sofa, but just the wood frame. The second floor seemed to be on renovations. The third floor had a small lobby with frames of sofas (no cushion). The only good think about the hotel is that the bed was comfortable and the AC worked just fine. It is ok for 1 night stay, on your way to someplace else. Furthermore, I've noticed a sign where this hotel would rent rooms for 4 h periods. This somewhat tells you what type of hotel this is. Definitively, a bad choice.
