Your Travel Guide to Del Carmen, Siargao Islands as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Del Carmen, Siargao Islands from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Del Carmen, Siargao Islands from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Siargao Airport (IAO), which is located very close to Bakhaw Bed & Breakfast. Flight durations typically range from 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on whether there are layovers. Fares can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found if planned ahead. You can easily book flight tickets through various platforms.

For those preferring land and sea travel, it's a longer but potentially more scenic journey. This usually involves flying or taking a bus to Surigao City on mainland Mindanao, and then catching a ferry to Siargao Island. From Surigao City port, ferries typically head to Dapa Port on Siargao, from where you would then take a local transport (like a tricycle or van) to Del Carmen. Bus fares from major cities to Surigao City can range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000, and ferry tickets are usually around PHP 300-500. This route can take over 24 hours.

Driving to Siargao is not directly possible as it's an island. However, if you are coming from nearby Mindanao cities like Cagayan de Oro or Davao, you could drive to Surigao City port and then take a ferry. This involves significant driving time and ferry costs. For most Filipino travelers, especially those coming from Luzon or the Visayas, flying directly to Siargao Airport remains the most practical and time-efficient option.

Best Time to Visit Del Carmen, Siargao Islands

Siargao Islands generally experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season, typically from March to October, is considered the best time to visit for most travelers. During these months, you can expect more sunshine, calmer seas, and ideal conditions for island hopping, surfing (especially for beginners), and exploring the various beaches and lagoons. The weather is generally pleasant, making outdoor activities more enjoyable.

The wet season runs from November to February, with the peak of the rainy season often occurring in December and January. While this period can bring heavy rainfall and rougher seas, it also means fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for accommodation and flights. For experienced surfers looking for bigger waves, the months of September to November are often favored. However, for general tourism and exploring the island's many attractions, the dry season offers more reliable weather.

Food and Dining Near Del Carmen, Siargao Islands — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Siargao, particularly around Del Carmen, exploring the local culinary scene is a delight. One dish you absolutely must try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh, raw fish (often tuna or tanigue) is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the island's fresh seafood bounty and is a staple in many local eateries.

Another local favorite is Grilled Liempo, succulent pork belly marinated and grilled to perfection. The smoky flavor combined with the tender, fatty pork is incredibly satisfying. Many small carinderias and restaurants around Siargao offer this dish, often served with a side of rice and a dipping sauce. It’s a hearty meal that fuels you up for a day of adventure.

Don't leave Siargao without trying some fresh seafood, prepared simply to highlight its natural flavor. Grilled fish, prawns, or squid are commonly available and are often cooked over charcoal. Look for places that serve seafood caught daily. The simplicity of preparation, often just seasoned with salt and pepper and grilled, allows the freshness of the ingredients to shine through.

For a sweet treat, try Halo-Halo, the popular Filipino dessert. While available all over the Philippines, Siargao's version, made with local fruits and ingredients, offers a unique island twist. It's a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream – perfect for cooling down on a warm day.

Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, especially when exploring the island's less-marked roads. A translation app can be useful, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. I even have to look for someone when I checked out and the vook took my keys for me. Very disappointed as this is a nice hotel nearest the airport.

We stayed for one night and it was an experience we would not repeat. The staff was friendly and helpful, however the hotel itself has seen much better times. The rooms had a pretty bad smell and the sheets seemed dirty. The beds were not comfortable at all and we had a lot of dead and alive bugs in our room. We didn't even think about using the pool since it looked really dirty. We didn't have breakfast, since we left very early in the morning. Both of us had a sleepless night due to the smell, noises and the bugs inside our room. We had cheaper and much better places on our trip in Siargao. For that price, the condition and the room are not acceptable.

The properly is advertised as having a restaurant but that is untrue. The person working at reception pointed us in the direction of the road where there was limited options. Got some packet noodles and asked if we could cook them - was directed to a filthy kitchen where the staff member proceeded to record me cooking them. The room was basic, but filled with ants and insects, they were ok everything. The curtains did not shut properly and in general the property felt quite unsafe. I would not recommend staying here.

Bed & Breakfast probably gives a misleading idea of Bakhaw, it's more like a motel or small hotel. Very convenient to the airport (just across the road) but nothing else nearby. Room was in good condition and very comfortable, asked for a double but got a twin, not sure if this was a misunderstanding. Fairly big swimming pool is a nice bonus. Restaurant has a reasonable menu, but the food takes ages to prepare and always arrives covered in cling wrap - at first I thought it must be cooked off-site, but then I saw a busy kitchen out the back.

The hotel is run down, beat up. Bathroom had water all over the floor from leaking sink. Wifi could only be used in the lobby. No enough toiletries provided. Tv broken. Don’t stay even if it’s the last hotel. If I could negative stars, I so would

Ideal for getting to the airport but bed was hard and only a cotton sheet. Air conditioning was loud but that standard for the Philippines. Staff were great though very helpful. No food available anywhere near after a curtain time.

Mimi at the reception was very friendly though a guy there did not even bother to help with my heavy bags but instead left. U have to ask for ur toiletries and water, breakfast served 7am which is late by most hotels i went to, and NO free wifi in the rooms. I even have to look for someone when I checked out and the vook took my keys for me. Very disappointed as this is a nice hotel nearest the airport.

Very quiet and peaceful place for a group stay. Our suite was so spacious for 4 people with comfortable bathroom space. The dining facility is a great way to hang around. WiFi is accessible to the guest. Air-conditioning functioned well. Unparalleled hotel staff service.

It's clean but the front desk doesn't no knowledge in anything. If you asked them for information the only answer you will know that they are just new and doesn't know anything yet, worst they'll bill you extra for the food that was served. I don't recommend this place in your next vacation.

I choose the place cause it is really close to the airport becuase my initial plan is to spot the turbo propeller planes that lands daily at Sayak Airport. One of the staff went home early during my stay so I was informed that there will be no dinner, so I called the Manila office and they immidiately took action. Nonetheless, I was taken care of.
