By Philippines standards, a nice resort on Camiguin Island. Nice layout with green space. Friendly and efficient staff. Food was very good. Room was clean, soundproof, with a nice outdoor bathroom. On the negative side - the eaves do not extend far enough out with respect to the bathroom, so you can get splashing from the rain within the bathroom. Toilet can get wet, along with part of the floor. Note there is construction next door right now. Did not really bother us as we were out 3 of the 4 days we were there. I would stay here again because overall it was a nice spot, nice layout, and friendly staff.

Your Travel Guide to Mambajao as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Mambajao from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Mambajao, Camiguin from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights typically land at Camiguin Airport (CGM), which serves the entire island. Airlines like Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines operate flights, often with a layover in Cagayan de Oro or Cebu. Fares can vary, but booking in advance, especially during peak seasons, can secure better prices. A typical flight from Manila might cost between PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000, with a travel time of around 1.5 to 3 hours depending on connections. You can easily book flight tickets through Traveloka.

For travelers coming from Mindanao, particularly Cagayan de Oro, you have the option of taking a ferry. Ferries depart from Benoni Port in Camiguin, and from there, you can take a tricycle or van to Mambajao. This option is generally more time-consuming but can be a more scenic and budget-friendly choice for some. Bus services are also available to ferry terminals in Cagayan de Oro, connecting you to the island.

While driving directly to Camiguin is not possible due to its island nature, you can drive to ferry terminals in Mindanao, such as Balingoan Port in Misamis Oriental, and then take a ferry across. This route involves significant travel time and multiple transfers, making air travel the preferred method for most visitors from Luzon and the Visayas.

Best Time to Visit Mambajao

The dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit Mambajao and Camiguin. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities like island hopping, visiting waterfalls, and exploring the volcanoes. The sea conditions are also usually calmer, perfect for diving and snorkeling.

However, this period also coincides with peak tourist season, especially around Christmas, New Year, and the Holy Week. Expect higher accommodation prices and larger crowds at popular attractions. For a balance of good weather and fewer tourists, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November, February, or March.

The wet season, from June to October, brings more frequent rainfall, which can sometimes disrupt travel plans or limit outdoor activities. However, this period offers lush green landscapes and fewer visitors, potentially leading to lower prices for flights and accommodation. If you don't mind occasional rain showers and are looking for a more tranquil experience, the wet season can still be a rewarding time to visit.

Food and Dining Near Mambajao — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Camiguin, and Mambajao in particular, offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects its island setting and Filipino heritage. A must-try is the **Kinilaw**, Camiguin's version of ceviche, often made with fresh tuna or other seafood, marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the island's fresh catch.

Another local specialty is **Pastel**, a soft, sweet bun filled with yema (custard). This is a popular pasalubong (souvenir) item and a delightful snack or dessert. You can find various flavors, but the classic yema is a crowd-pleaser. Many local bakeries and shops in Mambajao sell these delicious treats.

Don't leave Camiguin without trying **Camiguin's lanzones**. The island is famous for its sweet and tangy lanzones, especially during the annual Lanzones Festival in October. If you visit during the season, make sure to indulge in this local fruit. You'll often find vendors selling them fresh along the roadsides.

For a taste of local comfort food, look for **Sinugba**, which refers to grilled meats or seafood. Whether it's pork belly, chicken, or fish, the smoky flavor from the grill is a Filipino favorite. Many small eateries and restaurants in Mambajao offer sinugba, often served with rice and a dipping sauce.

Finally, explore the local eateries for **fresh seafood**. Being an island, Camiguin boasts an abundance of fresh fish, prawns, and other marine delights. Enjoy them grilled, fried, or in a soup – the preparation methods are diverse and always highlight the freshness of the ingredients.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Mambajao

Camiguin is known for its friendly and hospitable people. A common local custom is to greet elders with respect, often by saying "po" and "opo." When visiting churches or local homes, dress modestly. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people. Understanding and respecting these simple customs will enhance your interactions with the locals.

Safety in Mambajao is generally high, as it's a relatively peaceful island. However, it's always wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit places late at night. For emergencies, the local police hotline is usually available through directory assistance.

For communication and navigation, having a reliable mobile signal is important. Consider getting a local SIM card upon arrival if your phone is unlocked. Essential apps for your trip include Google Maps for navigation, a currency converter, and translation apps if needed. Traveloka's app itself is invaluable for managing your bookings and discovering local attractions.

When exploring natural sites like hot springs or waterfalls, always follow safety guidelines provided by local guides or park authorities. Be mindful of the terrain, especially if it's wet or slippery. Staying informed and prepared will ensure a safe and enjoyable journey through the beautiful landscapes of Mambajao.

If you love nature, you will enjoy Balai sa Baibai. The lawns are nice and relaxing to look at. The staff is awesome. They are friendly and can communicate well. The restaurant and bar are good but I wished they offered more fish in the menu!😉 it is unfortunate that the weather did not cooperate. It was rainy, however, we still enjoyed our stay.

Our Mother/daughter stay in Balai sa Baibai was short and sweet…the staff were very friendly, warm and accommodating. No frills and fanfare…basic accommodations, pool was clean. Place was quiet and the sound of roosters crowing in the morning was perfect! I love Filipino food…their chicken adobo was divine…banana turon and ice cream was the best! Hummus was also very delicious. Gambas was good too! Mattress could be updated, but overall…I would recommend this place to everyone

Loved the vibe. My villa was excellent. Maybe one thing they can look at going forward is to offer all-day dining options on-site? Or snacks/ bakery? If they lack the staff to do it maybe have somebody cater?

There are no words to properly describe how amazing this property. The grounds are very lush with many pools and a great bar/deck area to enjoy the view of the ocean (especially during sunset). The private "room" with the high wall all the way around and the private pool created a very peaceful and relaxing environment. I can't wait to come back to Camiguin and this hotel. My biggest regret is not spending more nights here.

It was ok, no tv the first night, no hot water for the first night, no restaurant which really sucks, they do serve a breakfast which on western standards needs some help. Your bathroom will be outside so be prepared fo prepared that

Amazing!! This boutique resort was a labor of love and it showed. It seemed like they knew what your needs were before you did. Our trip isn't over but I can say now that It was the highlight of our stay in the Philippines. We booked 3 nights and ended up adding 2 more. We felt like we were in a friends home with wonderful staff. Look forward to returning sometime.

From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, we were pampered from all the staff & also the owners. As we booked in we were given a welcome drink,we were taken to our vista villa & given a tour of it & shown how everything worked. Later we had afternoon tea brought to us & this was each day that we were there. In the evening a free drink at the sunset bar & a bowl of nuts etc,was a nice touch. The complimentary breakfast was amazing, fruit (plate ),large variety of mains to choose from, (Filipino & Western )fruit drink, water, cereals, tea, coffee & whatever else you asked for. The two owners are to be commended the way they run Balai sa BaiBai & my wife & I will certainly be going back there in our next visit & we have already started telling our many friends about this wonderful resort. The staff were courteous, knowledgeable of the island, places of interest, places to eat & would do everything to make our stay comfortable & enjoyable. 10out 10.

Great morning breakfast, great hotel staff, great room. You can find cheaper options for touring the island vs service provided by hotel. Hotel tour service was very good, but you can find other options....

Great place to relax, disconnect and unwind... with only 3 villas, service is superb and serenity at its best, yo basically have the entire place, the pool, the beach to yourself :-)

This place was amazing! The staff was so helpful in all my questions about the area. We did a tour with the hotel. All the details that this hotel provides were so nice and added a special touch. The view from every seat was perfect. Breakfast was the tasty and too pretty to even eat.

Mosquito island! Fish ponds situated all over area, stagnant water breeding ground for mosquitoes! Beachfront ad but construction right on the beach going on and not disclosed! Loud noises from construction of new hotel next door! No gym, no tv, no hot water from toilet sink! Limited food selection at their restaurant! Water from toilet bidet stunk like sewer!

There are so many things to like about this resort. Location, facilities, restaurant, transport services are a few. But above all else are the PEOPLE who staff this wonderful place. Reception, food service, dive shop, housekeeping…every person we encountered were welcoming & helpful. We hope they are well compensated as they make this the very special spot on Earth that it is.
