What Guests Say About Their Stay

Brian

This was a simple inexpensive hotel in the downtown area of Basco which made it very convenient to walking around and various dining places. The hosts were marvelous, with pick up and drop off to the airport. On a few occasions when it was raining, the owner, Bert Baletin, dropped us at a Restuarant and came and picked us later. The place was super clean and had a roof top that made great sightseeing for evening sunsets.

Your Travel Guide to Basco as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Basco from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common and efficient way to reach Basco, Batanes from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Basco Airport (BSO). Flight durations are typically around 1.5 to 2 hours from Manila. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. During peak seasons, expect prices to be higher, with potential round-trip fares ranging from PHP 8,000 to PHP 15,000 or more.

While flights are the primary mode of transport, there are no direct bus or ferry services from mainland Luzon to Batanes. Travel by land and sea would involve multiple transfers and is significantly more time-consuming, often taking several days. Therefore, for most Filipino travelers, flying is the most practical and recommended option to reach the unique destination of Batanes.

Once you land at Basco Airport, you can easily find transportation to your accommodation. Tricycles are readily available and are the most common mode of transport within Basco town and its immediate surroundings. For longer distances or island hopping tours, you can arrange for van rentals or join organized tours. The cost of a tricycle ride within Basco is generally affordable, typically ranging from PHP 50 to PHP 150 depending on the destination.

Best Time to Visit Basco

The ideal time to visit Basco, Batanes for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from March to May. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with lower chances of rainfall, making it perfect for exploring the island's scenic landscapes, rolling hills, and coastal areas. Temperatures are pleasant, usually ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius, offering comfortable conditions for outdoor activities.

The shoulder months, such as late February and early June, can also be good times to visit, potentially offering fewer crowds and slightly lower prices compared to the peak dry season. However, it's important to be aware that Batanes can experience strong winds and occasional rains even during the dry season due to its location. Always check the weather forecast before your trip.

The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of typhoons and heavy rainfall, which can disrupt travel plans and limit outdoor activities. While this period might offer lower accommodation rates, it's generally less advisable for first-time visitors who want to make the most of the outdoor attractions. The period from November to February can be cooler and windier, with a possibility of rough seas affecting ferry services if you were considering alternative travel.

Food and Dining Near Basco — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Basco, Batanes, you must try the local specialty, Dibang. This is a type of flying fish, a staple in Ivatans cuisine, often prepared fried or stewed. They offer a unique texture and a savory taste that is quite different from typical Filipino meat dishes. It’s a comforting and satisfying option, especially after a day of exploring.

Don't leave Batanes without sampling the Coconut Crab, locally known as Tatus. This delicacy is a true taste of the island's marine bounty. The meat is sweet and rich, often compared to lobster. Due to conservation efforts, its availability can be limited, and it's often prepared simply, steamed or grilled, to highlight its natural flavor. Always inquire about its availability and sustainability practices when ordering.
