Your Travel Guide to Tacloban City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Tacloban City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Tacloban City from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate regular flights to Daniel Z Romualdez Airport (TAC). Flight durations from Manila are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options can often be found for around PHP 2,000 to PHP 4,000 for a round trip if booked in advance.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby Visayas provinces, bus services are available. Buses typically depart from major terminals in Manila and other cities, offering a more economical but significantly longer journey. The trip can take upwards of 20 hours, often involving a ferry crossing. Bus fares usually range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500 for a one-way ticket. This option is best suited for travelers with ample time and a preference for scenic, albeit lengthy, overland travel.

Driving to Tacloban City is possible for those coming from other parts of Leyte or nearby islands accessible by ferry. The journey involves navigating national highways and potentially ferry services. While specific toll costs vary greatly depending on the starting point, the primary consideration for driving is the extensive travel time and the need for careful planning regarding routes and rest stops. For most travelers from Luzon or Mindanao, flying remains the most practical choice.

Best Time to Visit Tacloban City

The best time to visit Tacloban City generally falls within the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect more sunshine and less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, sightseeing, and exploring the historical sites. The weather is usually warm and humid, typical of the Philippine climate, so light clothing and sun protection are recommended.

The period from June to October often brings more frequent rainfall and the possibility of typhoons, given Tacloban's location. While it is possible to visit during these months, especially if you are looking for fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, be prepared for potential disruptions to travel plans due to weather. For a comfortable and predictable travel experience, aiming for the dry season is advisable.

Food and Dining Near Tacloban City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Tacloban, be sure to sample some of the local Eastern Visayan delicacies. One must-try is **Kinilaw**, a Filipino version of ceviche, where fresh raw fish is cured in vinegar, often with ginger, onions, and chili. Tacloban’s coastal location means you’ll find incredibly fresh seafood prepared in this refreshing style. Look for restaurants serving local specialties for the most authentic preparations.

Another regional favorite is **Binagol**, a sweet delicacy made from taro (gabi), coconut milk, sugar, and peanuts, traditionally steamed inside a banana leaf and served in a coconut shell. Its rich, earthy flavor and unique texture make it a distinctive dessert or snack. Many local eateries and markets will offer this treat, providing a taste of traditional Leyteano cuisine.

Don't leave Tacloban without trying **Sutukil**, which is a cooking method rather than a specific dish. It stands for Sugba (grill), Tuwa (stew), and Kilaw (ceviche). Many restaurants offer a Sutukil experience where you can choose your fresh seafood and have it prepared in these three distinct styles. This allows you to savor the versatility of local catches.

For those who enjoy spicy food, **Adobong Puti** (White Adobo) is a local variation of the classic Filipino adobo, prepared without soy sauce, relying instead on vinegar, garlic, and salt. It offers a tangier, sharper flavor profile. You can find excellent versions of these dishes in local carinderias and restaurants throughout Tacloban City, offering an authentic taste of the region.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Tacloban City

Tacloban City is known for the warmth and resilience of its people. Filipinos are generally hospitable, and a polite greeting like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) in Waray, the local dialect, will be appreciated. When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dressing modestly is recommended out of respect. Be mindful of local customs and traditions, especially during festivals or religious events.

Safety in Tacloban City is generally comparable to other urban centers in the Philippines. It's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911, and it's good to have the number for your hotel's front desk readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around the city and finding your way to attractions and restaurants. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are also available in Tacloban and can be a convenient way to book transportation. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger to stay in touch.

Familiarize yourself with basic Waray phrases if possible, though English and Tagalog are widely understood, especially in tourist areas and hotels. Understanding local etiquette, such as removing your shoes before entering someone's home, is a sign of respect. Being prepared with these cultural insights and practical tools will make your visit to Tacloban City smoother and more enjoyable.

The hotel is in great location it only take 15-20 minutes to the airport by jeep. It's along the street so its very easy to commute. The room is basic but clean and spacious. They also serve 'eat all you can breakfast' for only P199. Close to a public park where you can have a run or a morning walk. They have a swimming pool for kids and adults which I like. I recommend the place for everyone, it's okay just a basic place for its affordable price. Good.

Booked a room online. When I got there, room is unavailable and they let me upgrade room and pay additional. I don't have a choice as I already paid the room and I really want to get to bed and rest. The room is old, dirty, rusty, and not worth the price.

I booked for the standard room, when I arrived there, no available room daw. So they require me to add money to avail other available rooms. So disgusting! Then they don’t have keys given to the costumer. You have to go first on the frontdesk for an assistance when you want to go back on your room.

While the location is good, and the staff are greeting us always, the problem is that we hears horesplaying and noisy conversations on the hallway from the staff. Our room was located the end of the hallway near to the kitchen and the noise was unbearable to the point that I have to go out of the room and tell them to stop the shouting. They have this 190 pesos breakfast buffet which is cheap if there is enough choices but there is few, swimming is until 9pm.

The hotel had a nice location but what was disappointing was we inquired ahead of time that we will be extending our stay and they told us that we could extend once we are at the hotel. Unfortunately, when we were there already they told us we can't extend a day more because they are fully booked. They should not mislead their clients because we are willing to pay had they informed us properly. Their front desk personnel also kept on asking if the room was paid already and to think i gave a printed receipt. There was no initiative on their part to read the print-out given.

Yes very basic. Picture shown wasn't the actual room, it was more basic. We booked matrimonial room but to our surprise it was actually a regular air-con room. Very different from the photo. I believe the one shown is the pricier room. So, be wary before booking. Also, key cards doesn't work. Keys weren't provided so we have to ask assistance before going in.

The receptionist in this hotel is not so friendly. And they have poor WiFi connection.

The room was unprepared when they handed me over the key. The trash bin still has the trash from the previous occupants as well as the used towel, the bed sheet and the pillow cases.

WiFi service was not good. There was no toiletries, no coffee or tea maker, hot water also chargeable. No blankets, room service every after 2 days only.

Yong staff who are front liners who are booking a booking may not be able to get a ticket through traveloka or online should be 3 days ahead because he said they have been coming in for a long time before they prioritize online booking. I wish it had never been tied up with online bookings. The taray pa

I reserved and booked online but I was dismayed when we arrived, the room that was supposed to be ours was given to a walk in client..what was instead given to us was a room that’s comparable to a cheap hospital room with the CR smelling so bad...will not have another try on this hotel ever!

Good.

I don't recommend staying in this hotel! The faucet in their bathrooms are leaking. The sink is clogged the aircon is broken. They had us pay for additional fee so we can use their family room since they overbooked!!! Not a hotel type of service. No courtesy. Very Basic indeed.

Though the room was not exactly the one we expect from what we've seen in the pictures, but the service is great, and the staffs are very accommodating, and our stay was very satisfying..

Hotel room size was okay, but there is no internet connection in the room. You need to go to the hotel lobby (front desk) if you wish to use internet.

The room is old and under renovation, noisy, water is very slow. The blanket is only a small and thin and charge more 50 peso if you want another one. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone.

I booked online a family room but not available when I arrived. Replaced with a matrimonial room. I complain instead I got 2 matrimonial room. Thanks but the room was dirty, trash on the bathroom, intercom broken, no wifi, no coffee/tea maker, towels wet, and no water in the morning.
