Your Travel Guide to Catarman as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Catarman from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Catarman from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Flights typically land at Camiguin Airport (USU). From Manila, you can find flights to Camiguin, often with a layover in Cebu or Cagayan de Oro. The total travel time, including layovers, can range from 4 to 7 hours. Booking your flight tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons, is highly recommended to secure the best fares, which can vary significantly.

For travelers coming from Mindanao, particularly Cagayan de Oro, you can take a ferry to Camiguin. The ferry journey from Cagayan de Oro to Benoni Port in Camiguin takes approximately 2 to 3 hours. From Benoni Port, you will then need to take land transportation, such as a bus or a van, to reach Catarman. This option is often more budget-friendly than flying, with ferry fares typically ranging from PHP 500 to PHP 800.

If you are already on Camiguin Island and traveling from another municipality, local buses and jeepneys are available to take you to Catarman. Tricycles and motorcycle taxis are also readily available for shorter distances or for direct transport to your accommodation. For those who prefer the freedom of exploring at their own pace, renting a motorbike is a popular option on the island, with rental rates usually around PHP 500-700 per day.

Best Time to Visit Catarman

Camiguin Island, including Catarman, enjoys a tropical climate year-round. The best time to visit is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, and exploring the island's natural attractions. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 32°C.

The wet season occurs from June to October, characterized by more frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, outdoor activities could be affected by the weather. However, even during the rainy season, the showers are often intermittent, and you can still enjoy many of the island's attractions. For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or May.

Food and Dining Near Catarman — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Catarman, be sure to sample some of Camiguin's local culinary delights. A must-try is the Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, often made with fresh, locally caught fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find delicious Kinilaw at local eateries and carinderias around Catarman.

Another local specialty is the Pastel, a soft, sweet bun filled with yema (custard). These are incredibly popular and make for a perfect snack or dessert. They are widely available in bakeries and souvenir shops across the island, including in Catarman. Many travelers buy boxes of Pastel to take home as pasalubong (souvenirs).

Don't leave Camiguin without trying the local lanzones when they are in season (typically around September to November). Camiguin is famous for producing some of the sweetest and juiciest lanzones in the Philippines. You'll often find vendors selling them by the roadside or in local markets. The sweet and slightly tart flavor is truly distinctive.

For a more substantial meal, look for dishes featuring fresh seafood, as Camiguin is an island surrounded by rich fishing grounds. Grilled fish, squid, and other marine delicacies are commonly offered. Exploring the local carinderias will give you an authentic taste of Filipino home-style cooking, often featuring dishes like Adobo, Sinigang, and various vegetable preparations.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Catarman

The people of Camiguin are known for their hospitality and strong sense of community. While generally a peaceful island, it's always wise to be mindful of your surroundings, especially in more crowded areas or when traveling alone. Basic safety precautions, such as keeping valuables secure and avoiding dimly lit areas at night, are recommended. The emergency number for the Philippine National Police is typically 911.

When interacting with locals, a friendly demeanor and a smile go a long way. Learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) can be appreciated. Respect local customs and traditions, especially when visiting religious sites or interacting with elders. Camiguin is known for its religious festivals, so be aware of these if your visit coincides with them.

For your travel convenience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation around the island. A translation app can be helpful if you encounter language barriers, though English is widely understood in tourist areas.
