Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila is the most common and efficient method. Major airlines operate frequent flights from key cities like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Cagayan de Oro to Manila. You can easily book your flight on Traveloka, often finding competitive fares, especially if you book in advance. From NAIA, Makati is a relatively short taxi or ride-sharing trip away.

If you're traveling from nearby provinces or prefer land travel, bus services are available, though this will be a significantly longer journey. Buses from Northern Luzon or Southern Luzon will arrive at various terminals in Metro Manila, from where you'll need to take another form of transport to reach Makati. The cost of bus tickets can vary widely depending on the origin and bus company, but generally, it's a more budget-friendly option for those not pressed for time.

Driving to Makati is also an option for those coming from accessible regions. Major expressways connect to Metro Manila, leading you towards the city center. However, be prepared for significant traffic, especially during peak hours. Having a reliable GPS or navigation app is essential. For those flying in, remember to book your flight and then plan your onward journey to Makati from the airport.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, typically from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather for exploring the city. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for walking around, visiting outdoor attractions, and enjoying the city's many offerings without the interruption of heavy rain.

The cooler months within the dry season, from November to February, are particularly comfortable, with temperatures often ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius. This period is considered peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. If you prefer fewer crowds and slightly warmer weather, the latter part of the dry season, from March to April, can still be enjoyable.

The wet season runs from May to October. While this period brings frequent rainfall, it doesn't mean you should avoid visiting. Showers are often heavy but can be short-lived, allowing for plenty of sunshine in between. Traveling during the wet season can mean fewer tourists and potentially better deals on flights and hotels. Just be sure to pack an umbrella or raincoat and be prepared for occasional travel delays due to weather.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary heritage, and Makati offers a fantastic array of dining experiences. You absolutely must try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, slow-cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, its savory and tangy profile is a true Filipino comfort food. Many restaurants in Makati serve excellent versions of this classic.

Another essential dish is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth, but sometimes with other souring agents like guava or calamansi. It's usually filled with meat (pork, beef, or fish) and a variety of vegetables. The comforting warmth and distinct sourness of Sinigang are perfect for any weather and are a staple in Filipino households and restaurants alike.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, Lechon Kawali (crispy fried pork belly) and Inihaw na Liempo (grilled pork belly) are highly recommended. The crispy, golden-brown skin of Lechon Kawali and the smoky, tender meat of Inihaw na Liempo are incredibly satisfying. Pair these with a side of rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce and calamansi for a truly Filipino feast.

Don't forget to sample Pancit, the Filipino noodle dish that comes in countless variations. Whether it's Pancit Canton (stir-fried noodles with meat and vegetables) or Pancit Palabok (rice noodles with a shrimp-based sauce and toppings), each type offers a unique flavor and texture. Exploring the local eateries and food courts in Makati's malls will give you ample opportunity to try these delicious dishes.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang umaga" (Good morning) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Filipinos are generally respectful of elders and authority figures. While Makati is a modern city, understanding basic etiquette, such as dressing modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas, is appreciated.

Safety in Makati is generally good, especially in well-trafficked areas like the central business district and shopping malls. However, like any major city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, avoid displaying expensive items openly, and be cautious of petty theft, particularly in crowded places. Stick to well-lit streets at night and consider using reputable transportation services.

For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also useful to have the contact numbers for your embassy or consulate readily available. Having a local SIM card can be very helpful for communication and accessing online services.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used and offer a convenient way to book transportation. For currency conversion, an app like XE Currency can be useful. Finally, having the Traveloka app on your phone will allow you to manage your bookings and discover local attractions and dining options easily.

Room didn't look like the picture. Kitchen cabinets held together with packing tape. Mold on kitchen sink. Cockroaches running around bathroom. Wallpaper on windows. AC and bathroom fans sounded like airplane engine. So dirty I slept in my clothes and didn't take shower. Left the next day even though I had paid for six days.

I chose this place thinking it was close to the places my Asawa would be needing to go for exams and interviews. I was very wrong. The owner/caretaker seems to be a good man and was very helpful. He was very quick to reply on most things I asked/inquired about, and very helpful in taking care of my Asawa. Thank you for that Sir Henry! As it turns out, this is a "RED LIGHT" district and many prostitutes (women & men) everywhere. My wife did not tell me how bad it was until she was back in the safety of our own home.....HAI NAKO!!! The room (kitchen) was not quite as represented when booking, yet again the owner/keeper was very good and helpful, and there is a guard at the door that was also helpful and kind. I would say not good for family or single lady on travel, yet great for single man looking for fun.
