What Guests Say About Their Stay

Daniel

The staff here is super nice. This hotel is located in the Chinatown neighborhood of Manilla and is an area with some folks who are struggling financially. So if you stay here you will be contributing to a neighborhood that needs the support of good people. It is not dangerous at all. I actually want to see this side of a city and see what folks are really dealing with. I saw aspects of Manila here that I would not have seen had I stayed elsewhere. From this hotel you can walk to the fine museums Manila has - the art museum is really spectacular. You can also walk to the huge park and see the old Spanish fortifications. The room I had was large, and it had a nice bed and air conditioning. I actually caught a little cold or something and spent a couple days in bed and I enjoyed it - lying in the dark, recouperating with the AC on etc. :P If you are on a budget, this room will be fine for you. Good staff, clean, safe room, air conditioning, TV...walking distance to cool stuff.

Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Manila is often the most efficient option. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the origin city and how far in advance you book flight tickets. Travel time from key cities like Cebu or Davao is typically around 1 to 1.5 hours.

If you prefer land travel, buses are a common and budget-friendly choice for reaching Manila from Luzon's major provinces. Terminals like Cubao and Pasay are central hubs. Bus fares generally range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 for longer routes. Travel time can vary significantly, from 6 hours for Baguio to over 12 hours for destinations further north or south.

Driving to Manila offers flexibility, especially for those coming from nearby provinces. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to the city. Be prepared for toll fees, which can add up, and factor in potential traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, making it pleasant for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and historical sites. Temperatures are generally warm, averaging around 28-32 degrees Celsius.

The cooler months between November and February are particularly comfortable, with slightly lower humidity. This period is also popular for festivals and holiday celebrations. Conversely, the wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers and typhoons, which can disrupt travel plans and outdoor activities. While it might offer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, the unpredictable weather is a significant consideration.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its diverse culinary landscape. A must-try is Adobo, the unofficial national dish, featuring meat (usually chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. You can find excellent versions in traditional eateries and even modern restaurants across the city.

Another Filipino favorite is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat or seafood, along with various vegetables. Its comforting tanginess is perfect for any weather. For a taste of street food culture, try Balut, a fertilized duck embryo, which is an acquired taste but a true Filipino delicacy.

For those seeking something sweet, Halo-halo is the ultimate Filipino dessert. This refreshing concoction is a mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down on a warm Manila day. Exploring the food stalls and restaurants in Binondo itself will offer authentic Chinese-Filipino flavors.

Consider trying La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo, which has found its way into Manila’s culinary scene. It’s a rich broth filled with noodles, pork, shrimp, and vegetables. For a more substantial meal, Kare-Kare, a rich stew made with oxtail and vegetables in a thick peanut sauce, served with bagoong (shrimp paste), is a classic that showcases Filipino comfort food.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. Greetings are important; a simple "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) goes a long way. When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dress modestly out of respect. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

When it comes to safety in Manila, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of petty theft. It’s advisable to use reputable transportation services like taxis hailed from official stands or ride-sharing apps. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911.

Essential apps for navigating Manila include Google Maps for navigation, Grab for transportation and food delivery, and a reliable currency converter. Having a local SIM card can also be very helpful for staying connected and accessing data services easily. Familiarizing yourself with basic Tagalog phrases can also enhance your interactions.

This was our second stay, stayed there about a month ago for two days. This is a budget hotel, for the money you pay it is fine, hot water in the shower, air con works, it is safe and quite for downtown China town Manila. The hotel is old of course, so some things are dated and worn. But it is clean, cheap, friendly staff, your deposit gets returned, for the money you cannot go wrong staying here. Decent mattresses, towels, clean sheets, so over look a missing toilet seat, you are saving money! Not going to get first class accommodations for the $30.00 a night for three guests! Will stay again if in the area, can't give a higher praise than that.

The downside we observed during our 6 day stay is that the smell like someone is cooking at night from the groundfloor reaches in our room.

The street was flooded. It was difficult to go there. The room is old and dingy so I decided not to stay. The lady at the reception was very jolly though.

The hotel is so old and rundown. The people on the reception are very friendly, and the location is good for food options. Room was so dusty, rats running around the corridors, so noisy, no daylight, just very old and run down. The bed was OK, bathroom was old and dirty. Just not the best.

The price of room is within our budget. The location is very strategic and well-known hotel. The staff is very helpful and easy to approach. The room is clean.. The guard is helpful. The downside we observed during our 6 day stay is that the smell like someone is cooking at night from the groundfloor reaches in our room.
