Your Travel Guide to Davao City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Davao City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to travel to Davao City from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) serves Davao City. Several airlines operate daily flights, with travel times typically around 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. Flight prices can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but you can often find round-trip fares ranging from PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 for economy class. Booking your flight early is recommended.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby Mindanao cities, bus services are available. Buses offer a more economical option, with fares generally ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000 for a one-way trip from Manila, though this is a very long journey of over 24 hours. From cities within Mindanao, bus travel is much shorter and more affordable, with prices typically between PHP 500 to PHP 1,500 depending on the origin city. These buses usually arrive at the various bus terminals in Davao City.

Driving to Davao City is also an option for adventurous travelers, particularly those coming from other parts of Mindanao. The Pan-Philippine Highway connects Davao City to various points in Luzon and Visayas, though this involves multiple ferry crossings if coming from Luzon or the Visayas. The journey is extensive and requires careful planning. Toll fees and fuel costs should be factored into your budget. For most travelers, especially those coming from distant locations, flying remains the most practical choice.

Best Time to Visit Davao City

Davao City enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with temperatures generally ranging between 26°C and 31°C. The city does not experience a distinct dry or wet season in the same way as some other parts of the Philippines, as it is located outside the typhoon belt. However, there is a period of increased rainfall typically from June to October. For travelers who prefer drier weather for outdoor activities, the months from November to May are generally considered the best time to visit.

The peak tourist season usually coincides with major holidays and festivals, such as Christmas and the Kadayawan Festival in August. During these times, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially better deals on flights and hotels, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as February to May or November. Regardless of when you visit, Davao City offers a welcoming experience for Filipino travelers.

Food and Dining Near Davao City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Davao is complete without sampling its unique culinary offerings. One must-try is the Durian, the "King of Fruits," known for its pungent aroma and creamy, custard-like texture. While polarizing, its distinct flavor is an experience in itself. You can find fresh durian in local markets and fruit stands, especially during its peak season from August to October. Many local eateries also offer durian-flavored pastries and ice cream.

Another local delicacy to savor is the Kinilaw na Malasugi, Davao's version of ceviche, typically made with fresh swordfish or tuna. The fish is "cooked" in vinegar, usually coconut vinegar, and mixed with ginger, onions, chili, and sometimes coconut milk for a creamy finish. It's a refreshing and flavorful dish, perfect as an appetizer or a light meal, and can be found in many seafood restaurants across the city.

For those who enjoy grilled dishes, try the Grilled Tuna Jaw. Davao is known for its abundant tuna supply, and grilling the jaw is a popular way to prepare it. The meat is tender and flavorful, often marinated and grilled to perfection. It’s a hearty dish that showcases the freshness of local seafood and is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Many seaside restaurants offer this specialty.

Don't forget to try the local coffee. Davao is a significant coffee-producing region in the Philippines. You can find various local coffee shops serving freshly brewed coffee made from locally sourced beans. Enjoying a cup of Davao coffee is a simple yet authentic way to connect with the local culture and flavors. It’s the perfect way to start your day or take a break during your explorations.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Davao City

Davao City is known for its generally peaceful environment and friendly locals. The culture is a blend of indigenous traditions and modern influences. When interacting with locals, politeness and respect are always appreciated. It's common to greet elders with "po" and "opo." While English and Tagalog are widely understood, learning a few basic phrases in Bisaya, the local dialect, can be helpful and endearing.

Safety is a priority in Davao City. It is considered one of the safest major cities in the Philippines. However, it's always wise to exercise standard precautions: be aware of your surroundings, avoid displaying expensive items openly, and keep your valuables secure. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night. In case of emergencies, the general emergency number is 911, which covers police, fire, and medical services.

For a smoother travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A ride-sharing app like Grab is very useful for getting around the city, offering convenience and transparent pricing for your transportation needs. You can also use navigation apps like Google Maps to help you find your way around Davao. For communication, ensure you have a reliable messaging app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.

Additionally, having the Traveloka app on your phone is highly recommended. It allows you to easily search for and book hotels, flights, and attractions, all in one place. This can be particularly helpful for spontaneous travel plans or when looking for last-minute deals. Having these tools readily available will enhance your comfort and efficiency during your stay in Davao City.

Its okay to sleep in, bathroom needed a little maintenance, clogged showerhead and broken tub drain. Other than that, the room was quaint. The air conditioning was strong, but the big issue is the wifi. I was staying for business, and I had to use mobile data because none of my devices could connect to their wifi whichhad very little signal in my room. Breakfast wasn’t remarkable, buffet, but they hardly refilled the food, so there are limited choices if you eat late.

I got the twin room & stayed there for 4 nights. For the room's rate, I expected quality service. We asked for daily housekeeping. The beds were made up & the room smelled nice but the floor is dusty. The sink is leaking. The tub/shower area had small flying bugs. & we had to call the reception everytime to ask for bath towels bcoz the housekeeper always forget to leave clean towels in the room. The wifi voucher which is good for 2 days is already invalid the next day & it's not even 24 hrs since we used them. The dining area where they serve the breakfast buffet only have 6 tables. You have to wait for people to finish before you can eat. & they serve a lot of pork dishes & side by side with non-prok dishes which is a bit alarming for muslims like me. Some insensitive guests used the same serving spoon for ham on scrambled eggs. They only have 1 crew in the resto who takes the dishes out, replenishes food & takes your orders. So food replenishment is quite slow. Kudos to her though bcoz despite being so busy she gave us a fresh batch of scrambled eggs when I told her about my serving spoon dilemma. & she's very polite. Props also to the security guards who are also very polite, helpful & always greeted us with a smile no matter what time of day (or night) it is. Also, I like the native chocolate they serve. This hotel should consider hiring a few more people for faster & better service. Another hotel has better service for the same price. Too bad that one's fullybooked.

Our stay at Blueberry almost near perfect.. cleanliness room was poor there is leftover cobwebs in cabinet, small cockroach in the bathtub, lots of moths in the bathroom... room is for small family not too spacious... requesting for additional 1 or 2 pillows and towels only require additional charges which other big or medium (like Infinity Suites) hotels willing to accommodate for minor request with no additional charges... No bellboy or person that can help assist a customer with many bagages or bags...

I booked on the same day (around 11am) as my stay for 3 nights in a deluxe queen room through the Hotels.com app. I got there around 5pm for check-in but there were no more deluxe queen rooms available and they did not have my reservation. They only checked the system when I arrived and saw that I did place a booking through the app. Already fully paid through the App, I knew that it would be hard to get a refund. Since all the deluxe queen were sold out they could only give me a regular room with 2 twin beds. A downgrade since I paid for a deluxe but they only gave me a standard. The rooms were a bit dated but for the price. It did come with free breakfast which was alright and they change the menu daily. Tip(FOR THIS HOTEL ONLY): Book through the hotel instead of the app, its cheaper since they have promos for walk in guest.

Fint hotel, hvis man ikke ønsker luksus. Morgenmaden som er gratis er rigtig dårlig, men ellers er hotellet fint og personalet er rigtig søde

Arrived at Hotel late at night, confirmed booking and paid booking for two rooms, at hotel only one room was providing to us and no other room was available, hotel was fully booked and cannot accomodate us and staff cannot do anything to give us a place to stay late at night, unforgettable and horrible experience, shuttle to airport was also advertised and they did not provide either, beware of their false advertisements

The staff was on the guess computer all of the time and the wifi did not work in the rooms and the breakfast was awfull the food was cold and poor quality. the tv and the music from the speakers in the ceiling were so loud you could hardly take to anybody and the staff was walking around singing to them selfes. I got lock out of my room and missed a meeting because the batteries went dead in the door lock and the maintance man had to use a butter knife to take out the screws of the battery holder.
