This guide is tailored for Filipino travelers, providing practical advice on transportation, the best times to visit, local culinary delights, and essential tips for navigating this popular Bohol destination.

How to Get to Panglao, Panglao Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers originating from Manila, the most efficient way to reach Panglao, Panglao Island is by air. Several airlines, including Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia, operate daily flights from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to the Bohol Panglao International Airport (TAG). Flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect to pay anywhere from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 or more for a round trip ticket. Booking your flight through Traveloka can help you find competitive prices and compare options easily. Upon arrival at TAG, Bohol Sunside Resort is conveniently located just over 1 kilometer away, making your transfer quick and affordable via taxi or tricycle.

If you’re coming from Cebu City, you also have the option of flying directly to Bohol Panglao International Airport (TAG). Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines typically service this route, with flights lasting around 1 hour. This is often a very convenient option for those already in the Visayas region. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Cebu City to Tagbilaran City, Bohol’s capital. Several ferry operators, such as OceanJet and SuperCat, run daily trips.

The ferry journey takes approximately 2 hours and costs around PHP 800-1,500 for a one-way ticket. From Tagbilaran City port, you would then need to take a taxi or bus to Panglao Island, which is about a 45-minute to 1-hour drive.

For travelers in Mindanao, particularly Davao City, flying is the most practical option. Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific often have flights connecting Davao International Airport (DVO) to Bohol Panglao International Airport (TAG). The flight duration is typically around 1 hour and 30 minutes. While direct flights might not be as frequent as from Manila or Cebu, connecting flights are usually available.

If you are traveling overland from other parts of Mindanao to reach a ferry port like Cagayan de Oro or Zamboanga, you would then need to take a ferry to Tagbilaran City, which is a much longer and more complex journey. For most, booking a flight directly to TAG is the recommended and most time-efficient method.

Best Time to Visit Panglao, Panglao Island

Panglao Island, Bohol, enjoys a tropical climate, which means it’s generally warm and humid throughout the year. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking sunny skies and calm seas is during the dry season, which typically runs from December to May. Within this period, the months of March to May are often the hottest, offering ideal conditions for beach activities, swimming, and water sports.

The seas are usually calmer, making island hopping tours and diving excursions more pleasant. This is also considered peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights.

The wet season in Panglao generally spans from June to November. During these months, you can expect more frequent rainfall, which can range from short, intense downpours to longer periods of rain. While the rain can sometimes disrupt outdoor plans, it also brings lush greenery to the island and often means fewer tourists and lower prices for accommodations.

Traveling during the shoulder months, such as June or November, can offer a good balance, with potentially fewer crowds than the peak season but still a reasonable chance of good weather. Typhoons are possible during this period, though Panglao is generally less affected than some other parts of the Philippines. For travelers who prefer a more laid-back atmosphere and are not deterred by occasional rain, the wet season can be a great time to visit.

For a truly optimal experience, aiming for the period between December and February is often recommended. This time falls within the dry season but tends to be slightly cooler and less humid than the peak summer months of March to May. The weather is typically sunny with gentle breezes, perfect for exploring the beaches like Alona Beach and enjoying the numerous water activities Bohol is famous for.

While this is a popular time to visit, booking your accommodation and flights in advance, especially if you plan to book hotel stays, can help secure better rates and ensure availability.

The smoky char from the grill, combined with a squeeze of calamansi and a dip in soy sauce with chili and onions, is a simple yet deeply satisfying experience.

Another local delicacy worth seeking out is Kinilaw na Tangigue, Bohol's version of ceviche. Unlike some other regional variations, Boholano kinilaw often features a generous amount of ginger, onions, and chili, with vinegar providing a sharp, refreshing tang. Many local eateries and even some higher-end restaurants will offer their own take on this classic Filipino appetizer.

For those with a sweet tooth, try the local delicacies made from peanuts. Bohol is known for its peanut kisses, a crunchy, heart-shaped cookie that’s a popular pasalubong (souvenir). While not a meal, these are a delightful snack to enjoy with coffee or as a sweet treat. You can find these in local souvenir shops and even some bakeries.

Another sweet treat to look for are various types of local pastries and cakes, often found in small bakeries in Panglao town or Tagbilaran.

For a truly local experience, venture into smaller carinderias (local eateries) where you can find home-style cooking at very affordable prices.

These places often serve a variety of dishes buffet-style, allowing you to pick and choose what you’d like to eat. Exploring these local spots offers an authentic taste of Filipino cuisine in the heart of Bohol.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Panglao, Panglao Island

When visiting churches or more traditional areas, dressing modestly is appreciated. Bargaining is common in markets and with tricycle drivers, but always do so respectfully and with a smile.

Safety in Panglao is generally good, especially in tourist areas. However, like any travel destination, it’s wise to take standard precautions. For communication, apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used by Filipinos. If you plan on booking local tours or activities on the go, the Traveloka app is your go-to for finding and booking attractions, as well as managing your hotel and flight bookings.

Very nice location. The rooms are basic but big. The aircon is old and too loud. You can rent a scooter there, which is necessary to get around. Alona Beach is 5 minutes away with scooter. The wifi is slow sometime. The mattress is bad in the room. The staff is nice and helpful. The pool is nice.

Things we like: the room is very spacious-we booked Family Room good for 4 pax. Resort has a nice ambiance because it is close to nature. Accessible. Quiet. Fresh Air. Pool is clean. Staff are averagely friendly. The things I do not like are: They don't have complimentary bottled waters (only in apartment & studio type rooms). No electric kettle. Hair Blower isn't working. They did not replenish soap & shampoos when we ask for room make up. Overall our stay was good because we sleep well during our stay. We were on tour during day time. We only stayed there to rest & sleep after a tiring day. Thank you.
