How to Get to Tagbilaran City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Tagbilaran City is by air. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate daily flights from Manila (MNL) to Tagbilaran Airport (TAG). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares varying but often ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for round trips, depending on booking time and promotions. Booking your flight early is recommended.

For those preferring land and sea travel, you can take a bus from major terminals in Manila (like Cubao or Pasay) to various ports in Mindanao, such as Cagayan de Oro or Cebu. From these cities, you can then catch a ferry to Tagbilaran City. Bus fares can range from PHP 1,000 to PHP 2,000, and ferry tickets from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500. This option is significantly longer, often taking over 24 hours, but can be more budget-friendly.

Driving to Tagbilaran City is a long journey involving ferry crossings. If you are coming from Luzon or Visayas, you would typically drive to a port city like Batangas or Cebu, take a roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ferry to Bohol, and then drive to Tagbilaran. This route is best for those who enjoy road trips and have ample time, with costs varying greatly depending on fuel and ferry charges.

Best Time to Visit Tagbilaran City

The dry season, from December to May, is generally considered the best time to visit Tagbilaran City and Bohol. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, which are ideal for island hopping, beach activities, and exploring the province's natural attractions like the Chocolate Hills and Panglao Island's beaches. Temperatures are warm, averaging around 30-32°C.

The wet season runs from June to November, characterized by occasional rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it's advisable to pack rain gear and be prepared for possible disruptions to outdoor activities. The shoulder months of December and May often offer a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

Food and Dining Near Tagbilaran City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Bohol is complete without trying Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh, locally caught fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili, offering a zesty and refreshing appetizer. Many local eateries in Tagbilaran serve excellent Kinilaw, often made with the catch of the day. Look for small carinderias near the market for authentic preparations.

Another must-try is Peanut Kisses, a crunchy, heart-shaped delicacy unique to Bohol. These sweet treats are made from ground peanuts and sugar, baked until crisp. They make for a perfect pasalubong (souvenir) and are readily available in souvenir shops and bakeries around Tagbilaran City. They pair wonderfully with coffee.

For a taste of local seafood, try grilled or steamed fish and squid. Bohol's coastal location means fresh seafood is abundant. Many restaurants along the coast or in Tagbilaran's city center offer a variety of preparations. Enjoying a meal with a view of the sea is a popular dining experience for many visitors.

Don't forget to sample Boholano-style Adobo. While Adobo is a national dish, each region has its own twist. Boholano versions often incorporate local ingredients and spices, offering a distinct flavor profile. Ask locals for recommendations on the best places to try this regional specialty.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Tagbilaran City

Boholanos are known for their hospitality and strong sense of community. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. Respect local customs, especially when visiting churches or attending local events. It's common to dress modestly when visiting religious sites.

Tagbilaran City is generally a safe place for travelers. However, like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or public transport. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the local police hotline is usually 911.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. Ride-hailing apps or local transport apps can be useful for getting around the city. A translation app might be helpful if you plan to venture into more remote areas, though English is widely understood in tourist spots.

Familiarize yourself with basic Filipino phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Magandang umaga" (Good morning). While English is widely spoken, making an effort to use local greetings is always appreciated and can enhance your interactions with the friendly locals of Bohol.

For a three star hotel it was very good, but it wouldn’t rate any higher than that at this stage. Interior is quite tired with a no. of fittings falling off. We were provided with one bath towel each and when prompted as to no face washer or hand towel we were advised “would provide if requested” Buffet breakfast was very poor with hastily provided fried eggs, powdered orange juice etc…. Will not return at this stage.

The only thing that was bothering us a bit was the big cockroach in the room, which I think is typical for a tropical island.

Located within the city, the resort is a perfect place for families with kids like us and we stayed for 12 days straight. It is an expansive property with 3 pools that gave us choice of where and when we go for a swim. The property is gated and secured. My 2 kids on another room could walk around safely around the property. The food is good and the daily night time entertainment is fantastic. The staff are also friendly. This place is a good base to explore the island province of Bohol. I recommend this place.

My whole family had a nice stay for 3 days we swimming in the pool though the lady who answered my call when I enquired if we can use the pool while waiting for the check in time was rude. Just said no and hang up! Limited option on intercontinental breakfast especially if you don’t eat pork.

We have stayed there many times. It is safe convenient to the main city and the staff are helpful. The food is okay.

The sea view from our room’s balcony was amazing; breakfast was varied everyday and delicious; staff is super supportive and responsive; conveniently located and lastly, the place is relaxing and overall homey. The only thing that was bothering us a bit was the big cockroach in the room, which I think is typical for a tropical island.
