Your Travel Guide to General Luna, Siargao Islands as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to General Luna, Siargao Islands from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

The most convenient way to reach Siargao Islands from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Siargao Airport (IAO), also known as Sayak Airport. Flight durations typically range from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on whether you have a direct flight or a layover. Fares can vary significantly, but booking in advance, especially through platforms like Traveloka, can help secure cheaper tickets. Expect prices to range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and booking time.

For travelers looking for a more budget-friendly, albeit significantly longer, option, traveling by land and sea is possible. This usually involves taking a bus from major cities like Manila or Cebu to Surigao City. Bus journeys can take anywhere from 18 to 30 hours, with fares typically ranging from PHP 1,500 to PHP 3,000. From Surigao City, you would then take a ferry to General Luna, Siargao. Ferry trips usually last about 4 to 5 hours and cost around PHP 300-500. This method requires careful planning and a considerable amount of travel time.

For those who prefer to drive their own vehicle or rent one, the journey involves a combination of driving and ferry travel. You would drive to Surigao City and then take your vehicle on a RORO (Roll-on/Roll-off) ferry to Siargao. This option offers the most flexibility once you are on the island, allowing you to explore at your own pace.

However, it is the most time-consuming and potentially costly option when factoring in fuel, ferry fees for the vehicle, and accommodation along the way. It is highly recommended to book your flight to Siargao well in advance to ensure a smooth trip.

Best Time to Visit General Luna, Siargao Islands

The ideal time to visit General Luna, Siargao Islands, for most travelers, especially surfers, is during the dry season, which runs from March to October. Within this period, the months of September and October are often considered prime time for surfing due to the consistent swells. The weather during these months is generally sunny with lower chances of rain, making it perfect for outdoor activities like island hopping, swimming, and exploring the beaches.

For those who prefer calmer seas and less crowded spots, the shoulder months of March to May can be particularly pleasant. The weather is still good, and you might find slightly lower prices for accommodation and flights compared to the peak season. This period offers a good balance of favorable weather and a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing you to enjoy Siargao's beauty without the peak season crowds.

It's important to note that Siargao experiences a wet season from November to February. While surfing can still be good during this time, especially for experienced surfers seeking bigger waves, the weather can be unpredictable with frequent rain showers and occasional typhoons. Island hopping tours might be canceled due to rough seas. If your primary goal is not surfing and you are looking for the most stable weather, it's best to avoid this period.

Food and Dining Near General Luna, Siargao Islands — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in General Luna, Siargao Islands, you must indulge in Kinilaw, a Filipino ceviche made with fresh raw fish (often tuna or tanigue) marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. You'll find excellent versions in many local eateries and restaurants lining the coast, offering a tangy and zesty start to any meal.

Another local favorite that you should not miss is Grilled Liempo, or pork belly. Marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, calamansi, garlic, and pepper, then grilled to perfection over charcoal, it offers a smoky, savory, and slightly sweet flavor profile. Many carinderias and restaurants in General Luna serve this popular dish, often accompanied by a side of rice and a dipping sauce.

For those seeking a taste of the sea, fresh Grilled Seafood is a staple. From succulent prawns and squid to various types of fish caught daily, the options are abundant. Many beachfront restaurants offer a "catch of the day" selection, allowing you to choose your seafood and have it grilled to your preference. It’s a simple yet delicious way to savor the ocean’s offerings.

Don't leave Siargao without trying Halo-Halo, the ultimate Filipino dessert. This iconic treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down after a day under the sun and offers a burst of sweet, creamy, and refreshing flavors that are uniquely Filipino.

The resort was nice. Room is exactly the same with the photos on the site. Though the service are so so. I was not informed that I can already check-in to my designated room since it is already vacated. Nonetheless, the food was delicious and so is the ambiance. Overall, I would rate my stay as 4.3/5.0. Definitely be goin’ back here for sure!

Disappointed staying here during our recent trip to Siargao. A room costs Php3,600 per night. For a room at a hefty price, this place should be worth it. But it wasn't. The water in the shower and faucet is smelly. It smells like sewage. No bathroom amenities available. Room rate also includes breakfast. Breakfast is available from 7:30am to 10:30am. We had an early flight back to Cebu so we asked one of the staff members if we can get our breakfast earlier. They told us that we can ask for it in the evening and they can give it to us before the kitchen closes. But when we asked for it in the evening, the manager told us that they don't allow it. The restaurant was busy and because they had some issues before. There's no coordination within the staff members. I hope the resort could be more accommodating to guests request. If they had an issue before, I think it needs to be resolved without compromising guests comfort and conveniences.

One of the best hostel I've seen, well designed, the place is comfy and the staff is friendly. A bit expensive for hostel type but it was worth it. I recommend this place if you want just to stay at the hostel whole day because it is great for that. I'd come back again for sure.

I had a problem with other guests in dorm rooms but the staff was sympathetic to it. Overall, I still enjoyed my stay!

Great service from the staff. Great breakfast option. Great ambiance. However, AC is quite hard to operate and the water in room 3 smells so bad!

Bravo has the best restaurant staff. Gemma is just a ball of energy. The place has a chill vibe to it so all you want to do is relax after a day of surfing.

Nice theme design, very beach vacation. Good WiFi in common areas. Comfy bed. Very friendly staff and other people. They also help arrange tours, all you have to do is enjoy and pay after. Parties at night are awesome. Nice ambiance. I will definitely go back here.

One of the best hostel I've seen, well designed, the place is comfy and the staff is friendly. A bit expensive for hostel type but it was worth it. I recommend this place if you want just to stay at the hostel whole day because it is great for that. I'd come back again for sure.

Resort is new and loved that it designed to be environment-friendly and energy-saving. Location is great as it is near other food establishments in case you get tired of their food, which I must say is good although a bit pricey.

The room has AC but it's still hot. Meal are expensive. Housekeeping doesn't clean well. But, their restaurant staff are friendly and accommodating.
