Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer frequent flights to Manila from various provincial capitals. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the origin city, airline, and booking time. From NAIA, you can take a taxi, a ride-sharing service, or the airport bus to reach Makati, a journey that typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on traffic. You can book flight tickets conveniently through Traveloka.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces in Luzon, bus travel is a viable and economical option. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila, such as those in Cubao or Pasay, serve routes to Makati. Bus fares are generally affordable, ranging from PHP 400 to PHP 800, and travel times can vary significantly from 4 to 10 hours depending on the starting point and road conditions. This option is best suited for those who prefer a more scenic route or are traveling on a tighter budget.

Driving to Makati is also an option for those coming from accessible regions in Luzon. Major expressways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to Metro Manila. Toll fees will apply, typically ranging from PHP 200 to PHP 500 for the entire journey, depending on your starting point. Navigating within Makati itself requires familiarity with its grid system and traffic rules.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it more comfortable for exploring the city's attractions and enjoying outdoor activities. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 35°C.

The cooler months between November and February are particularly pleasant, with slightly lower temperatures and less intense heat. This period coincides with the holiday season, so expect more crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. The hot season, from March to May, can be quite intense, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C, so staying hydrated and seeking air-conditioned spaces is crucial if you visit during this time. The rainy season, from June to October, brings frequent downpours, which can cause traffic delays and disrupt outdoor plans.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Makati is a culinary hub, offering everything from street food to fine dining. No visit is complete without trying Adobo, the Philippines' unofficial national dish. This savory stew of meat (often chicken or pork) braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a staple in Filipino households. You can find excellent versions in local eateries and even some upscale restaurants around Makati.

Another must-try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth, meat, and an assortment of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. Its comforting, tangy flavor is perfect for any weather. For a taste of grilled perfection, try Inihaw na Liempo (grilled pork belly), marinated and grilled to smoky, succulent perfection. Many carinderias and restaurants in Makati offer these classic Filipino dishes.

For those seeking something a bit more adventurous, Lechon Kawali, deep-fried crispy pork belly, offers a delightful crunch and rich flavor. Pair it with a side of rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce and calamansi. Don't forget to sample Halo-Halo for dessert, a popular Filipino treat made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s a refreshing way to end a meal.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Makati, a polite demeanor and a friendly smile go a long way. While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic Tagalog phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) and "Magandang araw" (Good day) can be appreciated. Respect for elders and public spaces is important.

When it comes to safety, Makati is generally considered one of the safer cities in Metro Manila, especially in its commercial and business districts. However, like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. For emergencies, the local police hotline is 117. It's also useful to have the contact details of your accommodation readily available.

For navigating the city and staying connected, several apps are highly recommended. Grab is essential for booking taxis and ride-sharing services, as well as for food delivery. Google Maps is invaluable for navigation, providing real-time traffic updates. GCash or Maya are useful for mobile payments, making transactions easier for everyday purchases. These tools can significantly enhance your travel experience in Makati.
