Great central location on Malapascua. Very handy to be able to charge food and bar tab to room at Ocean Vida on the beachfront. Breakfast was wonderful too. Only one downside was that the a/c in our sons bedroom was noisy and did not cool the room down. Otherwise a great stay :)

Buena Vida is a beautiful resort. It has a beautiful vibe and very cozy and homey feel. The staff and cleaners all made us feel welcome upon arrival and made sure we felt comfortable and that we were free to ask for anything we needed at any time throughout our stay. We were also able to request a romantic package which is perfect for couples. It includes a spa massage, a private jacuzzi and an intimate dinner for two which is perfect for anniversary celebration. I highly recommend Buena Vida resort if you are planning on making a visit to Malapascua Island. We cant wait to be back.

Your Travel Guide to Daanbantayan as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Daanbantayan from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Daanbantayan from Manila is by air. You can book a flight to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB). Several airlines operate daily flights, with fares typically ranging from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. The flight duration is about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

From Mactan-Cebu International Airport, your journey continues overland to Maya Port in Daanbantayan. You can opt for a public bus from the Cebu North Bus Terminal, which takes approximately 4 to 5 hours and costs around PHP 250 to PHP 350. Alternatively, a private van or car hire offers more comfort and convenience, with prices ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 4,000 for the same route.

From Maya Port, a short 30-45 minute boat ride will take you to Malapascua Island, where Buena Vida Resort and Spa is located. Boat fares are usually between PHP 100 to PHP 200. For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Davao or Iloilo, flying into Cebu is the most practical first step, followed by the land and sea transfer to Daanbantayan.

Best Time to Visit Daanbantayan

The dry season, from December to May, is generally considered the best time to visit Daanbantayan and Malapascua Island. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calm seas, which are ideal for island hopping, diving, and other water activities. The weather is pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 28°C to 32°C.

The period from June to November marks the wet season, where occasional rainfall and stronger winds can occur. While you might find fewer crowds and potentially lower prices during this time, there's a higher chance of weather disruptions affecting travel and outdoor plans. For those prioritizing consistent good weather for beach and water activities, the dry season is the preferred choice.

Food and Dining Near Daanbantayan — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Daanbantayan, be sure to sample some of the local Cebuano delicacies. Kinilaw, a Filipino version of ceviche, is a must-try. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that perfectly complements the tropical climate. You can find excellent kinilaw at local eateries near the beaches.

Another local favorite is Lechon Cebu, considered by many to be the best lechon in the Philippines. This roasted whole pig is known for its incredibly crispy skin and succulent, flavorful meat. While it might be more commonly found in larger towns, smaller versions or lechon paksiw (lechon stewed in sauce) are often available in local carinderias.

For seafood lovers, grilled fish and other fresh catches are abundant. Malapascua Island, being a fishing community, offers a variety of seafood prepared in simple yet delicious ways. Look for stalls selling freshly grilled tuna, squid, or other local fish, often served with soy sauce, calamansi, and chili. It’s a simple pleasure that highlights the freshness of the ingredients.

Don't forget to try some local sweets and snacks. Dried mangoes from Cebu are a popular pasalubong, but also look for local delicacies like otap (flaky puff pastry) or masareal (peanut brittle). These treats offer a sweet end to a meal or a delightful snack while exploring the island.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Daanbantayan

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and the people of Daanbantayan and Malapascua Island are no exception. A friendly greeting like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) goes a long way. Respect local customs, especially when visiting religious sites or interacting with elders. Dress modestly when not at the beach or resort.

Safety on Malapascua Island is generally good, but it's always wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. For any emergencies, local police can be contacted through the barangay officials. It's also a good idea to have travel insurance for unexpected medical needs.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is useful for getting around. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used. If you plan on diving, apps like Diveboard or MyDiveLog can help you track your dives. Having a currency converter app can also be handy for managing expenses.

Was to stay 3 nights but due to Cyclone and possibility of being stranded on island only stayed one night. Room had two twin beds and very nice balcony with hammock, couch and chairs. You face an inside wooded area with other rooms. Chickens are very loud in the morning. Shower is nice, shampoo and body wash provided, no conditioner. Beds were small and a bit shaky, also bed on right you had to move to get at plug to try and charge your electronics. We only slept there one night but I awoke with a tingly sensation in my hand which ended up turning into about 20 welts. It was the hand I sleep on under my pillow so unsure what bug got me (bedbugs, ants, ?) But since it didn't appear till after we left the island that day I couldn't look at the bed and try and figure it out. I know there were ants in the room since you could see them coming under the door but if it was ants I would think more than just my hand would have been bit. It is about a 6 minute walk to their breakfast and dive shop. We didn't dive with them or have breakfast due to early morning dive with Evolution. We did have dinner once and lunch once at Ocean Vida which was excellent. Didn't get to enjoy any of the amenities due to our short stay here.

From the moment we arrived at Buena Vida, we were treated like royalty. All the staff were so welcoming and accommodating. October is a very quiet time of year so there weren't many guests there. The breakfast each morning was freshly prepared al a carte (amazing bacon). Because the weather was quite poor, we enjoyed 3 of the free sessions of yoga and a number of good quality spa sessions. Ocean Vida, the sister hotel, at the beach has a good restaurant and bar area which we enjoyed and we used Sea Explorers next door for a great dive trip. Malapascua feels very unspoilt and if you walk up to the beach in the north of the island, you pass through everyday village life (which includes a lot of cockerels, pigs and dogs). A very pleasant relaxing stay.

Nice small hotel. The staff were fantastic and quickly arranged activities that we were interested in. We loved the balcony. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It's in a beautiful garden setting and a very short two minute walk to the beach. A great place to unwind after a swim and some sunbaking during the day, which you can do at their partner hotel right on the beach. The breakfast is great and the rooms always clean, comfortable and spacious. We loved our own little private verandah with hammock as well. It's your perfect getaway!

We were very happy staying at Buena Vida. The place was clean and comfortable and to me what made it great was that the staff was so helpful and polite especially the main receptionist we called her “Nelly”. The bedroom was well equipped and the breakfast was delicious, and there is a resting area for own room with couches and a hammock

Me and my girlfriend spent two nights here and they were so accommodating. This was the favourite part of our trip to Philippines , the canyoneering is a must do when you’re there !! Ken was so helpful he drove us around everywhere we wanted to go and also took us to a few waterfalls we didn’t know about which turned out to be awesome. I couldn’t rate these guys any higher an overall fantastic experience thank you

Overall, a great stay. Hotel staff are amazing and friendly. Hotel set in nice tropical setting off busy stretch but only 2mins to beach. Good breakfast, and a nice spa. Would definitely return.

The hotel is a short walk from the beach but the hotel's partnership with Ocean Vida made beach access easy. The only negative was the weak and inconsistent wifi. I would definitely stay here again.

Hotel was nice, staff was ok. I emailed two days prior about helping us get there and never got a response. There are no directions on the website and it's slightly hard to find. Even when we went to leave there was no offer to help us get back to the ferry.
