Best Time to Visit Puerto Galera

Puerto Galera experiences a tropical climate, with generally warm temperatures year-round. The dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you can expect sunny days and calmer seas, making it ideal for beach activities, swimming, and water sports. The period between December and February is particularly popular, offering pleasant weather for exploring the island.

The wet season runs from June to October, characterized by occasional rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy. While this period might see fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, it’s important to be prepared for possible disruptions to outdoor activities due to weather conditions. For travelers seeking the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, the shoulder months of November and May can offer a great experience.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Galera — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Puerto Galera, you'll find a variety of Filipino dishes and fresh seafood. A must-try is the grilled seafood, often caught daily and prepared simply to highlight its freshness. Look for stalls and restaurants offering grilled fish, squid, and prawns. Many establishments along Sabang Beach serve these delights, often accompanied by rice and a side of soy sauce with calamansi and chili.

Another local favorite is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing appetizer, especially on a hot day. You can find excellent Kinilaw at local eateries, often prepared with the catch of the day, offering a tangy and zesty flavor profile that is distinctly Filipino.

Don't forget to try Laing, a Bicolano dish made from taro leaves cooked in coconut milk with dried fish or pork and a blend of spices. While originating from the Bicol region, it's widely available in many parts of the Philippines, including Puerto Galera. Its creamy texture and savory taste make it a comforting and flavorful dish.

For a sweet ending, try Halo-Halo, the popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect treat to cool down after a day of exploring. Many restaurants and small stalls in Puerto Galera offer their own versions of this iconic dessert.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Galera

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and Puerto Galera is no exception. A common local custom is the "po" and "opo" when addressing elders, showing respect. When interacting with locals, a friendly demeanor and a smile go a long way. It’s also customary to dress modestly when visiting local villages or churches, though beachwear is perfectly acceptable at the resorts and beaches.

Safety in Puerto Galera is generally good, especially in tourist areas like Sabang Beach. However, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. When using tricycles, agree on the fare beforehand. For emergencies, note down the local police and hospital contact numbers. The Philippine National Police (PNP) hotline is a good general number to have.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is useful for finding your way around. For communication, apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used. If you plan on booking activities or tours, the Traveloka app is indispensable for finding and booking attractions, flights, and hotels. Having these tools readily available can make your trip smoother and more enjoyable.

The room was ok. The view from our room was over looking a roof top but did enjoy the patio deck. The room floor was dirty and very sandy. The coffee cups were not cleaned. We arrived middle of the night due to travel delays and our paid for room was already rented. We did get a free upgrade. The room shown in the booking was not the room we were getting. We extended our stay 3 days and had to pay upgrade charges. All and all I would stay there again. At least next time I know what to expect. Our breakfast there was not included but it was very good and plentiful.

Stay away if at all possible. The dive shop is courteous and professional but the hotel is so bad it hard to describe. Starts with the owner. Rude and unfriendly and unprofessional doesn’t bigin to describe this flipping guy. Wow what a way to treat guests that can write a reviews. Upon check in said help and asking a few questions he was so rude that we were in shock. Like it was beneath him to even speak to a germ like us. Plus I stayed 6 out of my 8 days booked because half the time there was no water. If you companies about no water he looked at you like you are the problem. Oh and NO HOT WATER EVER!!! Solar heat water so if cloudy or rain etc there is no hot water. Lucky to get cold shower because water not working. Some restaurant dishes ok. But they have a nightly BBQ, that they sell low grade top sirloin and call it tender loin. So over cooked and tough you couldn’t eat it. But charge you anyway. Condition of bathroom and rooms in general is deplorable.

When i travel, there are 2 things that are very very important for me. Clean sheets and clean bathroom. The room i booked from this hotel told me that i should set my standards higher. It gives you that feel that you really are on a vacation and throws u a wake-up that you are in 1 of the islands because of the wooden accents and pieces. The veranda, which i only wanted so i could have a place to smoke, has a view of the ocean although there's a roof of their kitchen that covers a part of it but come on, i can't be that lucky. The matress...ohhh gosh the matress is a winner. It provided me comfort right from the day we arrived until we left. The moment our our backs are on that bed, snore will follow. There is something wrong with the airconditioning though, it's really not cold maybe because of the size of the room that's quite spacious, but hey, they've got the e-fan provided for free to boost it up. The ambiance is nice and hellllll, good food! The serving was quite of a handful too. Really worth the money. I will definitely recommend Capt'n Gregg to my friends.

Stayed at Capt’n Gregg’s for a 3-day conference. Accommodations were awesome. Staff was great. Check-in was a bit scary because Expedia messed-up the booking, but Chuck was able to make everything right. Loved the place.

Basic but very comfortable rooms. The restaurant is quite good and proportions are very big. The attached dive shop is first rate.

I have stayed at this place before and everything worked fine. But this time there was no hot water and the air conditioning seemed subpar. The room is clean, but small. Great view of the ocean, plus they have a restaurant and a good dive shop on the property.

Lots of deferred maintenance. Owner will not fix anything even if you ask. No hot water, they rely on solar, may be warm in the afternoon. Food is good and staff is friendly but terrible service.

The place has some charme. The upstairs Beach Resto-Bar is kept in wooden marine style and offers a good view on Sabang Beach. Rooms are clean and friendly.

I did not stay there. They had no record of my reservation. My confirmation # did not matter to the desk girls. I did not stay and argue with them. I went to another hotel and paid for my stay. I hope you will refund my payment. Thank You, RichardA Raymer

Room/bed OK, basic breakfast, slow WIFI, waves noise at night, set up your alarm because the staff forgot to wake me up in the morning. I rate this hotel at 2 star only.

A good bar, restaurant and accomodation, especially for Divers and/or Hashers. Interesting stay during Typhoon, apart from problems with power and wifi mostly caused by the weather conditions. Good, friendly staff. Excellent food.
