What Guests Say About Their Stay

My ETA was well past the last check in, but a member of staff was kind enough to stay behind. The dorm had 4 bunkbeds, an AC unit and a fan. The AC and fan worked well. Each guest was given a towel and a locker big enough to hold a large backpack. The bed had an Asian style firm mattress and a thin sheet, a private light, 2 sockets and a small shelf. Common areas include a kitchen area, dining/working area with breakfast tables and high chairs, and another lounge area by the reception. There's no AC in the common areas, although the areas were open with nettings to restrict insects, so at least there was air circulating. I never got bitten while in the common area. There are several toilet/bathrooms. These were always clean whenever I used them. The water pressure is okay, good enough and works. There's not much ventilation in the shower rooms though. There is Wifi throughout the property and it works well. Location wise, the hostel is roughly between the airport and town. it's about 15 minutes walk to the port and 20 to the centre of Dumaguete. There is a convenience store close by and several restaurants too. At night, the area is quiet, but you can hear the traffic in the morning. The hostel employ staff who are hard of hearing, so kudos for that. The communication can be slower, but please be kind and patient. The staff work hard cleaning several times a day. Overall, I had an excellent stay. The hostel and facilities are basic, but clean and comfortable.

Top-notch customer experience, which started via timely and responsive live chat via the guesthouse's FB site with the owner, who helped me book an Apo Island tour before my arrival. The room was super neat, clean with air con and large lockers. The location is good, close to the ferry terminal to bohol. The owner was very sweet and caring, with lots of recommendations for sight seeing and restaurants. She also welcomed me with a piece of sylvana :) I enjoyed chatting with her. If all other hostels were of similar quality and standard, backpackers' life abroad would have been more enjoyable. Keep up the great work, Casa Arrieta! I look forward to revisiting!

Your Travel Guide to Dumaguete as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dumaguete from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For travelers coming from Manila, flying is the most convenient option. Several airlines operate daily flights to Sibulan Airport (DGT) in Dumaguete. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes, with fares varying based on booking time and airline. You can easily book your flight on Traveloka.

From other major cities like Cebu or Iloilo, you can also find direct flights to Dumaguete. If you prefer a more scenic or budget-friendly journey, consider ferry services from nearby islands or bus routes connecting to Dumaguete via ferry transfers. These options usually take longer but offer a different travel perspective.

If you're driving from nearby provinces in Negros Oriental or Negros Occidental, you can reach Dumaguete via well-maintained national highways. Be prepared for potential toll fees and factor in travel time, especially if coming from farther distances. The journey offers glimpses of the island's diverse landscapes.

Best Time to Visit Dumaguete

Dumaguete enjoys a generally pleasant climate throughout the year, making it accessible for visitors anytime. However, the dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the best time to visit. During these months, you can expect less rainfall and more sunshine, perfect for outdoor activities and island hopping.

The peak tourist season often coincides with major holidays like Christmas and Holy Week, as well as summer breaks from March to May. During these periods, expect larger crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices. If you prefer a more tranquil visit, consider the shoulder months of November or February.

The wet season, from June to October, can bring occasional heavy rains. While this might disrupt some outdoor plans, it also means fewer tourists and lower prices. Many indoor attractions and cultural experiences remain accessible, and the lush scenery is particularly beautiful after a rainfall.

Food and Dining Near Dumaguete — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Dumaguete is complete without savoring its local delicacies. A must-try is the famous Silvanas from Sans Rival. These frozen meringue cookies with buttercream filling are a delightful sweet treat that perfectly complements the city's tropical vibe. You can find them at Sans Rival Cakes and Pastries.

Another local specialty is Budbod Kabog, a type of suman made from millet seeds. It has a unique texture and a subtly sweet flavor, often enjoyed for breakfast or as a snack. Look for this delicacy in local markets or smaller eateries around the city for an authentic taste.

For seafood lovers, Dumaguete offers an abundance of fresh catches. Enjoy grilled fish, prawns, and squid at various restaurants along Rizal Boulevard. The simple preparation often highlights the natural flavors of the seafood, making it a satisfying meal for any Filipino palate.

Don't forget to try the local version of Kinilaw, a Filipino ceviche. Prepared with fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili, it’s a refreshing dish that’s perfect for the warm climate. Many local carinderias and restaurants serve their own take on this classic.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Dumaguete

Dumaguete is known for its friendly and laid-back culture. Locals are generally welcoming, and a simple "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect local customs, dress modestly when visiting churches or more traditional areas, and always ask permission before taking photos of people.

For safety, Dumaguete is considered one of the safer cities in the Philippines. However, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. In case of emergencies, local police can be reached at 117.

Essential apps for your trip include a reliable navigation app like Google Maps to help you find your way around. A translation app can be useful if you encounter local dialects, though English is widely understood. For booking accommodations and activities, Traveloka is your go-to app.

Consider downloading a ride-hailing app if available in Dumaguete for convenient transportation. Having a local SIM card with a data plan will also be beneficial for staying connected and accessing these services easily throughout your stay.

I must say i was pleasantly surprised when i arrived. I'm used to that whenever a hostel is cheap, its dirty and bad. Casa Arrieta is none of the above, its one of the best hostels ive visited so far. The beds for example are cleaned and made, then they seal them before you arrive so no dust can enter. In the rooms they have lockers big enough for me to store 2 big backpacks, they have both AC and fan. There is a hot shower which is most welcome. If you want breakfast you have to buy it yourself, but there is a fridge there for you to store groceries in. The staff is super friendly, i was sick and they offered to get me medication, food etc. The location is decent, a 20 minute walk and you're in the centre, if you pay around 60 peso you can go to Robinsons place mall. If you're going to Dumaguete, i recommend that you stay here, they help you with all information they can provide.
