Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For many Filipino travelers, flying into Manila is the most common method of arrival. The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) serves as the main gateway, with numerous domestic flights arriving daily from major cities like Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo. Airlines such as Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer frequent flights. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the origin city, booking time, and airline. Travel time from key cities typically ranges from 1 to 2 hours. To secure the best rates, it's always recommended to book flight tickets well in advance.

For those coming from Luzon's more distant provinces, bus travel is a practical and economical option. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila, such as those in Cubao and Pasay, receive buses from various regions. For example, a bus trip from Baguio City can take approximately 5-7 hours and may cost between PHP 500 to PHP 800. Similarly, journeys from Bicol can take 8-10 hours with fares ranging from PHP 800 to PHP 1,200. These services offer a direct route into the heart of the capital.

Driving to Manila is also feasible for those residing within accessible driving distance. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to Metro Manila. Toll fees will apply, varying based on the entry and exit points. For instance, traveling from Pampanga via NLEX might incur around PHP 300-400 in toll fees, with the drive taking approximately 2-3 hours, depending on traffic. Navigating Manila itself requires familiarity with its road networks and traffic patterns.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is generally sunny with lower humidity, making it more pleasant for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. Temperatures usually range from 25°C to 35°C. This period also coincides with many local holidays and festivals, offering a chance to experience Filipino culture firsthand.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this season can see fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices, it also means that outdoor plans might be disrupted. If you choose to visit during this time, it's wise to have indoor activities planned and to be prepared for potential travel delays due to weather conditions. The shoulder months of November and April can offer a good balance of favorable weather and fewer crowds.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No visit to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. Adobo, often considered the unofficial national dish, is a must-try. This savory dish features meat, typically chicken or pork, braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and black peppercorns, often served with rice. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries and even in hotel restaurants.

Another Filipino favorite is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, usually made with tamarind broth, meat (pork, beef, or fish), and a variety of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. Its distinct tangy flavor is incredibly comforting. For a taste of something sweet and satisfying, Halo-halo is essential. This popular dessert is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream.

Lechon, a whole roasted pig with crispy skin, is a celebratory dish that is a true Filipino indulgence. While often found at parties, some restaurants offer lechon portions. For a more accessible yet equally delicious experience, try Sisig, a sizzling dish made from chopped pig's face and ears, seasoned with onions, chili peppers, and calamansi, often served on a hot plate. These dishes represent the diverse and flavorful palate of Filipino cuisine.

Near Century Park Hotel, you can explore local carinderias for authentic flavors or visit established restaurants in areas like Malate and Ermita for a wider selection. Many establishments offer these classic Filipino dishes, allowing you to savor the local tastes conveniently.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) is always appreciated. Respect for elders is paramount, and it's customary to use "po" and "opo" when speaking to older individuals or those in authority. Be mindful of personal space in crowded areas and avoid loud or disruptive behavior.

When it comes to safety in Manila, it's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded public places like markets and transport hubs. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. It's also wise to use reputable transportation services, such as those booked through apps or official taxi stands. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. Grab is the go-to app for ride-hailing and food delivery, offering convenience and transparent pricing. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used. Having these apps on your smartphone will make navigating Manila much smoother and more efficient.

Reception and reservation team is uncompromising, unyielding and rigid. Do not make any mistake on your reservations. They will not honor any requests even though it’s simple and common sense. They will give you the run arounds when trying to speak to the right person and resolve the issue.

Staff can be a bit friendly and I was disappointed when I went down to the restaurant for our breakfast, we were stopped (which is embarrassing) by the hotel staff due to communication and mismanage system as telling that room was only paid by one! I but later clarified! will be fine by that supposedly but the way they talk to me is so humiliating - that is so rude!! Some staff need to undergo training to enhance people skills/communication and compare to other 4 star hotel, staff need to be more welcoming (receptionist). Housekeeping staff are really good The place needs an update and I think if you are in a budget - this will be okish, but don’t expect any extras compare to any 4 star hotel within the area.

Worn down, dated hotel, with sub-par food, moldy rooms, and failing systems. On my first night, there was a loud pop in the entry, shortly later water was coming out of the ceiling. I immediately called to report this. 25 minutes later I called again. Same response, “we will send someone soon”. At this point I had placed towels on the floor and was using the waste basket as a bucket - this is how much water was coming out! Almost 30-minutes after the second call, two technicians show up and stop the waterfall. They dumped the water in the shower and placed the waste basket back on top of the wet towels and left. No clean up, and the hotel never sent anyone to clean up either. I pushed the dirty, wet towels into the hallway and went to bed. I had been up for almost 20 hours at this point and just wanted to go to sleep. The hotel never came to clean up. Never replaced the towels I used to clean up the room, and never addressed any of this me. Then, when you (try to) leave, you must wait in the lobby while housekeeping checks your room before you’re given a permission slip to leave. You cannot get out the door with luggage without security asking you for this slip. Clearly the wrong hotel choice for me.

Reception and reservation team is uncompromising, unyielding and rigid. Do not make any mistake on your reservations. They will not honor any requests even though it’s simple and common sense. They will give you the run arounds when trying to speak to the right person and resolve the issue.

Our high school celebrated our Golden Reunion Gala on this hotel. It was truly wonderful and we enjoyed the night. The staff are all friendly and helpful. We also enjoyed the sumptuous and delicious complimentary breakfast buffet.

Staff was very annoying they said we could check in 2:30pm. Their standard check in supposed to be 2pm. We pre registered early but we waited to long for the room

Room was spotless. They accomodated my request for no comforter & provided 4 topsheets due to sensitive skin. My only request was to provide more rolls of toilet paper. Breakfast was excellent. Lots of choices to suit different palates.

I enjoyed the stay. The hotel is slightly older, but it was clean. I would stay again! Great breakfast!
