As a regular staying at Essentia in Dumaguete, Charos dormitel is a breath of fresh air !! Outstanding room, staff, restaurant and not so many guests (not crowded like Essentia) ! I agree with other travelers reviews now ! This was a 5 star experience for one night stay. Definitely will return in the near future😀

The room is big with a welcoming feeling and the AC is cold. Elite cabin coordinated furnishing are very nice all through out the facility. Interior is very cozy and provides a homey feeling as one walks leisurely through the hallway. Free breakfast. The diner is well set-up with beautiful indoor plants giving a relaxing, comfortable and empowering ambiance. Though a bit noisy specially for light sleepers, this can be remedied by using heavy drapes in the room. A bit far from the beach and the city proper which is not a problem since public transportation “pedicab” is readily available or one can easily rent a motorcycle. The place is highly recommended.

Your Travel Guide to Dumaguete City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Dumaguete City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, the most convenient way to reach Dumaguete City is by air. From Manila, several airlines operate daily flights to Sibulan Airport (DGT), which serves Dumaguete. Major carriers like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer direct flights, with travel time typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options can often be found for approximately PHP 2,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip if booked during seat sales or off-peak periods. It's always a good idea to book flight tickets in advance, especially during holidays or peak travel seasons, to secure better prices and ensure availability.

If you are coming from Cebu City, another popular gateway, you have two main options: flying or taking a ferry. Direct flights from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) to Sibulan Airport (DGT) are available and are the quickest option, taking about 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Cebu Port to Dumaguete Port. This is a more scenic and often more economical choice, with several shipping lines operating the route.

The ferry journey typically takes around 4 to 6 hours, and ticket prices range from approximately PHP 800 to PHP 1,500, depending on the class of service. This option is great for those who prefer not to fly or want to enjoy the sea voyage.

For travelers originating from Mindanao, particularly Davao City, flying is the most practical method. While there might not be as many direct flights as from Manila or Cebu, airlines do offer routes to Sibulan Airport (DGT). The flight duration is usually around 1 hour and 30 minutes. If direct flights are unavailable or too expensive, you might consider flying to Cebu first and then taking another flight or ferry to Dumaguete.

Bus travel to Dumaguete is also an option from various points in Negros Oriental and neighboring provinces, but for long distances from major hubs like Manila or Davao, flying is generally recommended for its speed and efficiency.

Best Time to Visit Dumaguete City

Dumaguete City enjoys a tropical climate, characterized by warm temperatures year-round. The city experiences two main seasons: a dry season from roughly December to May, and a wet season from June to November. For travelers who prefer sunny skies and minimal rainfall, the dry season, particularly from December to March, is often considered the best time to visit.

During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor activities, exploring the city's attractions, and enjoying the coastal areas. This period also coincides with major holidays like Christmas and Holy Week, which can mean larger crowds and higher accommodation prices.

The shoulder months of the dry season, such as April and May, can be quite hot but are often less crowded than the peak holiday periods. If you are looking for a balance between good weather and fewer tourists, these months might be perfect. The wet season, from June to November, brings more frequent rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy but often comes in short bursts.

While this season might deter some beach-goers, it can be an excellent time for budget-conscious travelers as prices for flights and accommodation tend to be lower. The rain also brings a lushness to the surrounding landscapes, and indoor activities or exploring the city's cultural sites remain enjoyable.

Ultimately, the "best" time to visit Dumaguete City depends on your personal preferences and priorities. If you prioritize sunshine and outdoor adventures, aim for the dry season. If you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere and potentially lower costs, the wet season can be a great choice, provided you are prepared for occasional rain. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Dumaguete's welcoming atmosphere and the warmth of its people ensure a pleasant stay.

Food and Dining Near Dumaguete City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Dumaguete City, often called the "City of Gentle People," also boasts a culinary scene that delights the palate, offering a range of flavors that are both familiar and uniquely local. For Filipino travelers, exploring the food is as much a part of the experience as visiting the sights. One dish you absolutely must try is Kinilaw na Tanigue. Similar to ceviche, this dish features fresh, raw Spanish mackerel (tanigue) marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili.

The tanginess of the vinegar cuts through the richness of the fish, creating a refreshing appetizer that is a staple in coastal Filipino cities. You'll find excellent versions at local eateries along Rizal Boulevard.

Another local specialty that showcases the region's bounty is SUTUKIL. This is not a single dish but a cooking method that stands for SUgba (grill), TUba (stew), and KILaw (raw, like kinilaw). Restaurants offering SUTUKIL allow you to choose your fresh seafood—be it fish, prawns, or squid—and have it prepared according to your preference. Grilling brings out the natural sweetness of the seafood, stewing offers comforting, flavorful broths, and the kinilaw provides a zesty kick.

It’s a fantastic way to sample a variety of local seafood preparations in one meal.

For those with a sweet tooth, Dumaguete is famous for its Sans Rival. This is a rich, layered dessert made with cashew meringue, buttercream, and chopped cashews. It's incredibly decadent and a perfect treat to enjoy with a cup of coffee after a meal or as an afternoon snack. Many local bakeries and cafes offer Sans Rival, and it's a popular pasalubong (souvenir) item. Don't leave Dumaguete without trying this delightful confection.

You can also explore local markets for fresh fruits and other regional delicacies, making your culinary journey through Dumaguete a truly satisfying one.

A simple "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) in the local dialect (Cebuano/Visayan) will be met with smiles. Respect for elders and public spaces is highly valued. When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dressing modestly is appreciated.

The cleanest hotel that we have been to in the Philippine. The staff are truly accomodating and as they represent of what the people in Dumaguete are well known for " most gentle people ". Dining experience including the complimentary breakfast was top -notch for the food quality and taste .This hotel is highly recommendable.

Smaller Property with shops on the lower level, restarunt on the second and rooms on the third. I was on the third floor. Clean hotel but is located in a little of an out of the way in Dumaguete.
