Your Travel Guide to Tacloban City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Tacloban City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Tacloban City from Manila is by air. Several airlines operate daily flights to Daniel Z Romualdez Airport (TAC). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight, but budget-friendly options are often available.

For those preferring a more economical, albeit longer, journey, bus travel is an option. Buses depart from major terminals in Metro Manila, such as Cubao or Pasay. The trip is extensive, often taking 18 to 24 hours, and involves crossing the San Juanico Bridge. Bus fares typically range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 2,500, depending on the bus company and service class.

Driving from Manila is also possible for adventurous travelers. The route involves a combination of land travel and ferry crossings, or a long drive through Luzon and the Visayas. This journey can take over 24 hours and involves significant fuel and toll costs. It's a route best suited for those who enjoy road trips and have ample time.

Best Time to Visit Tacloban City

The dry season, from March to May, generally offers the most pleasant weather for visiting Tacloban City. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower chances of rain, making it ideal for outdoor activities, beach visits, and exploring the city's attractions. Temperatures are warm, typical of the Philippine climate.

The wet season runs from June to November, characterized by increased rainfall and the possibility of typhoons, especially from September to November. While you might find fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices during this period, it's essential to monitor weather forecasts closely. The period from December to February offers a transition with moderate weather.

Food and Dining Near Tacloban City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When in Tacloban, a culinary exploration is a must. One local specialty you should seek out is Kinilaw, a Filipino ceviche where fresh raw fish is cured in vinegar, often with ginger, onions, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that highlights the freshness of the seafood available in the region.

Another dish that showcases Leyte's culinary heritage is Binagol. This is a rich, sweet delicacy made from taro (gabi), coconut milk, and sugar, steamed inside a banana leaf or a dried coconut shell. Its unique texture and sweet, earthy flavor make it a distinctive local treat worth trying.

For seafood lovers, grilled fish and other marine catches are abundant. Many local eateries and restaurants offer freshly grilled options, often seasoned simply to let the natural flavors shine through. Enjoying these by the coast is a classic Filipino dining experience. Don't forget to try local delicacies like Puto Maya and Sikwate (hot chocolate).

Exploring the local markets and smaller eateries will give you the most authentic taste of Tacloban. These places often serve home-style Filipino dishes that are both delicious and affordable, offering a genuine glimpse into the local food culture.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Tacloban City

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and Tacloban is no exception. A friendly greeting like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) is always appreciated. Respect local customs, especially when visiting churches or more traditional areas. Dress modestly when appropriate, particularly when visiting religious sites.

Tacloban City is generally safe for tourists, but it's always wise to exercise standard precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places, and keep your valuables secure. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, local police can be reached at 911.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for getting around. For communication, ensure you have messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger. Additionally, having a currency converter app can be helpful for managing your budget.

Familiarize yourself with basic Tagalog or Waray phrases if possible, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. Being open to local interactions will enrich your understanding of the culture and make your trip more engaging.

Poor service and expensive upgrade. Private bathroom is not included in my chosen room and needed to add additional 1000 pesos for a room upgrade. I spent almost 12,000 pesos for my initial booking including the 8 thousand pesos roundtrip ticket. Meaning, the left over from 12,000 pesos is more or less 4,000 pesos. Then I added 1000 pesos. VERY EXPENSIVE FOR THAT KIND OF STAY. I SHOULVE CHOSEN ZEN ROOM OR RED DOORS INSTEAD.
