Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila is the most efficient method. Major airlines operate frequent flights from key cities like Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo to Manila. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka, with fares often ranging from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on the origin city and booking time. Flight durations typically range from 1 to 2 hours.

From NAIA, you have several options to reach Makati. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available at the airport terminals, offering a direct route to your accommodation. This option usually costs between PHP 300 to PHP 500 and takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, though traffic can significantly impact travel time. Alternatively, you can take the airport bus services that connect to various points in Metro Manila, from where you can transfer to the MRT or LRT lines heading towards Makati.

For those traveling from nearby provinces in Luzon, bus travel is a more economical choice. Numerous bus companies operate routes to Metro Manila, with terminals located strategically within the capital. From these bus terminals, you can utilize the MRT or LRT systems, or take a jeepney or bus to reach Makati. Bus fares are considerably lower, often ranging from PHP 500 to PHP 1,000 for inter-provincial trips, and travel times can vary from 4 to 10 hours depending on the distance.

Best Time to Visit Makati

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Makati is no exception. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers seeking pleasant weather is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity levels, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions, shopping districts, and dining establishments.

The period between December and February is particularly favored for its cooler temperatures, averaging around 26 to 30 degrees Celsius. This makes walking around the city and visiting places like Glorietta Mall more comfortable. While this is considered peak tourist season, meaning slightly higher accommodation prices and more crowds, the weather conditions are generally the most agreeable for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

The wet season, from May to October, brings higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower prices for hotels, it can disrupt outdoor plans. However, for travelers who don't mind occasional rain and are looking for a more budget-friendly trip, the wet season can still be a viable option, especially if your focus is on indoor activities like shopping and dining.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Makati, being a culinary melting pot, offers a vast array of Filipino dishes. A must-try is **Adobo**, the unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, the savory and slightly tangy flavor derived from soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns is a comforting taste of home. You can find excellent versions in local eateries and even in some of the more upscale restaurants in Makati.

Another Filipino favorite is **Sinigang**, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth. It can feature pork, beef, fish, or shrimp, along with a variety of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The distinct sourness is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. Many Filipino restaurants in Makati serve this hearty soup, perfect for a satisfying meal.

For those who enjoy grilled delicacies, **Lechon Kawali** is a crispy, deep-fried pork belly that is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. The crunchy exterior gives way to tender, flavorful meat. It's often served with a side of soy-vinegar dipping sauce. You'll find this popular dish in many Filipino restaurants and carinderias around Makati.

Don't leave without trying **Halo-Halo**, the ultimate Filipino dessert. This colorful concoction is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a perfect way to cool down and indulge your sweet tooth after a day of exploring the city. Many cafes and restaurants offer their own unique take on this beloved treat.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Respect for elders and a generally amiable demeanor are appreciated. While Makati is a modern city, understanding basic etiquette, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites, is always a good practice.

Safety in Makati is generally good, especially in well-trafficked areas like the central shopping district. However, like any major urban center, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded places, and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It’s also advisable to use reputable transportation services. In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is 117.

For communication and navigation, having a local SIM card can be very useful. Essential apps for travelers include Google Maps for navigation, Grab for ride-hailing and food delivery, and a currency converter. Room were okay, not clean enough as I expect hotels should be but still okay. Room sizes are big enough to accomodate 4 pax. No complimentary WiFi (you have to pay PHP80 per hour if you wish to connect), incomplete bathroom toiletries and though they have a kitchenette inside the unit you also have to pay extra for the gas stove, cooking wares and utensils. Should you require a parking space at the hotel you need to reserve a slot a week before your check in, and again pay an extra fee of PHP100 per night. They don't serve in house meals but the hotel is surrounded by restos bars and a nearby grocery so food wont be a problem. Location is good.
