Absolutely beautiful location. The view ia amazing. Staff could not have been better. Food was good and reasonably priced (escpecially considering how remote). The boat ride there and back was a bit expensive (private boat is all that is available). The cottages are nice and clean but could use some maintenance.

Your Travel Guide to Socorro, Siargao Islands as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Socorro, Siargao Islands from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Siargao Islands, including Socorro, from Manila or other major Philippine cities like Cebu is by air. Direct flights are available to Siargao Airport (IAO) from Manila and Cebu. Flight durations are typically around 1.5 to 2 hours. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but expect prices to range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip.

From Siargao Airport, you will need to take a tricycle or van to a port, such as Dapa Port. The journey to the port takes approximately 30-45 minutes. From Dapa Port, you can then catch a ferry or a smaller boat service to Bucas Grande Island, where Socorro is located. Boat fares are generally affordable, usually within the PHP 100-300 range, and the trip can take another 1 to 2 hours depending on the type of boat and sea conditions.

While there are no direct bus routes to Siargao Islands due to its island nature, you can take buses to Surigao City on mainland Mindanao if you prefer a land and sea combination. From Surigao City, you would then take a ferry to Siargao Island. This option is more time-consuming and less direct than flying but can be a more budget-friendly choice for some travelers. Driving your own vehicle is not feasible for reaching the islands directly.

Best Time to Visit Socorro, Siargao Islands

The ideal time for Filipino travelers to visit Socorro and the Siargao Islands is generally during the dry season, which runs from March to October. During these months, you can expect more sunshine and calmer seas, making it perfect for island hopping, swimming, and exploring the natural attractions like lagoons and caves. The weather is typically warm and pleasant, ideal for outdoor activities.

While the dry season is popular, it also marks the peak tourist period, especially from July to October. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, consider visiting during the shoulder months of March to June. The period from November to February is considered the wet season, with a higher chance of rainfall and stronger waves, which might affect some water activities but can also offer a more serene experience for those who don't mind occasional rain.

Food and Dining Near Socorro, Siargao Islands — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

When exploring Socorro and the wider Siargao Islands, be sure to sample some of the local Filipino delicacies that highlight fresh seafood. Grilled fish, often freshly caught and simply prepared, is a staple and a must-try. Look for dishes like 'Sinugba' (grilled meat or seafood) or 'Kinilaw' (Filipino ceviche), which showcase the natural flavors of the ocean's bounty. Many local eateries and resorts offer these preparations.

Another local favorite you should seek out is 'La Paz Batchoy', a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular across the Philippines. Its rich broth, tender pork, and savory toppings make it a comforting meal, especially after a day of adventure. While Siargao is more known for seafood, you can often find this beloved noodle soup in local carinderias or restaurants catering to diverse tastes.

Don't forget to try 'Halo-Halo' for dessert, a characteristic Filipino treat. This popular shaved ice dessert is mixed with sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and topped with ube ice cream. It's the perfect refreshing end to any meal, especially in the tropical heat. Many local spots and cafes in Siargao offer their own delicious versions of this iconic dessert.

For a taste of regional Mindanao cuisine, explore dishes that incorporate local produce and spices. While specific Socorro specialties might be best discovered locally, embracing the general Filipino love for flavorful, home-style cooking will lead you to satisfying meals. Always ask locals for their recommendations on where to find the most authentic and delicious food experiences in the area.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Socorro, Siargao Islands

The culture in Socorro and Siargao Islands is generally warm and hospitable, reflecting the broader Filipino culture. Respect local customs by dressing modestly when visiting villages or religious sites. Learning a few basic Tagalog or local dialect phrases like "Salamat" (Thank you) can go a long way in fostering positive interactions with the community. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Safety in Socorro is generally good, but as with any travel, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. It's advisable to stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and be cautious when swimming in unfamiliar waters. For emergencies, note down the local police and hospital contact numbers, which can usually be obtained from your accommodation.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is useful, though connectivity can be spotty in remote areas. A translation app can help bridge language barriers if needed. For managing your bookings and travel plans, the Traveloka app is indispensable, allowing you to access your reservations and explore local attractions and dining options.

It's also a good idea to have a local currency converter app handy for quick price checks. Ensure your mobile phone plan has roaming capabilities or consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival for better connectivity and data access. Staying informed and prepared will allow you to fully enjoy the natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere of Socorro and the Siargao Islands.

The place needs a big cash injection. Redeeming factors are the location and the staff on the ground. The photos are from 2008 so does not reflect its current state. I ate great food whilst there and slept really well, however I experienced outages of electricity and water so I feel the price does not reflect the facilities. It’s a shame really as Clarisa and her team are really passionate about the place but without financial support are powerless. Great experience but price not reflective

The pictures posted at Hotels.com is totally different from the real or actual picture of the resort. The bridge is collapsed, no water in the swimming pool, no power or electricity, no backup power, limited food, rooms not well maintained, rooms not safe, jacuzzi is rusted, overall rate: worst hotel or resort. We can’t cancel our stay, we just left and get a new hotel to stay. Club Tara should not be operated and should be reported to Tourism or city because it’s really unsafe. Hopefully I could get a refund.

The condition of the toilet is terrible (it’s very hard to call it a comfort room). It’s very smelly and unclean. There’s plenty of cockroaches everywhere. The table in the dining area was not wiped. We even saw remnants of food from our previous meal. There is a lot to improve in terms of cleanliness and orderliness. Being an old resort is not an excuse to be untidy. We can tolerate the dilapidation but not a dusty room. If you want to thrive, you need an overhaul.

First of all this place is picturesque. However its in desperate need of maintenance. The jacuzzi tub didn't have hot water and when I ran the motor it smelled like rotten water. Also upon checkin there was no power and we didn't get power til 10pm, they did provide battery lights and the food service still worked. The staff was very friendly. They only accept cash since they are in a very remote place. Also if you get sea sick the boat ride there is really rough

Originally we booked the dormitory type of room but we were disappointed to see the condition when we got there. It was an old smelly room with rusty doorknob and broken door. Since we were the only guests of the hotel during our stay, we decided to upgrade (with corresponding charge) the room for us to have a more comfortable vacation.

Generally, maintenance and upkeep is very poor. Room air conditioner was at floor level, so just a waste of energy. Patio door almost impossible to open & close. Door lock difficult. Water is salty, in shower and faucets etc. Spa pump was very weak. Pool was always empty as they could not get the pump to work, but kept trying, producing only smoke & noise. Jetty was rickety and looked like many boards were about to fail. Staff were friendly and as helpful as they could be under the circumstances. Food was well below expectations. For somewhere peaceful it is a very nice place, but the accommodation and food needs serious attention.

Since we are living in Davao City, we took the car to the pickup point. The communication was good and the banka boat was there as promised. We decided to have the resort to arrange the pickup despite it was overpriced. We arrived in the resort in heavy rain and needed to walk in the same. No umbrella available. We got the announced welcome drink, which was a powdered ice tea. From the club house to the room, again no umbrella and we arrived soaked in the room. The waterfront room was spacious and had even two computers. We never figured out the purpose, because there was no internet and the power plug didn't fit in the wall outlet. All bath fixtures was corroded from the salt water and partly painted! No shower curtain, used bathroom toiletries. Since we were already wet, we planned to use the jacuzzi. When I opened the faucet, deep brown smelly water came out of the faucet. Even I let it run for an hour, it never provided clean water and the pressure was even too low. Since we had no hot water the next three days, we couldn't give it another try until the last evening. It took 3 hours to fill it up, I plugged in the power cord for the jets, since the power button was not more working. Again brown water blew into the tub and made a nice bathing experience impossible. The provided food was overpriced and limited, always something was not available, even a simple coke or eggs or something else. The resort is on a remote island and there is literally nothing to do.

We feel cheated!!!! Our room is full of cockroach, it is opposite from the picture we see before we booked there, when we see the place it is terrible! Dirty, messy, plus expensive! The only good thing is the food. I will never go back in this resort!

Beautiful scenery. If you don’t mind being in a secluded environment with tons of wildlife around, then this is the place for you.

Absolutely beautiful location. The view ia amazing. Staff could not have been better. Food was good and reasonably priced (escpecially considering how remote). The boat ride there and back was a bit expensive (private boat is all that is available). The cottages are nice and clean but could use some maintenance.

There are so many things that need to be fix. A bit expensive while the service is poor. Lack of maintainance as well. The place is amazing and the staff are nice. I hope they'll fix everything so their costumers can stay conveniently.
