Really enjoyed my stay at Coco Garden. The owner Ray, his associates George and Gerri Lynn made my experience in El Nido memorable. Treated me and every other guest like family. Ray will do what he can to assist in your travels. The property itself is close to Vanilla Beach and some eateries. It’s more chill than the standard hostel. Rent a scooter and you’ll be good. Wi-fi in all of El Nido is spotty, so you have to patient, but Ray will help you if you’re in a pinch. Will be looking forward to seeing Ray and company soon!!!

we arrived later in the evening coming from the bus from puerto princessa, and were welcomed warmly into a karaoke night the owners and some of the guests were having! we were shown to our villa, which is a bamboo hut with a entrance room comfortable for sitting that has a table, a bed section with a comfortable clean bed and mosquito net as it is not fully sealed to the outside, and a bathroom with a sink shower and well working flush toilet. the shower is cold water only but i think you’ll find this common in the philippines. there is no AC, but there is a fan with kept us nice and cool. this is not a fancy schmancy hotel, but it is clean, cozy, unique, homey, and the service is out of this world! free breakfast every morning, the owners and staff will help you out with whatever you need. because it is a bit far out of town-they can help you rent a scooter (totally worth it it makes everything on the island accessible) or call you a tricycle! for the price, i believe there’s no better place to stay in el nido. we love and miss our lil villa already and would totally stay again!

Your Travel Guide to El Nido as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to El Nido from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most common and convenient way to reach El Nido from Manila is by air. Several airlines operate flights to Lio Airport (ENI) in El Nido. Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly, but budget-conscious travelers can often find round-trip tickets for PHP 4,000 to PHP 8,000 if booked in advance, especially during the off-peak season. Booking flight tickets early is highly recommended.

Alternatively, you can fly into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), which often has more flight options and potentially lower fares from Manila and other major cities like Cebu. From Puerto Princesa, you can take a van or bus to El Nido. This journey takes approximately 5 to 6 hours and typically costs between PHP 500 to PHP 800 per person. This option is more time-consuming but can be a more economical choice for some travelers.

For those who enjoy road trips, driving from Manila to El Nido is possible, though it's a very long journey, spanning over 24 hours of driving time, often requiring an overnight stop. The route involves taking the Pan-Philippine Highway. This option is generally only recommended for those who want to explore other parts of Palawan along the way and have ample time. For most travelers, flying into either Lio or Puerto Princesa is the preferred method.

Best Time to Visit El Nido

The dry season, from November to May, is generally considered the best time to visit El Nido. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and minimal rainfall, which are ideal conditions for island hopping, swimming, snorkeling, and other water activities. The peak tourist season falls between December and April, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodations and tours during this period.

The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rain and occasional typhoons. While you might find fewer crowds and lower prices during this time, weather disruptions can sometimes affect tour schedules and outdoor activities. However, even during the wet season, there are often periods of good weather, and the landscapes are lush and green. Travelers who are flexible and don't mind occasional rain showers might find this period more affordable.

Food and Dining Near El Nido — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Filipino cuisine is diverse and delicious, and El Nido offers plenty of opportunities to savor local flavors. When in El Nido, be sure to try fresh seafood, which is abundant in this coastal town. Grilled fish, squid, and prawns are often prepared simply to highlight their natural taste, usually served with rice and a side of soy sauce and calamansi. Many beachfront restaurants offer a selection of the day's catch.

Another must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish, typically tuna or tanigue, is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and tangy dish, perfect for the tropical climate. You can find excellent Kinilaw in local eateries and restaurants throughout El Nido, often prepared with a unique local twist.

For a heartier meal, consider trying Adobo, a classic Filipino dish. While variations exist across the country, El Nido restaurants often serve chicken or pork adobo, braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. It’s a savory and comforting dish that represents Filipino home cooking. Many local carinderias and restaurants will have this staple on their menu.

Don't leave El Nido without trying La Paz Batchoy, a rich noodle soup originating from Iloilo. This hearty soup typically contains pork, shrimp, and various internal organs, flavored with garlic and onions. It’s a warming and satisfying meal, especially after a long day of exploring. You can find this dish in local eateries that specialize in noodle soups.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for El Nido

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals in El Nido, a polite greeting like "Magandang araw" (Good day) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. It's also customary to dress modestly when visiting local communities or churches, though beachwear is perfectly acceptable at resorts and beaches. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Safety in El Nido is generally good, but like any tourist destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For any emergencies, the local police can be reached at [insert local emergency number if available, otherwise omit]. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your accommodation readily accessible.

For a smoother travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is useful for getting around, though offline maps can be a lifesaver in areas with spotty internet. A translation app can help bridge language gaps if needed, though English is widely spoken in tourist areas. For booking local tours and transport, Traveloka is your go-to platform, offering convenience and competitive prices.

Another helpful app could be a currency converter if you plan to visit other parts of the Philippines or need to track exchange rates. For communication, apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are widely used by locals and travelers alike. Having these tools at your fingertips can enhance your trip and ensure you're well-prepared for your El Nido adventure.

Mosquitos were terrible and we ended up leaving before we completed check in. Parking on highway only due to extremely steep drive not possible to navigate without 4 wheel drive. Must walk through slum to get to the poorly maintained property surrounded by roosters that crow constantly.

This property was a disaster. You first walk past as if you are going through everyone’s back yard. Then open a gate to the property which looks like it’s abandoned huts, it’s dirty, landscaping is like overgrown grass and plants. You will be sleeping in premade huts. There is a toilet out in the open, once we saw that we walked out of the property! It felt unsafe and unclean. You are 20-30 minutes from El nido!

we arrived later in the evening coming from the bus from puerto princessa, and were welcomed warmly into a karaoke night the owners and some of the guests were having! we were shown to our villa, which is a bamboo hut with a entrance room comfortable for sitting that has a table, a bed section with a comfortable clean bed and mosquito net as it is not fully sealed to the outside, and a bathroom with a sink shower and well working flush toilet. the shower is cold water only but i think you’ll find this common in the philippines. there is no AC, but there is a fan with kept us nice and cool. this is not a fancy schmancy hotel, but it is clean, cozy, unique, homey, and the service is out of this world! free breakfast every morning, the owners and staff will help you out with whatever you need. because it is a bit far out of town-they can help you rent a scooter (totally worth it it makes everything on the island accessible) or call you a tricycle! for the price, i believe there’s no better place to stay in el nido. we love and miss our lil villa already and would totally stay again!

Arrived in El Nido upon my check in date. The island had some bad rain and flash flood (according to the owner). NO ONE CALLED ME TO LET ME KNOW THAT WE COULDN'T CHECK IN DUE TO THE CONDITION OF THIS PLACE. I HAVE STAYED HERE TWICE IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS AND REALLY ADMIRED THE PLACE AND THE STAFF. NO ONE INFORMED ME NOR TEXT ME NOR EMAILED ME TO LET ME KNOW THAT THE PLACE WAS RAMSACKED DUE TO THE RAIN. I ARRIVED AT COCO GARDEN, THERE WAS NO ONE THERE, THE PLACE LOOKED ABANDONED AND EMPTY. AFTER YELLING OUT FOR SOMEONE, FINALLY THE OWNER CAME OUT AND TOLD ME THAT HIS PLACE WAS HIT BY THE FLASH FLOOD AND THE RAIN. THERE IS NO WATER AND THE PLACE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. I RENTED 3 COTTAGES AND NOT ONE WAS AVAILABLE. RAY TOOK THE LIBERTY TO DRIVE AROUND WITH US TO HELP US FIND ANOTHER PLACE, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, A LOT OF PLACES WERE SOLD OUT AND COULD NOT ACCOMMODATE US FOR 3 ROOMS. AFTER LOOKING FOR 2 AND A HALF HOURS, WE FINALLY FOUND A PLACE WITH ONLY 2 ROOMS AVAILABLE - EL NIDO BEACH RESORT, WHICH WAS PRICEY. WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO CHECK IN AT EL NIDO BEACH RESORT. THE OWNER TOLD ME TO NOT CANCEL WITH EXPEDIA AND JUST LET IT GO AS IF WE CHECKED IN. AND THAT HE WILL JUST REFUND ME THE MONEY. I GUESS HE IS WAITING FOR EXPEDIA TO PAY HIM, BUT THIS IS NOT MY CONCERN. THE OWNER SHOULD REFUND ME ALL THE MONEY REGARDLESS. BOTTOM LINE, IT IS UNPROFESSIONAL THAT NO ONE, I REPEAT, NO ONE FROM COCO GARDEN INFORMED ME THAT THE PLACE WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR CHECK IN.

Lots of positives about this stay, George and Eileen were fantastic. As the place was outside of town, George offered lifts to and from places no trouble at all. Fantastic! They helped us with booking a tour, checked up on us when we were ill (Thai restaurant in town, stay away!), booked the bus for us. Very helpful! The cabin was very cute! Large bed, nice bathroom and each come with a table and seating area which was very handy! Breakfast was toast, eggs, coffee and Melen. Nice! Only downside is the location, it’s not where is says on the map, it’s about another 3km away, but with George giving us a lift it was not an issue! The beach she took us too was completely beautiful too which was only 5 mins down the road and very few people on it! WiFi wasn’t working but it’s only a new place and a few places down the road did so wasn’t too much of an issue. Lovely stay! Amazing staff!

Coco was good overall. Its a simple, cute little place to experience real village life in the Philippines. Nice clean cottage with huge bed, own clean bathroom (shower and toilet). Location is not the best. You are living among the locals, with rooster doing thier job in the morning. Away from all the hustle and bustle and if you need a ride to town there is a free shuttle service. Staff are very friendly and accomodating. Place itself is good and clean.

Will be looking forward to seeing Ray and company soon!!!

we stayed there for 3 nights + Beautiful nippa huts + a lot of space + nice garden + breakfast included + the owner (Ray) is very friendly and tries to help as much as possible to make your stay pleasant. - very far away from the City centre (you Need to rent a Scooter!) - very loud at times (you can hear every word the neighbour in the hut next to you is saying; a lot of roosters around

we arrived later in the evening coming from the bus from puerto princessa, and were welcomed warmly into a karaoke night the owners and some of the guests were having! we were shown to our villa, which is a bamboo hut with a entrance room comfortable for sitting that has a table, a bed section with a comfortable clean bed and mosquito net as it is not fully sealed to the outside, and a bathroom with a sink shower and well working flush toilet. the shower is cold water only but i think you’ll find this common in the philippines. there is no AC, but there is a fan with kept us nice and cool. this is not a fancy schmancy hotel, but it is clean, cozy, unique, homey, and the service is out of this world! free breakfast every morning, the owners and staff will help you out with whatever you need. because it is a bit far out of town-they can help you rent a scooter (totally worth it it makes everything on the island accessible) or call you a tricycle! for the price, i believe there’s no better place to stay in el nido. we love and miss our lil villa already and would totally stay again!
